a passeggiare e così scoprire i diversi lineamenti della città, monumenti dell'ingegno
umano e monumenti naturali. Ecco quindi le Promenade lungo il fiume Passirio, sulle
quali affaccia il liberty del Kurhaus; il sentiero di Sissi che conduce, sulle orme dell'Imperatrice Elisabetta, ai famosi Giardini di Castel Trauttmansdorff lambendo ville e castelli; i quattro chilometri di passeggiata Tappeiner, pittoresco balcone a mezzacosta
sulla valle dell'Adige; i “Waalweg”, percorsi che affiancano gli antichi canali irrigui nei
dintorni, tra prati, frutteti e boschi.
Camminando ci si imbatte in eleganti residenze, chiese, manieri: dal Duomo di San
Nicolò al Castello Principesco, in centro, testimoni muti di storia e di un fermento cultura ancora oggi esuberante che si manifesta negli eventi ospitati al Kurhaus, negli appuntamenti del Teatro Puccini, nei tanti musei che raccontano ora le tendenze dell'arte moderna (Merano Arte), ora il mondo femminile nei secoli (Museo delle Donne),
ora gli sviluppi del turismo altoatesino (Touriseum). Storia, arte e cultura caratterizzano inoltre il Palais Mamming Museum, la cui inaugurazione è prevista nel 2015, nuovo
polo d'attrazione. Mentre da tempo ampiamente affermate sono le Terme Merano,
oasi di relax e benessere, fra piscine e un variegato reparto saune, i trattamenti dello
“Spa & Vital Center” e il centro fitness per i i più atletici. Chi ama, anche in vacanza, fare
attività s'affida inoltre alle strutture della Meranarena - pattinaggio, tennis, il nuovo
lido -, chi invece vuole dedicarsi allo shopping ha a disposizione i Portici e i suoi paraggi, un autentico centro commerciale naturale, ma anche i mercati settimanali e quelli
contadini. Il 2015 porta in dote anche una nuova rassegna, il “Mercato Meranese”, che
ogni sabato da fine marzo a fine ottobre consentirà l'acquisto di prodotti della gastronomia e dell'artigianato locale.

territorio, abbinando sapori e contesti agresti ad altri più eleganti, internazionali, ricercati: gli appuntamenti di “Foodie Factory-L'officina del gusto di Merano e dintorni”

the Sissi Trail that follows the footsteps of the Empress Elisabeth to the famous Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle past villas and castles; the four kilometres of the
Tappeinerweg Trail, a picturesque balcony overlooking the valley of the River Adige;
and the “Waalwege”, paths that follow the ancient irrigation channels through the
meadows, orchards and woodlands of the surrounding area.
As we walk we come across elegant residences, churches and country houses: from
the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas to the Princes’ Castle in the centre, silent witnesses to history and a still vibrant culture that is manifested in the events hosted at the
Kurhaus, the Puccini Theatre and the many museums that display trends in modern
art (Merano Arte), the world of women through the centuries (the Women’s Museum) or the development of tourism in South Tyrol (the Touriseum). History, art and
culture also characterise the Palais Mamming Museum, a new attraction planned to
open in 2015. Long established by contrast are the Merano Thermal Baths, an oasis of
relaxation and wellbeing, with its numerous pools and a sauna area, treatments in the
“Spa & Vital Centre” and a fitness centre for the more athletically inclined. Sports enthusiasts will also be able to indulge their passion while on holiday at the Meranarena,
with skating, tennis, and the new lido, while those who prefer shopping can savour
the Portici (arcades) and their environs, a genuine centre of commerce, as well as the
weekly markets, including farmers’ markets. The year 2015 will also bring a new event,
the “Merano Market”, to be held every Saturday from late March to late October, offering the chance to purchase food products and local handicrafts.
And, talking of gastronomic matters, the region’s mixed Alpine and Mediterranean
identity is reflected in the combinations of traditional flavours and contexts with others of a more elegant, international and refined nature: the “Foodie Factory”, a culinary workshop for Merano and its surroundings, represents a wonderful opportunity
to appreciate these close up.

