College exists to promote Orthodox spirituality, academic excellence, cultural awareness and
leadership within the Church, the Ukrainian Canadian Community and Canadian society.

To prepare candidates for the clergy for service in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada

The five year report of St. Andrew’s College
to the XXIII Sobor of the Ukrainian
Orthodox Church of Canada covers the
period from 2010 to 2015. The primary
mandate of St. Andrew’s College is the work
of the Faculty of Theology in educating and
preparing the future clergy and lay leaders of
our Church. St. Andrew’s College is also a
residence for students and is located on the
campus of the University of Manitoba. St.
Andrew’s College, together with the
University of Manitoba, co-sponsors the
Centre for Ukrainian Canadian Studies.

The Fiftieth Anniversary
of St. Andrew's College
on the University of
Manitoba Campus
1964-2014
Українська Православна Церква в Канадi
була сформована в 1918 році українськими
поселенцями Західної Канади. Спершу,
діяльність новоствореної церкви базувалась
на освічених американських і європейських
священнослужителях. У 1943 році, у зв’язку
із стрімким розповсюдженням Церкви, на
конференції духовенства було вирішено
створити Українську Православну духовну
семінарію у Вінніпезі, де був центр
українського релігійного, соціального та
політичного життя в Канаді. Таким чином, у
1946 році провінція Манітоба надала
офіційний статус Колеґії Святого Андрея.
The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada
was formed in 1918 by the Ukrainian
settlers of Western Canada. The new
Church initially depended on the American
and European educated clergy. As the
Church grew, in 1943 the clergy conference
decided to establish a Ukrainian Orthodox
seminary in Winnipeg, then the centre of
Ukrainian religious, social and political life
in Canada. In 1946, St. Andrew's College
was chartered by the province of Manitoba.
The original home of the College was the
former Anglican St. John's College located
in the north end of the city. St. Andrew's
mission was to provide quality Ukrainian
Orthodox theological and cultural education
for its future clergy and lay community
leaders. The faculty, headed by Fr. S.
Sawchuk, was enriched by the post World
War II emigrants who included such
distinguished scholars as Metropolitan
Ilarion Ohienko, Dmytro Doroshenko, Iwan
Wlasowsky, Leonid Biletsky and Yuri
Mulyk-Lutsyk.

Факультет, очолюваний о. С. Савчуком,
значною мірою збагатився післявоєнними
емігрантами, серед яких були такі видатні
вчені як Митрополит Іларіон Огієнко,
Дмитро Дорошенко, Іван Власовський,
Леонід Білецький та Юрій Mулик-Луцик.
In 1960, St. Andrew's College began
discussions with the University of Manitoba
to move the College to the university
campus in order to integrate itself into the
broader
academic
community.
The
university approved St. Andrew's as an
associate college. Upon the completion of a
modern residential and teaching complex,
St. Andrew's was officially opened in an
elaborate ceremony on July 4, 1964. The
College quickly became a focal point for
the large number of Ukrainian students on
the campus.
З метою інтеграції у більш широке наукове
співтовариство, у 1960 році Колеґія Святого
Андрея почала переговори з Університетом
Манітоби щодо переміщення на його
тереторію. Як результат, Колеґію було
схвалено як спільно діючу з університетом.
Після завершення будівництва сучасножитлового та навчального комлексу, 4 липня
1964 року Колеґію Святого Андрея було
офіційно відкрито. Вона швидко стала
координаційним центром для великого числа
українських студентів на території кампусу.

