Formal Opening Lecture October 8, 2009 “Persuading Juries Through Graphic Design” by Karl Gude 4:00 p.m. MSU Law 4th Floor Atrium Comments at 4:30 p.m. November 12, 2009 7:00 p.m. Castle Board Room, MSU Law The Presentation of Evidence as Art is a unique exhibition of media images and legal graphics. Most of these graphics were used in legal proceedings to help explain complex issues to lay people—they help construct a specific legal narrative to and for the jury and other interested parties. In addition, some of the graphics that are on display were created by professional media organizations, such as The New York Times, to explain complex legal issues to their readers. To assemble this collection, over 75 design and legal firms from across the nation were asked to submit evidence presentations and graphics for consideration. The review committee has selected the best submissions for the Presentation of Evidence as Art. The exhibition was assembled by Karl Gude, the former director of Information Graphics at Newsweek magazine and now a lecturer at Michigan State University’s School of Journalism in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences. Sponsored by Michigan State University College of Law—The Geoffrey Fieger Trial Practice Institute; MSU College of Law Clinical Programs; Research, Writing & Advocacy Programs; and James Madison College For additional information go to www.msu.edu/user/mercuro/Evidence.htm or contact: Nicholas Mercuro Michigan State University College of Law [email protected]