Primavera a Merano
Spring in Merano
Il risveglio della natura e le giornate soleggiate convincono presto i bar e i caffè ad
allestire i tavolini all'aperto: è arrivata la primavera, la città prende vita e si respira
la voglia di passare del tempo all'aria aperta. Con aprile riaprono i Giardini di Castel
Trauttmansdorff, premiati nel 2013 con il prestigioso “International Garden of the
Year”: ottanta ambienti botanici rappresentativi delle diverse regioni del mondo, una
biodiversità straordinaria e una moltitudine di attrazioni fra i quali i “padiglioni artistici” e il “giardino proibito” dalle bizzarre sculture.
As nature awakens and the days become longer and sunnier, bars and cafes start setting up their tables outdoors: now spring has arrived, the town comes alive and with
it the desire to spend time in the fresh air. April sees the reopening of the Gardens
of Trauttmansdorff Castle, awarded the prestigious title of “International Garden of
the Year” in 2013, with eighty botanical environments representing various regions of
the world, an extraordinary biodiversity and a multitude of attractions including the
“artistic pavilions” and the “forbidden garden” with its bizarre sculptures.

In recent years this season has witnessed several initiatives offering different opportunities. Between April and June the town and its surrounding areas play host
to “Merano Vitae”, a series of excursions, tastings and workshops aimed at those
seeking wellness and vitality, all forming part of the wider panorama of the “Merano
Spring”, which is aimed at celebrating the landscape and green spaces. In late March
too begins the “Merano Market”, which is always held on Saturdays and offers local
crafts and gastronomic products.
Easter Monday is the time of the traditional Haflinger horse races that open the
season at the Merano Racecourse, where thoroughbreds will be competing in May
(see also Summer chapter). Then comes the “Half-Marathon Merano-Lagundo”,
where a throng of runners will take part in a weekend sports festival. May sees the
return of “Merano in Yoga”, a fascinating and spirited gathering dedicated to holistic
disciplines, a meeting that brings together internationally renowned yoga experts
and an increasing number of practitioners and enthusiasts, which has its culinary
counterpart in the “Vegetarian Weeks”.
Negli ultimi anni, in questa stagione sono sorte numerose iniziative capaci di offrire
opportunità diverse. Tra aprile e giugno la città e le località dei dintorni sono scenario di “Merano Vitae”, rassegna di escursioni, degustazioni e workshop rivolti a
chi cerca vitalità e benessere. Rientrano nel più ampio panorama della “Primavera
Meranese”, volta a celebrare il paesaggio e le aree verdi. A fine marzo viene inoltre
inaugurato il “Mercato Meranese”, sempre di sabato, palcoscenico dei prodotti artigianali e gastronomici tipici.
Il Lunedì di Pasqua è invece il momento delle corse rusticane dei cavalli avelignesi,
occasione d'apertura della stagione dell'ippodromo, dove i purosangue cominciano
a confrontarsi a maggio (vedi anche il paragrafo Estate). Segue la “Half Marathon
Merano-Lagundo” partecipata da un esercito di corridori in un fine settimana di festa dello sport. Poi, a maggio, il ritorno di “Merano in Yoga”, ammaliante e brioso
momento d'incontro dedicato alle discipline olistiche, meeting che raduna personalità di spessore internazionale dello yoga e un numero crescente di praticanti e appassionati. Risvolto culinario della manifestazione sono le “Vegetarian Weeks”.

Lunghe giornate di sole e temperature gradevoli, ancor più lungo il fiume, da godersi
indugiando sulle terrazze che degradano verso il corso d'acqua. Oppure da rinfrescare al parco delle Terme, piscine incastonate in una rigogliosa vegetazione, o al nuovo
lido. La sera, poi, fra piazze e vicoli fanno capolino musica e allegria.
Estate a Merano può voler dire relax ma anche attività. In un batter d'occhio s'approdare alle alte quote di Merano 2000 (vedi anche il paragrafo Inverno), che in questa
stagione diventando uno sfaccettato paradiso escursionistico alpino con vie ben segnate e adatte tanto alle famiglie quanto ai “montanari” più esperti. I paesaggi sono

enjoyed while lingering on the terraces that run down towards the water, or at the
Merano Thermal Baths, with their swimming pools surrounded by lush vegetation,
or at the new lido. In the evening there is music and merriment to be found in the