Іларіона об’єдналися під керівництвом
Церкви і духовно збагатили життя їх членів,
багато з котрих прославилися в церковному і
громадському житті. Орден Святого Андрея
був
створений,
щоб
пропагувати
і
підтримувати Колеґію.
The previously formed Orthodox student
association, the Ilarion Society, with the
guidance of the Church, unified and
spiritually enriched the lives of its members,
many of whom would distinguish
themselves in church and community life.
The lay Order of St. Andrew was created to
promote and support the College.
У відповідь на зацікавленість студентів у
мутьтикультуралізмі, Колеґія розробила
цілий
спектр
кредитних
предметів
українського спрямування, що призвело до
підписання угоди про приєднання до
університету Манітоби у 1981 році.
Новостворений
Центр
Українських
Канадських Студій став так званим мостом
між
Колеґією
Святого
Андрея
та
університетом,
залишивши
Колеґію
автономною
установою.
Як
перша
українознавча навчальна інституція в Канаді,
Центр Українських Канадських Студій добре
послуговував як і для української громади,
так і для університету.
Responding to the student interest in
multiculturalism, St. Andrew's pioneered
and developed a spectrum of credited
Ukrainian heritage courses which led to the
affiliation agreement with the University in
1981.
The newly created Centre for
Ukrainian Canadian Studies (CUCS)
became the bridge between the College and
the University while the College itself
remained autonomous.
As the first
Ukrainian heritage teaching centre in
Canada, CUCS has served well our
Ukrainian community and the university.
In its fifty years on the University campus,
St. Andrew's has earned the respect of the
university community. This respect is due to
the support of our Church and community,
to the dedicated faculty and staff and to its
Board of Directors. The generosity of the
College's donors has made it possible to
provide scholarships and bursaries for
students and to promote scholarly research
and publications of its faculty and
associates.

Колеґія Святого Андрея заслужила повагу
університетської спільноти. Таке відношення
сформоване завдяки підтримці нашої Церкви
і громади, самовідданості викладачів,
співробітників та Дирекції. Щедрість
жертводавців Колеґії дозволила забезпечити
стипендії для студентів та сприяти науковим
дослідженням та публікаціям викладачів і
партнерів.
Since 1964, the College has educated and
trained a cadre of priests for six Orthodox
jurisdictions.
The distinguished alumni
include Metropolitans WASYLY, JOHN,
YURIY, CONSTANTINE and ANTONY.

As St. Andrew's College looks to the future,
it remains committed to its mission
statement and to its Canadian focus while
exploring relations with Ukraine and the
global Orthodox community.

Сьогоднішній час прийнято називати третім
тисячоліттям. Хоча й т ермін "т исячоліт т я"
відноситься
саме
до
християнського
календаря, він також окреслює поняття так
званої західної цивілізації. Дотримуючись цієї
не цілком
ідеальної, але успішної
категоризації, перше тисячоліття ( 1-1000 р. )
можна охарактеризувати часом зародження та
виникнення, друге (1000 - 2000 р.) - періодом
змін та консолідації, епохою зародження і
розпаду
могутніх
імперій.
Зараз
ми
перебуваємо у третьому тисячолітті, яке бере
початок з 2000 року і триває до сьогодення.
Цей час характеризується як ера інформації,
глобалізації та постмодернізму.
Our time is sometimes called the third
millennium. The term “millennium”, of
course, refers specifically to the Christian
calendar and is delimited to what we call
western civilization. Following this not perfect
but useful categorization, the first millennium
(from 1 AD until 1000 AD) was a time of
origins and emergence. The second
millennium (1000 AD - 2000 AD) was a time
of change and consolidation, a heady time, in
which empires rose and fell. We are now in
the third millennium, that era from 2000 and
on. Often our own time has been also dubbed
the era of information, of globalization, or of
postmodernism.
У нас є дві установи, які викликають особливу
зацікавленість у тих, хто читає цей звіт. Перша
- це Українська Православна Церква в Канаді,
друга - Колеґія Святого Андрея. Обидві
заклали свій фундамент в минулому столітті
другого тисячоліття, і діють до цих пір.
Today, in 2015 we have two institutions that
are of particular interest to those reading this
report. First is the Ukrainian Orthodox Church
of Canada, and second, St. Andrew’s College.
Both of these venerable institutions started in
the last century of the second millennium, and
both are still here today.
Варто зазначити, що назва “Українська
Православна Церква в Канаді”, змінювалася з
плином часу. Хоча ми й продовжуємо
визнавати нашу історичну приналежність до
візантійського першопочатку, вже пройдено
той етап коли ми вживали "Українська ГрекоПравославна
Церква".
Застосування
прикметника “східна” також залишилось у
минулому, адже поняття “східний” і
“західний” у Канаді трактуються дещо поновому.
It should be noted that the title Ukrainian
Orthodox Church of Canada, has changed
appropriately with the times. In particular, the
phrase “of Canada” is a component of its
official name. Gone is the second millennium
designation of the “Ukrainian Greek
Orthodox” Church, though we still recognize
our historic allegiance to those Byzantine
beginnings. Gone too is the adjective eastern,
as we have moved into Canada where eastern
and western have new and very different
connotations.

