EAC Welcomes Classes of
1996

M
embers of the Classes of 1996 and 1997
returned to Thatcher for Homecoming
weekend, October 26-27, 2007. They had
the opportunity to see what was new with an ice cream
social on Friday evening at Discovery Park Campus’
Circle D Ranch. They also toured campus on Saturday
to see the new Middle Campus added since they
attended as students.
Class members had an enjoyable brunch and
program where they shared stories and updates about
what they have done since leaving Eastern. The reunion
committee also showed a class video and gave awards
for those reaching milestones like who had the most
children, the most gray hair, least amount of hair, and
most miles traveled to attend the reunion.
Next came a pre-game meal sponsored by the
Gila Hanks Athletic Booster Club. Afterwards, alumni
watched the Gila Monsters soundly defeat the Pima
College Aztecs, 45-13.
The Alumni Association wishes to thank Stacie
(Flake) Allred, Erika (Evans) Cluff, Becca (Terry)
Jackson, Clint Peck, Cresha (Simons) Peck, Adam
Tolman, Bekki (Isbell) Tolman, and Amy (Van Cott)
Palmer for their help in making a great reunion for
the Classes of 1996 and 1997. Thanks for a wonderful
weekend of memories and fun!
Members of the EAC Classes of 1996 and 1997 enjoyed a weekend reunion last October.

Verne Lee, ’47, Granite Bay, Arizona, recalls his
experience attending Gila Junior College. Fresh
from high school, he remembers being intimidated
somewhat by the many GIs who were also in school
after World War II. He recalls that one of the GIs
married a teacher that year.
Verne went on to serve a mission for the LDS
church in the Northwestern States Mission. He
returned home and was drafted into the army. He
spent a year in Korea as an artillery officer until
the ceasefire. Mr. Lee then completed degrees at
Brigham Young University and New York University.
He worked for JC Penney for many years and then
started several convalescent care hospitals. In
1985, he sold the hospitals and retired.
Verne returned to campus
in May 2003 for the Emeritus
Reunion.
is currently a Real Estate and Private Portfolio
Investor. She says that her three children and eight
grandchildren are the greatest accomplishments
she has achieved. She is happy, healthy, and loves
to travel, learn, and teach.
Gloria Herrera Samano, ’86, Flagstaff, Arizona,
grew up in Duncan, Arizona. After talking with her
high school counselor, she decided to go to EAC.
Her two sisters, Lilly Herrera Clark, ’86, and
Julie Herrera, ’86, also decided to attend with
her. Though their mother passed away just before
starting school, they were able to rent a small home
from their uncle while attending Eastern. The three
sisters were able to support each other and all
graduated together. After
graduation, they all moved
to Flagstaff where Gloria
worked for a paper mill and
got married. She is now
busy raising four children.
Lilly has worked as a dental
assistant, got married, and
is raising her son. Julie
is working for Northern
Arizona University and

Eric C. Bellmann, ’59,
Tucson, Arizona, graduated
from EAC and went to Arizona
State College (now NAU). He
graduated there with a BS in
marketing in 1961. In 1960,
he married his wife, Nora, in
Flagstaff. They have two sons
who both live in Tucson. Craig
is in real estate sales and Jim owns a landscape
maintenance business. Eric and his wife have
lived in Tucson since 1971. He works for Tucson
Business Interiors, dba Facilitec, and has sold
office furniture to Freeport-McMoRan in Safford
and Morenci for the last four years. From 1978 to
2001, he owned his own business selling business
forms and computer supplies. His wife has been
a teacher for Tucson Unified School District since
1972. Though he “retired” in 2001, he has kept busy
working for Bashas’ and AJ’s Fine Foods, and now
Facilitec. Eric says, “I am looking forward to my
50 year reunion in 2009 and celebrating our 50th
wedding anniversary in 2010.” For any of my former
classmates, my email address is: ebellmann23@

Fighting Gila Monsters
The
Win First Bowl Game

T

and
significance
of the football game
on December 5 in
Chihuahua, Mexico,
were evident from the
moment the Eastern
Arizona College team
burst on to the field
at Estadio Olimpico
holding the American
flag high with pride.
The Chihuahua Bowl
was about more than
just a game. The
game, however, went

in the fourth quarter for the final score of the
game.
Reid was awarded the Most Valuable
Player trophy following the game after
rushing for 130 yards and two scores. “When
they said MVP Tony Reid, it kind of caught
me off guard,” Reid said. “I love it. It’s great.
I’m holding the trophy right now, and it feels
nice.” He credited the strong blocking of the
offensive line and the backs and receivers
downfield for allowing him to put up the
gaudy stats.
“The hosts were great, and they treated
us nice,” he said. “The overall experience was
excellent.” “Our goal was to get to (and win)
a bowl game, and now we’ve reached that,
and we can chase our goal of being a national
champion,” EAC head coach John O’Mera
said. “You have to give the Mexican team
credit — they came out in the second half and
got after us pretty good.” When asked what
he noticed the most about the Mexican team,
he said “their heart.” “They didn’t quit,” he
said. “They were going to play until the last
second.”
O’Mera couldn’t have been happier about
the entire trip to Chihuahua. “It has exceeded
the expectations,” he said. O’Mera talked
about how great it was to play at the beautiful
new stadium in Chihuahua, and he also said
how nice it was for the locals to have treated
the team so well during the trip. It was the
first-ever bowl invite and victory for EAC,
and the Monsters reached 10 wins for the first
time in school history.
EAC’s cheerleaders participated in the
United Spirit Association’s National
Collegiate Competition in Las Vegas,
Nevada on Feb. 10-11. The team placed
first in the All-Girl College Show Cheer
event. “Last year we did not even reach the
final round,” explained Michaela Younger,
EAC’s Cheer Coach. “So this was a major
accomplishment for the team.”

Last year the EAC Foundation provided