Summer in Merano can mean both relaxing and being active. A modern cable car
whisks you to Merano 2000 (see also Winter chapter), which in summer becomes a
vast Alpine paradise with well-marked paths suitable both for families and for experienced mountain-climbers, with landscapes that shimmer in their beauty. Looking

down to the valley floor, you can see an ocean of greenery nestling in the midst of the
city: this is the Merano Racecourse, where the racing season comes to life. Regarded
as one the finest race tracks in Europe, it offers restaurants, a playground and of course
the incredible thrill of thoroughbred racing. Merano is particularly famous for its steeplechase events, the most spectacular of all the horse-racing disciplines.

considerato fra i più belli d'Europa, offre ristorazione, un parco giochi e naturalmente
l'incredibile emozione dei purosangue al galoppo. In particolare, Merano è celebre
per le corse a ostacoli, la specialità ippica più spettacolare.
È anche il periodo migliore per scoprire il territorio in bicicletta: placidamente, pedalando lungo la rete di piste ciclabili si raggiungono ameni paesini e contesti naturali
da cartolina. I giochi di colore delle fioriture dipingono nel frattempo la tela dei Giardini di Castel Trauttmansdorff dove, fra giugno e agosto, vanno in scena le “Serate ai
Giardini”, rassegna di world music che ospita cantanti e musicisti di spessore internazionale - negli anni passati, fra gli altri, Yann Tiersen, Mario Biondi, Emiliana Torrini
e Andreas Vollenweider.
Il centro città è animato da iniziative in serie. Un'incredibile carica di genuinità e divertimento irrompe in giugno con “Asfaltart”, il festival degli artisti di strada. Fra luglio e
agosto meranesi e ospiti si mischiano sotto le stelle, nei bar e presso i palcoscenici, nei
vivaci “Martedìsera” ispirati a temi sempre differenti e nei concerti di “Merano una
sera d'estate”. La musica d'autore trova invece il suo teatro in “MeranoJazz”, a metà luglio, che in parallelo manda in onda i laboratori della “Mitteleuropean Jazz Academy”.

It is also the best time to explore the area by bicycle, gently pedalling along the network of cycle paths through charming villages and picture-postcard landscapes.
Meanwhile a riot of colours can be seen at the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle which between June and August stage the “Garden Nights”, a sequence of world
music events featuring internationally renowned singers and musicians. Past editions
included performances by such stellar artists as Yann Tiersen, Mario Biondi, Emiliana
Torrini and Andreas Vollenweider.
The town centre is marked by a vibrant series of initiatives. In June comes “Asfaltart”,
a festival of street artists and an incredible blend of authenticity and fun. Between July
and August locals and visitors mingle beneath the stars, in the bars and by the stages
of the lively “Tuesday evening in Merano” event series, inspired by ever-changing
themes and the concerts of “A summer evening in Merano”. Highly original music can
then be found at “MeranoJazz” in mid-July, which in parallel hosts the workshops of
the “Central European Jazz Academy”.
Autunno a Merano

La chioma degli alberi si colora di tinte pastello e le montagne si candeggiano del
bianco della prima neve. Ciò malgrado, in città le temperature sono ancora piacevoli.
L'autunno meranese è la stagione del “Törggelen”, l'usanza tipica che unisce il sapore delle caldarroste e del vino nuovo - ma anche delle specialità più tipiche della
cucina sudtirolese - a gite fuori porta. La raccolta delle mele e la vendemmia sono
lo sfondo della Festa dell'Uva, il terzo fine settimana di ottobre, momento più di
ogni altro radicato nella tradizione. Tre giorni di musica popolare, balli e brindisi, che
quest'anno si uniscono alla 17ª edizione della Raduno della bande musicali dell'Alto Adige e ai suoi 4.000 componenti.
The leaves on the trees turn to pastel shades and the mountains are dusted with
the white of the first snow, yet in the town temperatures remain balmy. Autumn in
Merano is the season of “Törggelen”, the local custom that combines the tastes of
roast chestnuts and new wine, as well as typical specialities from the cuisine of South
Tyrol, all at outdoor events. The apple and grape harvests are the background to the
Merano Grape Festival, held on the third weekend in October, and more deeply
rooted in tradition than any other occasion. Three days of folk music, dancing and carousing this year coincide with the 17th Festival of South Tyrolean marching bands
with their 4,000 members.