році, а у 1981 році офіційно приєднана до
Університету Манітоби. На сьогоднішній день
Колеґія вважається лідером у вихованні та
навчальній
підготовці
українських
православних священиків та українськоканадської громади загалом. Наша місія
демонструє свою прихильність як і до церкви,
так і до української культури в канадському
суспільстві.
The second institution is St. Andrew’s
College, founded in 1946, affiliated formally
with the University of Manitoba in 1981,
which is today a leader in the training and
education for the Ukrainian Orthodox
priesthood and the Ukrainian Canadian
community in general. Our mission shows
our twin commitment to Church and culture
within that Canadian setting:
“St. Andrew’s College is the theological
school of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of
Canada”, begins our mission statement,
tying the College to the Church and
summarizing its major focus as a theological
school. The second part of our mission
focuses on purpose: “The College exists to
promote Orthodox spirituality, academic
excellence,
cultural
awareness,
and
leadership...”. Finally, our audience is
identified as being “…within the Church, the
Ukrainian Canadian community and
Canadian society.” The mission is complex,
but solid and clear.
“Колеґія Святого Андрея - це Богословська
школа Української Православної Церкви
Канади”, такими словами розпочинається
офіційно сформульована місія Колеґії, що
пов'язує її із церквою та акцентує на
богословській школі. Друга частина місії
спрямована на цілі Колеґії, які є достатньо
стійкими та чіткими: "Мета Колеґії - сприяти
розвитку
Православної
духовності,
академічної
досконалості,
культурної
свідомості та провідництва в Церкві,
Українсько-Канадській
громаді
та
Канадському суспільстві. "
Співпраця Колеґії Святого Андрея із
Університетом Манітоби сприяла створенню
Центру Українських Канадських Студій у
1981 році, який має за мету "створювати,
зберігати і поширювати знання про культурно
-історичну спадщину українців у Канаді
(Ukrainian Canadiana)." Центр підтримує тісну
кооперацію із гуманітарно-педагогічними
факультетами
Університету
Манітоби,

Cementing the 1981 agreement with the
University of Manitoba is the Centre for
Ukrainian Canadian Studies, with its stated
mission
to
“create,
preserve
and
communicate knowledge dealing with
Ukrainian
Canadiana.”
The
Centre
acknowledges its own networked connections
to various components of the larger
University of Manitoba community, in
particular the faculties of Arts, Education and
Fine Arts, and several specific Faculty of
Arts departments including History, Religion,
Economics, Political Science, and German/
Slavic Studies.

