Employee of the Month George Orduno — Facilities Maintenance
January 2014, Volume 324 USU Facilities, Logan, Utah Employee of the Month George Orduno — Facilities Maintenance USU Facilities is pleased to announce George Orduno as the Employee of the Month for January 2014. George has worked at Facilities for three years with Facilities Maintenance and is currently the Team Lead in charge of the window crew. George came to USU after retiring from Albertson’s. For 27 years he worked in the shipping & receiving area of the Albertson’s frozen foods warehouse. Rob Reeder, Director of FM & LOAM, said, “George is always willing to do what it takes to please his customers. He continues to receive many compliments from customers and coworkers with regard to the quality of his work. George is a natural leader as he brings out the best in his fellow crew members.” Sheila Lukenbill, FM Manager, said, “It has been a great pleasure managing the window crew this past year. I walked into a new territory when I acquired this crew after Nick Anderson’s passing last January. I have appreciated George’s willingness in directing the window crew and trying out new ideas. The crew has consisted of three employees working part-time, all the way to a group of seven employees. George has been instrumental in coordinating the workload and directing the crew. With the additional employees, we have cleaned all the exterior campus windows and half of the inside windows, along with cleaning the blinds. Thanks George; we appreciate all you do!” George was born in Los Banos, a city in Merced County, CA. He was raised in Garden Grove, which is located in northern Orange County, CA. George graduated from Pacifica High School in Garden Grove. He and his wife, Darlene, were living in Garden Grove, CA when they decided to move to Logan (Darlene’s hometown) in 2007. They have three grown son’s; twins, Steve and Joe, both work for NUCOR in Plymouth, UT; Bob, lives in Hemet, George Orduno CA and is in charge of the Avian Raptor Protection Division of San Diego Gas & Electric. George & Darlene also have six grandsons! George is happy to say that his life revolves around his family; especially his grandchildren. If he does happen to have spare time, you will find him fishing in either our local rivers or at Bear Lake. One special tradition in George’s family is spending Christmas Eve together as a family and making tamales. George, congratulations on this well deserved recognition. USU Facilities is grateful to have you as part of the Organization! At that time I called Luke Bair and he agreed that he and Matt should come in and put MAG on the roads. I then called USU police to have them contact LOAM to come in at 4:00 am in order to get started on the slick and icy sidewalks. With this advanced notice from Matt we were about to get a head start on the cleanup. Even with Matt being a new employee, this kind of heads up attitude helped out very much. Step Up Award: As part of the HPER Cluster, Tyler Hansen and Todd Durfee work from 10:00pm – 6:30am. These two men have been playing the role of team lead for the past two months, helping to guide the hourly employees during that time frame. Tyler and Todd have been doing a tremendous job, continually going above and beyond their work description and without ever a complaint. Because the work they do is in the middle of the night, they are easily overlooked for all they contribute to Facilities. Congratulations to both of you for this well-deserved recognition! The previous record was 355 days. Do your part to help extend the record! Lost-Time Hours (Goal: Less Than 200) 2012 2013 296 Hours 96 Hours Dear Facilities, I am writing to express appreciation and commendation for the great work that Jeff Stout has done as custodian in the Engineering Lab building. I have worked in this building for almost 23 years and I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a custodian as conscientious as he has been. Not only are the basic jobs done, but I have seen him cleaning other parts of the building that others might have simply overlooked. Jeff is always pleasant and helpful and it is clear that he takes pride in his work. His work habits and leadership have made him an example to his co-workers. Regretfully, I have learned that he will be moving to another building, but I know that he will be a great asset there! OSHA Recordable Injuries 2012 Sincerely, Todd K. Moon Engineering Department 2013 Large Snow Storm December 19, 2013: With today’s snow, I called six people to come in and help us. They were off because they had worked Saturday and Sunday last weekend. Out of those six employees, two answered the call and came in to help. I Be Careful Out There! would like to thank them for doing this. Even though school is out for the Christmas break, there are still a lot of people Our resident squirrel has been storing nuts for the working on campus. A big thank you to Bret Leckie & David winter. We think he finally realized that keeping his Burgess! 20 13 stash in the engine compartments of our Facilities vehicles was a fruitless venture. So, Joe Beck gathered the pine cones and left the box in the parking lot. The squirrel has emptied the box and is now storing his treasures on the roof of the Facilities building; safe for winter! Scott Hampton, LOAM Foreman Lowe’s — Keep America Beautiful Grant Project: Earlier this year LOAM received a grant from Lowe’s through their Keep America Beautiful Program to make improvements to the Child Development Lab playground. We were able to install a raised planter to give the children a place to plant vegetables and annual flowers. We also created a teepee structure to grow vines, such as beans, to give the children a fort-like structure to play in. We planted perennials and shrubs on the south side of the playground and on the hill along 4th North to provide a wildlife habitat for birds, butterflies, and other creatures, and to stabilize the steep slope alongside the highway. Thanks to Mike McBride, the LOAM shop and the volunteers from Lowe’s for their assistance on this project. Also thanks to Lowe’s and Keep America Beautiful for providing us the grant funding.
