Fairfax County Demographics Fairfax County is an urban county that ranks among the top two percent of counties nationwide in terms of population size and density. The county, with a 2010 population of 1,081,726 persons, has more residents than eight states – Alaska, Delaware, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont and Wyoming. Since 2000, Fairfax County’s population increased by 112,000 persons or 11.5 percent. The growth by supervisor district over the past ten years was uneven. The Braddock Supervisor District population grew the most slowly, increasing by only 5.4 percent or 5,717 persons, while the Hunter Mill Supervisor District experienced the most rapid growth, increasing 15.6 percent or 17,056 persons. Currently, the Mason Supervisor District, which also experienced slow growth (6.0 percent), has the lowest population, 109,326 persons. The Mount Vernon Supervisor District which grew 13.6 percent has the largest population (127,501 persons). If all nine supervisor districts were equal in population size, each would have 120,192 residents. Fairfax County also is racially and ethnically diverse. Over 45 percent of the county’s total population is a racial or ethnic minority. Over the past decade, all of the net population growth in Fairfax County was from racial and ethnic minorities. Unlike many jurisdictions, Fairfax County does not have a predominate 6 Attachment 2 minority group and the county’s minorities are widely dispersed geographically. Based on data from the Census Bureau’s American Community Surveys, Fairfax County’s Asian and Hispanic residents represent many different cultures. Ancestry from a single country does not form a predominate majority in either group. Countywide, 17.5 percent of the population is Asian, 15.6 percent is Hispanic and 9.2 percent is Black/African American. Among the county’s 232 voting precincts, only two precincts contain an Asian population that comprises more than 45 percent of the precinct’s total population and only four precincts contain a Hispanic population that exceeds 45 percent of the precinct’s population. No precinct in Fairfax County contains a Black/African American population that comprises more than 45 percent of the precinct’s total population.
