Parks and Recreation Caucus
Trail specialists Amy Swainston, left, who works for the
Michigan DNR Roscommon District, and Patty Werwiebe
with the Hiawatha National Forest speak to a packed Crows
Nest on February 5 during a parks and recreation caucus, the
first of its kind offered by Lake Superior State University.
Regional recreation professionals heard what LSSU alumni
are doing with their parks and recreation management degrees during roundtable-style presentations. State and federal
representatives also discussed the latest in land-use initiatives. Amy, a 2005 LSSU parks and recreation graduate and
Patty briefed caucus-goers about public and private efforts to
make more than 12,000 miles of recreational trails throughout Michigan even more accessible to the public. The conference, organized by LSSU's Parks and Recreation professor,
Dr. Sally Childs, had partial support from an LSSU marketing micro-grant program. Invitations to the event went out to
area public schools as well.

Exercise Science
Curricular Changes Coming
Exercise Science is revamping curriculum to include two tracks of study, Health and Fitness and Sports Medicine.
The Sports Medicine track prepares students for graduate school in disciplines such as Athletic Training, Physical and Occupational
Therapy, Chiropractic, Physician Assistant, and Medicine. Additional academic emphasis in bench science in disciplines such as
biology, chemistry, physiology, and psychology prepare the student for the challenges of graduate education. For those students who
are seeking the highest level of performance, opportunities are available for direct entrance programs into various accredited graduate programs throughout the state.
The track in Health and Fitness is a perfect fit for students seeking to start their career right after their Bachelors degree. Employment can be found in locations around the country, in high growth fields such as fitness training and management, clinical health and
exercise science, human performance, and health and wellness promotions. This highly regarded degree, focuses on “hands-on”
learning, with strategic alliances with the nation’s leading health and fitness providers.