Gli appassionati della “classica” si ritrovano alle Settimane Musicali Meranesi, da
tempo nel novero dei festival più rinomati del continente, grazie a concerti di prestigiose orchestre e celebri solisti ospitati principalmente al Kursaal, già da fine agosto
sino al tramonto di settembre. Nel frattempo l'ippodromo (vedi anche il paragrafo Estate) vive il suo momento clou con il Palio del Burgraviato, sfida fra Comuni
del territorio abbinati a cavalli avelignesi e purosangue, ma soprattutto con il Gran
Premio Merano Forst. L'ultima domenica di settembre, i binocoli dell'ippica mitteleuropea sono puntati su Merano e su questa corsa, la principale e più ricca in ostacoli
d'Italia, cimento che solca la storia dal 1935 in una cornice di festa e mondanità.
Si respira aria glamour, la stessa che caratterizza nello stesso periodo Merano Fashion,
passerella del meglio delle boutique meranesi, e che si respira pure al Merano
WineFestival, nella prima metà di novembre, un viaggio incredibile alla scoperta del
meglio della vitivinicoltura italiana e mondiale, ma anche della gastronomia e delle
tendenze in cucina. Un momento incorniciato da una galassia di iniziative che affrontano il tema del gusto in modo esclusivo, gioioso e rigoroso ad un tempo, e da diversi
punti di vista, con degustazioni e cene ma anche incontri e dibattiti.
Fans of classical music can enjoy themselves at the Merano Music Weeks, long
one of Europe’s most popular festivals, with concerts by prestigious orchestras and
famous soloists held primarily at the Kursaal from the end of August until the end of
September. Meanwhile, highlights at the Merano Racecourse (see also Summer chapter) include the Burggräfler Palio, a challenge between local municipalities competing on Haflinger mounts and thoroughbreds, and especially the Merano Forst
Grand Prix when, on the last Sunday of September, the eyes of the Central European
horseracing world are on this race in Merano, the biggest and richest steeplechase
in Italy, a contest that has been held since 1935 against a festive and sophisticated
backdrop.
This palpable glamour can at the same time be found at Merano Fashion, with the best
from Merano’s boutiques appearing on the catwalk, while the Merano WineFestival,
held in the first half of November, offers a wonderful journey of discovery through
the highlights of Italian and international wine production, as well as of gastronomy
and cooking trends. It is all framed by a galaxy of initiatives that address the theme
of taste in an exclusive, joyful yet meticulous manner, celebrating different points of
view while hosting tastings and meals, not to mention meetings and debates.

Mercatini di Natale, il momento più suggestivo di una stagione che nei diversi mesi
offre possibilità per tutta la sua famiglia, grazie ai cinque comprensori sciistici e i
percorsi escursionistici, ma anche grazie alle Terme Merano e al suo bouquet di
opportunità di relax e svago.
The white mountain scenery is the incomparable backdrop to winter in Merano. The
magic of snow also reaches the valley floor, dusting the Christmas markets, the highlight of a season whose months offer something for all the family thanks to the nearby five ski areas and winter walks, and also thanks to the Merano Thermal Baths
and the wide range of opportunities for leisure and relaxation.
I Mercatini di Merano, gli unici a essere affacciati su un fiume, si distinguono dai
tanti altri per la loro capacità di fondere la tradizione con elementi di modernità:

Merano’s Christmas Market, the only one held along a riverbank, is distinguished
by its ability to blend the traditional and modern, with its charming atmosphere and
multitude of things to do and discover at the food and crafts stands, followed by an
experience of the entire town, with special tours, workshops for children and concerts.
New Year’s Eve in Merano is an occasion to gather and see in the New Year, with fine
dining available in restaurants and a giant party under the stars.

