Oral Fluid Collection
For OraQuick Advance Rapid HIV 1 / 2 Antibody Test
I.
Purpose:
To obtain an adequate oral fluid specimen for rapid HIV testing using the
OraQuick Advance Rapid HIV 1 / 2 Antibody test.
II.
Materials
A. Test Device (from OraQuick Advance Rapid HIV 1 / 2 Antibody Test
Kit)
B. Test Device Pouch (or disposable zippered plastic bag)
C. Optional: Disposable latex gloves (or non-latex if employee and/or client
has a latex allergy). Testing personnel with breaks in the skin (cuts,
abrasions, or dermatitis) should wear gloves when performing oral fluid
testing.
III. Procedure
A. Open the OraQuick  Advance pouch. Have the client remove the Test
Device paddle. Do not allow the client to touch the Flat Pad. Check the
pouch to make sure that an Absorbent Packet was included with the
device. If no Absorbent Packet is present, discard that Test Device
paddle and open a new one.
B. Instruct the client to
a. Place the Flat Pad above the teeth against the outer gum.
b. Gently swab completely around the outer gums, both upper and
lower, one time around, using the flat pad.
c. Both sides of the Flat Pad may be used during this procedure.
C. Do not allow the client to swab the roof of the mouth, the inside of the
cheek, or the tongue.
D. The Test Device paddle is now ready to be inserted into the test vial. If
the Test Device paddle must be carried to the test area, place it inside
either the Pouch or a plastic zip lock bag for safe transporting. (Discard
the Absorbent Packet from the Pouch before using it to carry a client
specimen to the test area.)
IV. Limitations
Activity such as eating, drinking, or smoking tobacco more than 5 minutes prior to
testing does not appear to have any effect on the results.