Співпрацює центр також із нещодавно
створеним
Архівом
українськоканадського досвіду. Таким чином, галузь
академічних знань про українців Канади
на тереторії Університету Манітоби
підтримується чотирма навчальними
установами: Колеґією Святого Андрея,

гуманітарно-педагогічними

The Centre also collaborates with the newest
Ukrainian-based unit on campus, the A rchives of
the Ukrainian Canadian Experience. Thus a
fourfold Ukrainian Canadian presence on the
campus of the University of Manitoba
encompasses a College (St. Andrews), a Centre
(for Ukrainian Canadian Studies) an Archives
(associated with the University library system),
and a variety of teaching units.
З моменту останнього Собору, усі п’ять
років, Колеґія продовжує виконувати своє
головне завдання – виховувати, навчати,
підтримувати наукову діяльність та
співпрацювати з громадoю. Деталі
конкретних досягнень можна знайти в
інших звітах цього видання, таких як Звіт
Декана та Діючого Ректора.
Over the past five years, since the last Sobor, the
College has continued its primary roles of
educating, training, scholarship and outreach.
The details of specific achievements can be
found in the other reports in this document,
especially those of the Dean and the Acting
Principal.
The College’s Board of Directors represents
every province from British Columbia to
Ontario. We are missing at the moment any
direct Quebec representation and are looking to
fill that gap. Our board consists of both lay
individuals and clergy. The majority of the
members are from Manitoba, since this is where
the direct “hands on” work needs to be done. As
always, we are grateful to all the Board members
who give freely their time and expertise towards
a fully functioning College.

Квебеку, та ми працюємо над тим, щоб
якнайшвидше заповнити цю прогалину.

провінції Манітоба, що допомагає
безпосередньо вирішувати усі нагальні
проблеми. Ми вдячні усім членам
Дирекції, які своїм часом і досвідом
сприяють повноцінному функціонуванню
Колеґії.
And so, as the world around us changes daily, we
take pride in a College that, to borrow from the
words of Taras Shevchenko, stands for “justice,
truth and right”. With perseverance and hard
work, we will continue to meet that challenge
until the next Sobor and beyond.

The Board carried out much of its work through its 8 committees: Finance, Academic/Publication,
Scholarship/Bursary, Personnel, Building, Strategic Planning, Board Development, and Nominating,
and five ad-hoc committees: Fundraising, Technology, Library, Joint SAC-UOCC, Stadium Parking.
Every Board member was appointed to at least one committee, or more. The Board committees met as
needed. The Board of Directors of St. Andrew’s College fulfilled all the duties and responsibilities of
its mandate faithfully and responsibly.

Having been asked by the Board of Directors
of St. Andrew’s College in 2003 to be
responsible for the Principal’s position on a
temporary basis, I immediately became aware
that St. Andrew’s College is blessed with hard
-working and talented staff.

Each year St. Andrew’s College hires student employees, usually with the help of municipal,
provincial, federal and private donor initiative grants.
Впродовж багатьох років серед персоналу
була розроблена система розподілу праці.
Завдяки чому, працівники без зайвих
клопотів можуть пристосувати навчання або
ж інший вид діяльності до гнучкого графіку
в Колеґії.
Це також виявилося досить ефективним
способом планування, що надає необхідну
допомогу під час найбільш завантажених
днів та сезонів, а впродовж відпусток такий
метод роботи є менш руйнівним для
загальної місії Колеґії.

A system of job sharing has, over the years,
been developed, mainly amongst the support
staff. Our very good staff sincerely
appreciates the opportunity to work at St.
Andrew’s College and also have the
flexibility to accommodate studies or other
work.
This has also proven to be an effective way
of planning to have sufficient help on the
busiest days or seasons, as well as making
work or study leaves and vacation periods
less disruptive to the overall mission of the
College.

I sincerely thank all academic, administrative

святкує 50-річний ювілей перебування на
кампусі Університету Манітоби. Ці тісні

A well-functioning Library is an essential
component of the educational process.
St Andrew’s College Library is just such a
source of knowledge not only for the students of
Theology, but also for all those interested in
Orthodox and Eastern Christian Theology,
Ukrainian Studies, and Ukrainian Canadian
Studies. The library is utilized by the students of
St. Andrew’s College, the Centre for Ukrainian
Canadian Studies, the University of Manitoba as
well as by members of the Ukrainian
community, researchers and the general public.
We also participate in the research and
presentations of academics from Ukraine,
Canada, the United States and abroad.

