USU Facilities, Logan, Utah
Employee of the Month
Katie Hoggan — Business Services
USU Facilities is pleased to
announce Katie Hoggan as the
Employee of the Month for February
2014.
Katie has worked at
Facilities as a part-time employee
since 1997 within the Business
Services office. Even though she was
gone for a few years in between while
having her children, she decided to
return and continues to be a dedicated
employee.
Judith
Clark,
Business
Services Manager, has said, “ Katie’s
position includes many assignments
that need to be fulfilled on a daily and
monthly basis. However, over the
past few months she has been asked to
spread her talents through the offices
of Administration and Customer
Service. This has caused her a lot of
extra work in order to complete new
assignments, along with her daily
work load.
She has graciously
accepted all these assignments with a
positive and professional attitude.
Linda Hudson, Customer
Service Supervisor has said, “Because
we can never leave the Customer
Service area unattended, Katie will
continually fill in anytime and
never makes us feel like we are a
burden. She is willing to learn so
many different things. If she does
happen to make a mistake, she will
be quick to let you know. I don’t
know what we’d do without Katie!”
Joe Beck, PAR Team
(Positive Appreciation & Recognition) Chairperson has said, “Katie
has been on the Team for a little
over three years. She brings heart
and soul to our meetings and
events.
Even as a part-time
employee, she makes time in her
busy schedule to be an active
member of the Team.”
Katie was born in Logan
and raised in Hyrum. The youngest
of ten children, she loves being the
baby of the family, having seven
sisters and two brothers.
Katie and her husband,
Rob, have been married for almost
eighteen years and have two
daughters: Amy is fourteen and
Jenna is twelve. As a family they
love to camp and travel. This
summer they have a trip planned to
Katie Hoggan
the east coast: Washington, DC, New York
and Boston.
One of Katie’s passions is
collecting fabric and sewing, making mainly
clothing and tote bags. She and her family
are also avid Aggie fans. Each year they
have season tickets to Aggie Football and
Basketball games.
Of all the many things that Katie
loves about life, she is quick to point out that
her favorite thing is being with family.
Whether it’s her husband and children or her
large family with siblings, nieces, and
nephews, that’s where she finds her joy.
Katie, congratulations on this well
deserved recognition!

When the night custodial crew arrived at the HYPR building on Monday, January 6th to clean for the
evening, they noticed that the windows were dripping wet with precipitation. They later noticed a
stream of water coming out of the vents. After searching the basement area, they found a “river” of water flowing into the mechanical room. Todd Durfee and Tyler Hansen immediately called the police
and got the appropriate crews onsite to shut off the water. Todd then went to the Facilities building to
get the Flood King to begin cleaning up the water. He then made contact with Mark Hunting and the
carpet crew of Ben Elwood and Armando Estrada. They started right away to clean up the water
that was flowing into the mechanical room. Todd and the carpet crew spent the rest of the night pumping out a foot of standing water from the basement. In the morning Adam Hunting, Chad Brooks,
Kalilou Fofana and Ricardo Sandoval spent the remainder of the day removing the rest of the water. This task was made all the more difficult due to the fact that they were working in a three foot
crawl space that was cold, dark and wet. With the combined efforts of these FM crews, this flood was
taken care of. Great work everyone!
Step Up Award: Delena Williams is one of our new full-time
employees who works within the Engineering building. We recently
had an incident where a person in a lab accidentally put some parts
to a project in a garbage can and they were mistakenly thrown
out. Understandably, the person was frantic as these were very
important to the project he was doing. Delena had been working in
the building that day and the call came in after her shift had ended.
She was contacted and willingly came back to work, sorting through
the dumpster and finding the trash bag that contained the
parts. The parts were then returned to a very relieved person. Many
thanks to Delena for going above and beyond!

Thank you all very much for your love,
thoughtfulness and the compassion you have
shown me at the passing of my sister. The
flowers remind me of her, so beautiful and
lovely. My heart has been lifted by your
sentiments. Again, thank you.

I would like to say thank you to Gilbert
Young. He comes to work each day at 5:00am,
and after seeing how icy the sidewalks and
parking lots were on January 30, he went to
USU Police and had them call LOAM and
Heavy Equipment in so that they had a head
start before students and faculty arrived. It was
still slick, but this helped so much before everyone on campus showed up. Thanks Gilbert!

Groundhog Day is celebrated in the U.S. each year on February 2nd. The groundhog awakens from a long winter’s nap and goes outside of his den to see if he sees his shadow. According to legend, if the groundhog sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. He returns to his den and goes back to sleep, If, however, he does not see his shadow, Spring is just around the corner! German immigrants brought the tradi on with them from Germany. The tradi on is based upon Candlemas; the day that is the midpoint between Winter and Spring. Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania is the site of the annual Groundhog event. For the record, Phil the groundhog sees his shadow about 9 out of 10 mes. Madeline Williams 24
