In the Spotlight
Incident notification emails for traffic events in the MDOT Grand Region are sent to
public works departments, law enforcement agencies, media and individuals subscribed
to the Grand Region Listserv. In March, 52 incident notification emails were sent, nearly
double the previous 12-month average. Nearly one-third of these e-mails involved ramp closures and
freeway closures. This increase in notifications was likely due, in part, to a recent increase in West
Michigan Transportation Operations Center (WMTOC) devices installed on state trunklines in the Grand
Region. Refer to the link provided on the bottom of page four of this report to subscribe to the Listserv.
One traffic incident "hot spot" during March was US-131 in the vicinity of Wealthy Street. Of the nine total
crashes documented by WMTOC operators, seven occurred during the morning and afternoon peak
periods on northbound US-131, south of the Wealthy Street interchange near the railroad bridge.
Thanks to unseasonably warm temperatures in March, the weather did not appear to have a significant
impact on travel conditions. In fact, according to the National Weather Service this past March was the
warmest on record. WMTOC operators noted only seven days of wet or icy pavement conditions in the
area. Total rainfall was 33 percent higher than normal (mostly from heavy rain at the end of the month)
while total snowfall was 66 percent lower than normal.