Scholars from around the world access our
library holdings including our many journals
and publications, some of which are notably
rare. Such is the assistance provided by our
Library in the research undertaken by archivist
and historian Volodymyr Vyatrovych from
Ukraine, journalist and author Andrea Chalupa
from New Uork, producers Yurij Luhovyj and
Zoryana Hrytsenko, Yuriy Kirushok from the
University of Saskatchewan Department of
Religion and Culture and Dr. Oksana Ruda,
Assistant
Professor
of
Organizational
Psychology at Kyiv International University, to
name but a few.
We were delighted with the visit of three
Rectors from Ukraine – Kyiv-Mohyla
University, Ukrainian Catholic University, and
Lviv Polytechnic University, who took great
pleasure in acquainting themselves with our
library and archival holdings.

The Library also prepares educational showcase
displays in keeping with the themes of the
season (i. e. Ukrainian Christmas, Easter,
noteworthy
literary
figures,
Ukrainian
Independence
Day,
Holodomor-Genocide
commemoration…).

Завдяки волонтерській роботі двох
студентів Університету Манітоби, Зоряна
Давидова та Левка Іванчука, було
скановано картки бібліотечного матеріалу
та вперше оцифровано. Наступним кроком
буде доступ до каталогу в електронному
форматі.
Вони
також
завершили
сортування журналів, що забезпечило
зручний доступ для студентів, викладачів
та дослідників.
Працівниками бібліотеки було розпочато
немало важливий проект - створення
каталогу дублікатів книг, який в кінцевому
результаті буде внесений до офіційного
реєстру.
Після завершення технічного курсу
бібліотекаря та
корисних настанов
добродійки Галини Тетеренко, Руслана
Давидова
стала
повноштатним
працівником бібліотеки. А багаторічна
праця
добродійки
винагородилась
заслуженою пенсією. Варто зауважити, що
при
найменшій
необхідності
вона
люб’язно простягала руку допомоги. Ми
вдячні їй за професіоналізм, відданість
справі та наполеглеву працю, якою вона
багато років безкорисливо підтримувала
діяльність Колеґії Святого Андрея.
На додаток до рутинної роботи, необхідної
для
функціонування
бібліотеки,
працівники розпочали "Проект Оновлення
Бібліотеки", який був втілений в життя
завдяки коштам з фонду ‘Levy’, який був
створений у 2010 році під час Собору
Української Православної Церкви в
Канаді.
Thanks to the volunteer efforts of two University of
Manitoba students Zoryan Davydov and Levko
Ivanchuk, the entire Library card catalogue has
been scanned into the computer. The next step will
be to make it available through the Internet. They
also sorted and organized cases of journals
providing easy access for students, instructors, and
researches.
The Library staff initiated a very significant project,
the creation of a catalogue of our duplicates
holdings. Upon completion, it will be entered into
the official register.
Following a period of mentoring by Dobr. Halyna
Teterenko, along with the completion of Library
Technician courses, Ruslana Davydova has fully
transitioned to full-time in the Library.
Dobr. Halyna Teterenko has taken a much deserved
retirement. After many years of working in our
Library, she had taken her retirement but, when the
need arose, she graciously returned to our St.
Andrew’s College Library. We are grateful to her
for
her
professionalism,
dedication
and
commitment to St. Andrew’s College and our
Library.
In addition to the regular routine work required to
maintain a smoothly operating Library, the Library
staff undertook a major “Library Revitalization
Project”. This project was the first to be undertaken
with funds from the St. Andrew’s College Levy,
which was established at the Ukrainian Orthodox
Church of Canada 2010 Sobor.