di tende attrezzate. È il Salewa Basecamp Merano, dedicato agli amanti della montagna e a tutti coloro che cercano un'avventura mozzafiato. Le tende sono allestite nel
comprensorio di Merano 2000 (vedi anche paragrafo Estate), la “terrazza soleggiata
della città” dove si può scegliere fra quaranta chilometri di piste di diversa difficoltà,
tracciati per freerider e snowboarder, vari sentieri escursionistici, la discesa per le
slitte, il “Luckis Kinderland per i bambini”, l'Alpin Bob - il bob su rotaia più lungo
d'Italia: una serie di offerte che consente a ciascuno di trovare la montagna che cerca.
Between late December and early January, a unique experience is available at an altitude of 2,300 metres above sea level: the chance to spend a night surrounded by
unspoilt nature in a fully-equipped tent. This is the Salewa Basecamp Merano, dedicated to mountain lovers and all those in search of a breathtaking adventure. The
tents are set up in the Merano 2000 ski area (see also Summer chapter), the “sun
terrace of the town”, where you can choose between 40 kilometres of runs of varying
difficulty, areas for freeriders and snowboarders, numerous hiking trails, a sledding
run, “Luckis Kinderland” for children and the Alpin Bob - Italy’s longest bob sled on
rails: a whole range of offers to ensure that everyone finds the mountain experience
they are looking for.

Grazie al profondo rinnovo del Kurhaus, negli anni Ottanta del Novecento, la città si
è dotata di una location straordinaria per eleganza e autorevolezza, e di attrezzature
che - soprattutto il Kursaal, la sala maggiore - permettono un'eccellente acustica. Il
Kurhaus, considerato uno dei palazzi polifunzionali più eleganti e rinomati dell'intero
arco alpino, è membro dell'Historic Conference Centres of Europe. Nel 2015, fra gli
altri, qui si ritrovano i partecipanti alla fiera Wedding Day, i membri dell'Unione
farmacisti tedeschi (per la 53ª volta a Merano!), i delegati di Anusca-35° convegno
dell'Associazione Nazionale Ufficiali di Stato Civile e d'Anagrafe, e si tengono diverse
manifestazioni locali, seminari, congressi aziendali e naturalmente eventi e concerti

Merano vanta una lunga tradizione come sede di congressi. Era il 1886 quando, ancora in epoca asburgica, a qui si riunirono medici provenienti da tutto il mondo. Lungo
questo solco seguì una serie di grandi assemblee che portarono in città ospiti preminenti e copioso pubblico. Con il passaggio di secolo si verificò un'accelerazione
dell'attività congressuale nei campi più disparati fornendo così il decisivo slancio a
questa attitudine, conservata e accresciuta fino ai giorni nostri.

Merano boasts a long tradition as a congress venue. Back in 1886, still in the time of
the Habsburgs, physicians from around the world assembled there, to be followed by
a long series of major gatherings that brought famous guests and a large public to
the town. The number of congresses increased over the century, covering a very wide
range of subject areas, and providing a decisive impetus with growth continuing until
the present day.
The thorough renovation of the Kurhaus in the 1980s endowed the town with a
unique location of elegance and authority that was blessed - especially in the great
room of the Kursaal - with excellent acoustics. The Kurhaus, regarded as one of the
most elegant multi-functional buildings in the entire Alpine area, is a member of the
Historic Conference Centres of Europe. Among others appearing in 2015 will be the
Wedding Day fair, the German Union of Pharmacists (for the 53rd time in Merano),
delegates of Anusca, the national conference of the Italian Association of Registrars,
as well as several local events, seminars, corporate conventions and of course international events and concerts.
The Tourist Authority supports organisers as a partner in the planning, organisation
and realisation of meetings in Merano.

