New High Tech Center Enables
Enhanced Instruction
S
tudents and faculty are anxious to see
completion of Eastern’s High Technology
Center. The center will allow expansion of
courses in computer information systems,
networking and office technology.
The new High Tech Center will offer the
latest in technology across its five classrooms
with wireless network and multi-media
capabilities. A new student commons will
also allow students access to computers to
complete assignments, check email or do
research on the web. Instructors will have
state-of-the-art multi-media capability to
enhance their presentations to students. A
cyber-patio is also planned that will provide
students with wireless network connections
in a relaxed atmosphere.
The construction project entails
remodeling the old administration building
Architectural rendering of the completed High Tech Center, which will house computer lab/
classroom space, faculty offices and the College’s Computer Services Department.
and an addition that will create a 27,000
square foot technology center. The Computer
Services Department that currently supports
the entire College will also have offices in the
building.
Construction completion is expected late
this Fall with classroom instruction beginning
in January 2006.

Later that evening, the
classmates joined the graduates

commencement activities held afterwards. A
lot has changed on the campus of EAC, but
memories and friendships started 50 years

Dr. Michael D. Dersam, ’90 – Scottsdale,
Arizona, has been a doctor for Arizona
Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in Phoenix
for three years. In March of 2005, he was
granted the job as the Arizona Cardinal’s
team doctor.
Michael, born in Morenci, grew up
playing football in Safford. Then, while
attending EAC, he played on the Gila
Monster’s football team.
In addition to playing football while
attending EAC, Michael also enrolled in
science and math classes that prepared him
to continue his education at the University of
Arizona. He credits both Clarence McBride
and Wayne Johnson for being instrumental in
helping him to succeed. Michael said, “EAC
provided a one-on-one that you could never
get at a university.”
Also while attending EAC, Michael was
the recipient of many awards, scholarships
and honors: The John Mickelson Memorial,
Newman Club, Alvin Goodman Scholastic
Award, and the Outstanding Biology Student
Award. He ultimately graduated with honors
in 1990.
His parents played an active role in
preparing Michael to become a doctor. His
father, Dan Dersam, ’77, is currently the
golf coach at EAC and has participated as
a high school and Eastern Arizona College
football coach. While dad coached, Michael
would often help his fellow teammates with
their ankle and wrist injuries. His mother,
Annabelle Gutierrez Dersam, ’69, provided
the educational encouragement Michael
needed to succeed.
Michael and his wife, Cheri, currently
have two daughters and are expecting a son
in June.
Victor Mata, ’87 – San Luis, Arizona,
worked and studied at EAC for over twenty
years after which he went on to work for Gila
County. He is working in the Department of
Homeland Security in San Luis. He credits

College. He set a fine example of how a
person is to lead and treat others. His impact
on Harvey’s life will never go away. Dr.
McGrath had a plan for the basketball team
and Harvey did his best to execute that plan.
It must have worked since they were 23-2
for the regular season and won the Western
Regionals and went on to the Nationals. They
were ranked 5th in the nation and ended up
12th at the National Tournament, with a final
record of 26-4.
Harvey shared a little about those days
with Coach McGrath. “With 14 minutes left
in the game against Dodge City, we were 14
points behind, EAJC’s top three scorers and
rebounders were fouled out, one did not make
the trip. Twelve minutes and thirty seconds
later, we had the ball and were down by one.
I was the 5th scorer on this team, but was
forced to ‘step up to the plate’ and had 12
points in 12 minutes. Dodge City went on to
win the Nationals. The next day during the
game against Burlington, Iowa, I had eight
ribs separated and had to be taken to the
doctor. When I returned to the gym all taped
up, I sat at the end of the bench, as I would
not be playing anymore. The guy next to me
said, ‘the coach wants to talk to you.’ So I
went down the bench and Wayne motioned to
sit next to him, but he didn’t say anything to
me. I sat there for several minutes, knowing
I couldn’t play and this spot was for the 6th
man, who would go into the game next. I
finally leaned over and said, ‘Coach, what did
you want to tell me?’ Coach McGrath said,
‘I want you to just sit here next to me, it is
a place of honor, because you got us here!’
I was stunned—I was just a little guy on a
powerful team.” Harvey says words cannot
express what Dr. McGrath means to him.
Lavona Connolly Areghini, ’58 – Mesa,
Arizona, went on to graduate at Brigham
Young University in 1960. She taught school
for thirty-two years in Utah and Arizona.
While teaching in Gilbert, Arizona, she
was commended as “Teacher of the Year.”
Lavona and her husband, James, have three
children and nine grandchildren. They enjoy
life as snowbirds visiting their family in
Utah and Arizona. Lavona’s brothers, Colin

attended Eastern also. Colin continued his
education at Northern Arizona University

and recently retired as an educator. Frank
graduated from Brigham Young University
and then worked as an engineer for Kennecott
Copper Company. He later worked for a
school district in Evanston, Wyoming, before
retiring.
Mel J. Hannah, ’58 – Phoenix, Arizona,
attended Northern Arizona University after
graduating from EAC. Very involved in
the community, Mel has served on several
committees, such as, the Governor’s African
American Advisory Council, City of Phoenix
Environmental Quality Commission,
Ahwatukee Foothills Village Planning
Committee, ASU – Community Alliance
for Black Student
Support, Arizona
State Department of
Education and also
served as President
of the Arizona Fair
Housing Center, to
name a few.
He has over 35
years involvement
in a variety of
community
outreach and citizen
advocacy issues.
Mel J. Hannah, ’58
These experiences
began in 1973 after
being the first African American elected
to serve on the Flagstaff Arizona City
Council (elected for three four-year terms).
Subsequently, by serving on the Coconino
County Board of Supervisors, Mel is the first
and only African American in the history
of Arizona to serve on these two important
levels of government. Concurrent with his
elected positions in Flagstaff, Mel served
as an Assistant Director for the Northern
Arizona Council of Governments (NACOG).
As Assistant Director, Mel had program
responsibility for a majority of NACOG’s
human services programs, i.e. Community
Action Agency, Title XX Planning,
Area Agency on Aging, Job Training &
Employment and the Affirmative Action
Office.
After relocating to the Phoenix area in
the early 90’s, Mel has been and is currently
employed by the Greater Phoenix Urban
League (GPUL). Major functions for
the GPUL continue in the arena of
community outreach, job development,
and inter-governmental relations.
Wells remembers fondly the great
teachers, who were patient and kind, singing
tenor solos in rendition of Handel’s Messiah,
dramatics class and being a cast member of
Page Miss Glory as well as others. He was
a tennis singles champion in 1948. He said,
“The opportunities were and are there, but
you still have to get up and open the door.”
After serving an LDS mission to the
East Central States from 1938-1940, he was
in the Army Air Corp/US Air Force and
served as an instructor for B-17’s, B-24’s
and the Crew 252 from 1942-1945. He was
an insurance/real estate broker and President
CEO of Beneficial Agencies, Incorporated
and McAfee Allen, Incorporated.
Orville “Wells” Allen, ’49 – Mesa,
Arizona, enjoys teaching, genealogy
and writing family histories on the
computer and has written “Forever
Family – Allen Book & Wells Book.”
He attended EAC because of the
close ties his family had with the
college. Wells’ parents attended during
the 1894-1895 school year when it was
called the St. Joseph Stake Academy.
Classes at that time included the 3rd
th
and 4 year high school students and 1st
and 2nd year college students. Prior to his
parents attending, his grandfather hauled the
materials necessary to build the first academy
building.
