Science Scene Research Report —The Dean’s Corner—
Science Scene Research Report May 2008 to September 2008 A Publication of the College of Science, Utah State University —The Dean’s Corner— I would like to extend my congratulations to the faculty and students whose research successes fill the pages of this issue of Science Scene. In particular it is great to see the high numbers of student presentations at conferences around the country and the world. The faculty who have mentored these students deserve Kudos as well. As we work to increase research activity within the college we will surely see more and more interdisciplinary research that crosses departmental and college boundaries. I certainly encourage faculty to explore opportunities with collaborators across campus and beyond. One of the great assets of the USU community is the Space Dynamics Lab. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Douglas Lemon back to Cache Valley as the new SDL director. Dr. Lemon is a PhD graduate from our Physics Department. Several successful USTAR projects involve College of Science faculty, including a new one in biomanufacturing. The new internal grant program is now fully implemented so congratulations to those who have already found these grants fruitful. These awards are intended to help you open new avenues of external funding so best of luck with the research that results from this opportunity. I hope you have all had the opportunity to view the new College of Science website. One of the great features is the calendar section, which should provide you with current schedules of events, seminars, etc. across the college. Have a great fall semester. — College of Science Contract & Grant Activity — Amounts (# of proposals) July 2008 August 2008 Cumulative Totals for FY08-09 Proposals Submitted $190,460.00 (3) $3,268,907.34 (16) $3,459,367.34 (19) Awards Received $128,206.00 (4) $2,126,524.34 (18) $2,254,730.34 (22) COLLEGE OF SCIENCE UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY 0305 OLD MAIN HILL, LOGAN UTAH 84322-0305 — New College of Science Webpage— Let’s Get on the Same (Web) Page At the start of this semester the College of Science launched a new Web site (www.usu.edu/science). Sporting an updated design and new photos, the site is intended to serve as a gathering place for information and ideas. The home page of the new site features a calendar and recent news about the college. One of the goals of the new site is to provide a central location where everyone can conveniently access news and information about what‟s happening in the college. All are encouraged to participate by submitting events to the college calendar so that everyone has an opportunity to enjoy the many seminars, lectures and activities offered throughout our college. Posting a calendar event is easy. From the home page, select “Calendar” from the blue, far left column menu. On the calendar page, click on the “Add an Event” button at the bottom of the second column. A three-step entry form will guide you in entering information about your event. In addition to your calendar submissions, we welcome news story ideas and your suggestions for improving the Web site. Please contact Mary-Ann Muffoletto, CoS public relations specialist, at [email protected] or 797-3517 with your comments. 2 — SDL Welcomes Physics Alum As New Director — The Utah State University Research Foundation announced that Dr. Douglas Lemon has been selected as the Space Dynamics Laboratory‟s new director, replacing Mike Pavich who is retiring after 5 years of dedicated service. Lemon holds a bachelor‟s degree and Ph.D. in physics from USU and was awarded the university‟s coveted Robins Award in 1974. Lemon‟s career spans nearly 30 years in various roles at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Washington state. Since 2007, he has acted as PNNL‟s Director of Laboratory Strategy responsible for creating an institutional strategy, identifying emerging trends and opportunities, and overseeing the laboratory‟s R&D initiatives. — Undergraduate Research Opportunities — Undergraduate Research and Creative Opportunities (URCO) grants support research or creative projects that are not routine requirements for a course or degree program (though course credit may sometimes be awarded), and the funds can be used to pay for equipment, supplies, technical support or travel to do research. The deadline for turning in applications is 12:00 pm on February 15, 2009. For more info, visit http://research.usu.edu/undergrad/htm/funding-opportunities/urco. The Research on Capitol Hill event will be held January 29, 2009 at the State Capitol. The deadline for turning in abstracts and photographs for this event is November 1, 2008. More information about these and other events can be found on the Undergraduate Research site at http://research.usu.edu/undergrad/ or contact Dr. Joyce Kinkead at [email protected] or 797-1706. — Laboratory Safety Training — Environmental Health and Safety will be holding Laboratory Safety Initial Training sessions this fall. The session will be held on the following dates: November 12, 2008 December 15, 2008 All sessions will be held from 12:00 pm to 4:30 pm in ECOB 127. Those wishing to participate can register online at http://www.ehs.usu.edu/trainings. — Responsible Conduct of Research Training — Training in the responsible conduct of research is now a requirement for students participating in NSF-funded projects. The USU School of Graduate Studies and Office of Compliance Assistance (OCA) sponsor the Graduate Scholars Program to enable students to receive the Graduate Scholars Certificate, which meets the NSF requirement. This program involves participation in a Graduate Scholars Orientation (during fall Graduate Orientation), online training through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI), and attendance at two additional forums held during the academic year. To enroll in the training, or for questions concerning the NSF training requirements, please contact Russ Price, our Federal Compliance Manager, at [email protected]. 3 —Faculty Committees — UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF SCIENCE (AY 2008-09) Faculty Senate [9 elected representatives, serve for 3-yr terms] Vince Wickwar (09) - Senate Exec (09) Eric Rowley (09) Chris Corcoran (10) Jim Haefner (10) Mark Riffe (10) Dave Wallace (11) Sue Morgan (11) Nick Flann (11) Tom Chang (11) Honors Advisory Board * Educational Policies Committee (EPC) * Budget and Faculty Welfare Committee Greg Podgorski (09; replacement) * Academic Freedom and Tenure Committee David Peak (11) * Faculty Evaluation Committee Greg Podgorski (11) Richard Mueller (09; replacement) Ted Evans (10; replacement) Academic Standards Subcommittee of EPC Graduate Council Kathryn Turner Richard Cutler (10) General Education Subcommittee of EPC Council on Teacher Education Richard Mueller Richard Mueller Jim Cangelosi Curriculum Subcommittee of EPC Distance Education & Electronic Delivery Committee Richard Mueller Currently inactive * Professional Responsibilities and Procedures Committee Scott Cannon (10) * Faculty Diversity, Development and Equity Committee Note: * = one representative elected by COS; serves for a three-year term Alvan Hengge (10) NEW FACULTY FALL 2008 Renee Bryce Assistant Professor Computer Science Daniel Bryce Assistant Professor Computer Science Nghiem Nguyen Assistant Professor Mathematics & Statistics 4 Shane Larson Assistant Professor Physics Christopher Peterson*, Uyen Lam*, and Joseph K.-K.