MOSTRA “GUERRA E TURISMO”
Per i territori meridionali del Tirolo storico lo scoppio della Prima
Guerra Mondiale e il suo prosieguo hanno significato una censura
radicale. Con l’entrata in guerra dell’Italia nel 1915 il territorio a sud
del Brennero si trasformò da qualificata regione di villeggiatura e
“balcone meridionale della Monarchia” in un teatro di combattimenti: filo spinato e accampamenti militari erano disseminati nei luoghi
che un tempo erano stati mete di vacanza e di scalate, dall’Ortles
fino alle Dolomiti di Sesto. Il turismo subì un arresto: hotel, alberghi
e rifugi si svuotarono improvvisamente. Alberghi e pensioni vennero assegnati come acquartieramenti per ufficiali, e talvolta anche
per i soldati. Gli hotel di maggiori dimensioni furono riconvertiti
in ospedali militari per tutta la durata della guerra. Per gli albergatori e i ristoratori proprietari di una struttura sulla linea di tiro,
da un giorno all’altro crollò tutto quanto avevano faticosamente
costruito nell’arco di decenni. Dopo la Prima Guerra Mondiale le
ferrovie di guerra delle Dolomiti divennero la struttura portante
di un turismo in rapida e sorprendente rinascita. Proprio dove in
passato si combatterono battaglie particolarmente aspre, il turismo riconquistò a sé le località di vacanza con un effetto tanto più
travolgente. Questa mostra illustra le numerose connessioni tra
il turismo prima del 1914 e quanto sviluppatosi nel periodo successivo al 1918. Come seppero convivere guerra e turismo? Quali
conseguenze di lungo periodo ha avuto la Prima Guerra Mondiale
nei territori di rilevanza turistica come le Dolomiti e quali di esse
persistono ancora oggi?
“WAR AND TOURISM” - SPECIAL EXHIBITION AT THE
TOURISEUM (TRAUTTMANSDORFF CASTLE)
In 1915 Tyrol, previously the “southern balcony of the Habsburg
Empire”, was transformed from a recreational area into a theatre
of war: from the Ortler to the Dolomites, what had been favoured
destinations among tourists and mountaineers suddenly sprouted
barbed wire and military barracks. Hotels, restaurants and mountain
huts rapidly emptied. Behind the front lines, spa resorts and tourist
destinations were converted into military hospitals. For hoteliers
and innkeepers with establishments in the line of fire, the work of
decades was ruined overnight. Yet, after the First World War, the
conflict zones of the Dolomites became the backbone of a surprisingly rapid revival in tourism. The special exhibition at the Touriseum focuses on the influence of the First World War on the development of tourism in South Tyrol. How did war and tourism interact?

EROINE SILENZIOSE: IL FRONTE FEMMINILE DURANTE LA
PRIMA GUERRA MONDIALE
Mostra in occasione del centenario della Prima Guerra Mondiale
per indagare la situazione femminile in quel periodo, capire in
quali settori e aspetti della vita le donne fossero attive e in che
modo venissero sfruttate come forza lavoro. Le tematiche: Merano prima della scoppio della Prima Guerra Mondiale - euforia
di guerra; professioni e campi di occupazione femminile; vita
quotidiana - attività delle donne nell’economia domestica ed in
agricoltura; guerra: amore e prostituzione.
INVISIBLE HEROINES
THE WOMEN’S FRONT IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR
The Women’s Museum highlights the situation of women in
Merano and its surroundings during the First World War. The
exhibition addresses various topics such as Merano before and
after the outbreak of the First World War, the jobs and various
aspects of work performed by women during the war years, the
tasks of women in everyday life and the role of peace activists.
On display are original objects, large-format photos from the
Merano city archives, newspaper reports and documents from
the war years in the Merano region. There will also be a wideranging supporting programme.

ANNI BONIFICATI - L’ETÀ PER I TEMPI MODERNI
L’aspettativa di vita delle donne aumenta sempre di più, dato che
la loro maggioranza - essendosi innalzata la durata media della
vita a livello mondiale -, trascorre la prolungata durata di vita
ancora relativamente in buona salute e svolgendo in modo solo
parzialmente limitato le proprie attività. Viene mostrata la varietà di stile, con la quale questa “nuova” età delle donne può essere rappresentata! Attraverso immagini, brevi racconti e filmati
sono presentate donne di diverse generazioni, da diversi Paesi e
con stili di vita molto diversi. Ogni donna ha avuto il coraggio di
confidare il significato che attribuisce a questa fase della propria
vita. L’incapacità di prendere atto dell’inevitabile mutamento
delle donne con l’età è elegantemente disapprovata dall’esposizione, non con forza e con zelo, ma piuttosto in modo indiretto e
diversificato, attraverso oggetti scherzosi e storie sorprendenti.

