Volume I, 2011 Volume I, 2011 1 Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department Firefighters from Fire and Rescue Station 18, Jefferson, Fire and Rescue Station 8, Annandale, and Fire and Rescue Station 23, West Annandale, conduct an ice training exercise at Fairview Lake, January 26, 2011. Several media outlets reported on the training. (Photo by Angela K. Ballard, Fire and Rescue Academy) Line Copy 2 Volume I, 2011 From The Fire Chief . . . Ronald L. Mastin “Thank you for all that you do to serve our great county. Do it proudly.” A s we come to the close of winter and begin looking forward to the great many things that spring offers, I want us all to take a few moments to reflect on and renew our commitment to health and safety. We can all recall an incident during the past year when we said, “Luck was on our side, and fortunately, no one was injured.” We know the dangers of our profession, but I don’t want our health and safety to depend on being lucky. Every person, from the newest recruit to the Fire Chief, has to take responsibility to ensure we don’t depend on luck as a safety program. This all starts by each individual pledging to commit themselves to being the very best they can be at all facets of their job. Also, making a commitment to learn something new every day and sharing that with your shift mates. And, finally, striving to be the best at knowing your equipment, SOPs, operations manuals, and response district so there is no second guessing about what needs to be done in a stressful situation. For incident commanders, this means doing a complete and thorough size-up and initiating an incident action plan that is communicated effectively and executed according to our policies and procedures; personnel accountability is in place, the R.I.T. has been established, and resources Ronald L. Mastin, Fire Chief Dan Schmidt, Editor Cathy Richards, Layout and Design © COPYRIGHT 2010 Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department 4100 Chain Bridge Road Fairfax, Virginia 22030 703-246-3801 are allocated to influence a positive outcome. The situation is constantly re-evaluated, tactics are modified to meet any changes that occur, and crew unity is maintained at all times. The company officer must ensure his/her personnel train and prepare for the worst case scenario. This starts with strong leadership and always setting a good example, whether in the station, at the incident scene, or off-duty. Is it reasonable to expect your “team” to maintain their fitness, train daily, and execute effectively if you are not setting an example? The company officer sets the tone for everyone else and if it is not done each and every day as part of your commitment to support a healthy and safe workforce, we put ourselves in the position of depending on “luck.” I encourage, and quite frankly expect, all of our officers to be the leader when it comes to physical fitness, company training, and safe fireground operations. If not you, then who? I know that we can all point to obstacles that keep us from doing these basic things. It’s the budget, taking units to the shop, details, transfers, etc. The fact is, incidents will still occur and once a tragic event takes place, the excuses are just that, “excuses.” We do face challenging times, not only with the budget, but with LINE COPY is the newsletter of the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department and is published by the department’s Public Affairs and Life Safety Education staff. Questions regarding deadlines or publication schedule should be addressed to Cathy Richards at 703-246-3801. All submissions should be sent to Public Affairs and Life Safety Education, marked “Attn: Editor, LINE COPY.” Volume I, 2011 3 Members of the 130th Recruit School Class provided a fire safety presentation on February 15, 2011, to the children at Halley Elementary School in the Lorton area. Davidson, Fire and Rescue Academy) building construction, threats of terrorism, active shooter events, and many more. We can’t sit back and blame anyone else. We must prepare both mentally and physically every day to ensure everyone goes home. After all, that is what we preach and train on as a fire service. Can we all look in the mirror and say, “I am doing my part each and every day to ensure that I am not jeopardizing my life or that of my fellow firefighter?” We owe it to each other as a team of professionals that takes on the most dangerous, but also provides for a most rewarding and noble profession of serving others during their greatest time of need. Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Luck runs out, but daily dedication, persistence, and commitment will win the day. Thank you for all that you do to serve our great county. Do it proudly. v This Issue . . . Being an Apparatus Technician. Plans for the future: Spend time with my wife, sons, family, and friends. Working for Communication Caches. Words of wisdom: Learn the area you work in by knowing the streets, buildings, and types of construction. This may just save your life some day. Take ownership of the equipment you use daily by taking care of it. Work as a team and look out for each other. What got you interested in the fire service? As a kid I lived close to a Fire Station where I started to hang out at age 14. I learned early on that I liked helping people. Who or what had an influence in your career? There are so many good people in this department that have retired. These are just a few of my many mentors: Gerry Jaskulski, Jr. DiCola, Danny Bickham, Hugh Wood, Carl Pumphrey, Mike Nelson, Glenn Gaines, Ed Stinnette, Doug Turner, Richard Slepetz, Gary Clouser, Ashby Thompson, Dave McKernan, Chris Raabe, Dave Ashley, and of course, Marty Bundrick. Will miss about the Fire Department: All the great people I got to know, which became great friends and I consider part of my family. Plans for the future: Relax and maybe move to a warmer climate, where I don’t have to shovel snow. Words of wisdom: Take care of each other on each and every call and go home safe. What got you interested in the fire service? My dad, who passed away when I was 15. He was a volunteer for years. Who or what made an influence in your career? Ashby Thompson, my first Captain.
