Value of Volunteer Labor: $562.80 Greening the Berm The Neighborhood Clean-Up Day was a wonderful success, with 30 residents volunteering time to enhance the berm, which is an extremely valuable resource on our property where the trees were to be planted. Our volunteers performed various clean-up tasks including pruning, removing vines and leaves, weeding, and putting down chips from our community brush pile as mulch. We cleared space for 8 new Leyland Cyprus trees to be planted. The trees will be watered with volunteer hours from community volunteers; the Association will provide the hoses and the water. Planting trees is important for the environment. Trees increase oxygen and decrease carbon dixoxide, provide a habitat for wildlife, block traffic from our perimeter and the resulting noise and pollution, provide shade for the walking trail, enhance the community garden area, and add a natural beauty to our community. 18 NEIGHBORHOOD ENHANCEMENT PARNTERSHIP PROGRAM ille v s e n Dra trict Dis McLean Winterfest Project Details Location Awarded Funds Awarded Date Completed Leveraged Funds 1300 Chain Bridge Rd., McLean $2,000.00 March 2010 December 2010 $47,289.22 2,750 Volunteer Hours contributed in completion of this project. Value of Volunteer Labor: $607.50 McLean Winterfest McLean Winterfest is a day of free, fun events for McLean families to welcome in the holidays. In addition to the community parade, the day includes the Reindog Pageant in the early afternoon. This event, sponsored by the Greater McLean Chamber of Commerce, is already a welcome tradition in McLean for pet owners whose dogs come festooned in holiday regalia. There are prizes and fun for the entire family, including four-legged members. Participants in the Reindog Pageant are invited to march in the community parade. Immediately following the parade, the local Chamber hosts the McLean tree lighting ceremony on Holiday Island. New parade promotion yard signs have been purchased and we now have 3 banners that will be placed in the Mclean business district and on 123 on the way to Washington DC. All will be utilized again next year and in subsequent years. We have 44 confirmed entries, about 15 more than last year, and are pleased to have about twice as much in financial support donations from local businesses as last year. We again had donated popcorn machines and a large heated food tent, with hot cocoa and cookies donated by local grocery stores. This year saw a larger crowd than the previous two years in spite of the cold and windy weather. We believe the bench and receptacle will provide comfort convenience to the general public. The park bech and trash receptacle should also enhance the appearance of this Metro bus stop located on Chain Bridge Road. The WHOA Gazebo, at the Metro Bus Stop on Chain Bridge Road, previously without seating for persons waiting for a bus, now has a quality 6 foot long bench installed, also a quality trash receptacle. 20 NEIGHBORHOOD ENHANCEMENT PARNTERSHIP PROGRAM