In occasione del progetto “From & To Merano-Nizza” cinque artisti
italiani e cinque artisti francesi sono stati invitati a realizzare una
mostra insieme. L’esposizione inaugurata a novembre 2014 a Villa
Arson, Nizza, e sarà ospitata a Merano Arte a partire da febbraio
2015. A cura di: Eric Mangion (direttore di Villa Arson, Nizza) e da
Valerio Dehò (direttore artistico di Merano Arte).
FROM & TO MERAN-NIZZA
The “From & To Meran-Nizza” project grew from the work between emerging Italian artists and talented art creators from
France, resulting in new works that are now documented in a
journal. The exhibition in Merano is curated by Eric Mangion
(Director of the “Villa Arson” centre in Nice) and Valerio Dehò
(Merano Arte).

FOODIE FACTORY: EAT & ART
Arte & Cucina - il cibo nell’arte contemporanea
In occasione della mostra “Eat & Art”, nell’ambito dell’iniziativa “officina del gusto” di Merano e dintorni, Merano Arte ospita la Foodie
Factory, in collaborazione con l’Azienda di Soggiorno di Merano. Un
laboratorio in cui si sperimenta con prodotti selvatici e spontanei,
sempre freschi, locali e di stagione, in cui vengono preparati cibi
creativi, innovativi e sani, reinterpretando anche le antiche ricette.
Con la Foodie Factory gli spazi espositivi di Merano Arte rendono
protagonisti il valore culturale del cucinare e del mangiare, il tutto
dal punto di vista dell’arte. Partendo dall’opera di Daniel Spoerri,
inventore della “Eat Art”, saranno proposte in mostra 10-15 posizioni di artisti contemporanei che interpretano il tema del cibo, della
cucina e del gusto. L’esposizione esplora come l’approccio artistico
che coinvolge l’ambito alimentare si esprima in tematiche fortemente attuali quali la ricchezza e la fame, i disturbi alimentari e le
manie salutiste, la dietologia moderna e il fast food.

About food in art
In the context of the “Foodie Factory”, Merano’s culinary laboratory, Merano Arte is focusing on the cultural significance of
cooking, eating and pleasure from an artistic perspective. Some
10-15 works will be shown, starting with Daniel Spoerri as the inventor of “Eat Art” (art with and from foodstuffs). The exhibition
shows how the way in which art deals with the theme of “food”
has been given a new topicality against a backdrop of abundance
and hunger and in the face of modern nutritional doctrines and
fast food.

Opere dalla collezione Verbund di Vienna
Uno dei principali focus della collezione Verbund riguarda quella generazione di artiste che hanno segnato la storia dell’arte negli anni
Settanta. La mostra a Merano Arte è dedicata all’opera dell’artista
americana Francesca Woodman (1958-1981) e a quella dell’austriaca
Birgit Jürgenssen (1949-2003). Le 80 fotografie della Woodman
vengono esposte per la prima volta in versione originale.

WORKS FROM THE “SAMMLUNG VERBUND”
One of the main areas of collection of the Viennese “VERBUND”
organisation is the generation of artists who made art history
in the 1970s. The exhibition is dedicated to the highly varied
legacy of the American Francesca Woodman (1958-1981) and
the works of the Austrian Birgit Jürgenssen (1949-2003). The 80
photographs of Woodman in the possession of the “SAMMLUNG
VERBUND” can be seen for the first time at Merano Arte in their
original size.

ROLLING BACK THE YEARS - AGE IN THE MODERN ERA
More and more women are getting older, because increased life
expectancy worldwide means that most women are now achieving longer lifespans in relatively good health and with - usually scarcely restricted mobility. The exhibition illustrates the variety of
ways in which women cope with aging. Older women from various
age groups, different countries and very different life situations
are presented via images, short histories and films. Each woman
has had the courage to decide what meaning she will give to this
phase of her life. There will also be a varied programme in support
of the exhibition.