The Library Revitalization Project was a
huge
multifaceted
endeavor
which
encompassed all aspects of the Library. The
project included the following:
· asbestos abatement and painting of the
ceiling and walls;
· electrical upgrades;
· installation of computer portals and Wi-Fi
access;
· book shelves were moved and furniture
was rearranged to create more study
space;
· card catalogue was entered into the
computer for easy access;
· call number labels were retyped on all
library books and reference books;
· line-of-sight sign hangers replaced handmade paper signs on book shelf rows;
· books were rearranged on shelves with
appropriate space for expansion as
needed;
· an impressive portrait wall of historic
Ukrainian literary figures was added
(the centre piece of which is Leo
Mol’s pastel of Taras Shevchenko);
· magazine/journal shelves were replaced
with modern free-standing pocket
rotary display cases;
· new modern functional reference desk area
with complete filing access was
installed;
· ergonomic office furniture was installed
for the staff;
· historic donors photos were framed and
prominently displayed.

The Library Revitalization Project is a great success.
The function of the St. Andrew’s College Library is
greatly improved and the enhanced atmosphere is
warm and inviting and conducive to study and
research.
St. Andrew’s College Library was the recipient of a
gracious gift from Archymandryt Victor Bed’, Rector
of the Sts Cyryl and Methodious Ukrainian
Theological Academy in Uzhhorod. It is a copy of
the original text of the XVI century “Peresopnytska”
Gospel. We also gratefully acknowledge the texts
which were gifted to our library by the Ukrainian
Catholic University and Kyiv-Mohyla University,
Kyiv Orthodox Theological Academy (K.P.).
St. Andrew’s College Library is actively assisting

Невеликий, дружній, тихий гуртожиток

студентам, щоб вони могли почувати себе,

У лютому відбувається щорічний обмін
студентів, у якому беруть участь Колеґія
Св. Андрея, Інститут Св. Петра Могили в
Саскатуні, Інститут Св. Івана в Едмонтоні
та Інститут Св. Володимира в Торонто. Під
час триденної зустрічі учасники цієї події

Residence and Student Life
St. Andrew’s College is a Member College of the
University of Manitoba and also houses a
residence for Ukrainian Orthodox and other
students on the campus of the University of
Manitoba.
Residence statistics for the past five years can be
seen on the accompanying chart.
The intimate, friendly, quiet Residence has large
single, small single and double rooms available
for 38 residents – men and women. The
Residence rooms are furnished with the basic
necessities for a comfortable study life, and the
numerous College facilities available to the
students make for a homey atmosphere catering
to a wide variety of needs.
Both the Resident Student Council and the
Theology Student Association, together with the
College administration, promote and sponsor
numerous sports, social, educational, religious,
Ukrainian cultural activities, and outreach on
campus and to the broader community.
The annual Student Exchange is held in February
with participants from St. Andrew’s College
(Winnipeg), St. Petro Mohyla Institute
(Saskatoon), St. John’s Institute (Edmonton), and
St. Vladimir’s Institute (Toronto). During the
three day exchange, the participants have the
opportunity to have an open exchange of ideas,
share experiences, and become acquainted in an
academic, cultural and social atmosphere.

літню програму “Міні-Колеґія” для дітей
віком від 6 до 13 років. Щороку на програму
записується від 75 до 85 дітей, які мають
тритижневу захоплюючу програму під
керівництвом інструкторів. Програма включає
в себе вивчення української мови через
різноманітну діяльність: ігри, танці, пісні,
ручні роботи й екскурсії.
Кожна
дитина

During the summers, the College holds a
Ukrainian summer program, “MiniCollege” for children between the ages 6
and 13. Between 75 and 85 children have
enrolled each year in the exciting three week programs under the direction of the
“Mini-College”
coordinator
and
instructors.
Programming includes
Ukrainian
language development skills through a
wide variety of activities including
vocabulary enhancements, arts and crafts,
songs, sports, dance, games and
excursions.

for their continued support for the MiniCollege and Student Cultural Programs.
During the summer months, many
different groups, organizations, and
institutions book conferences, lodging,
and food services at the College.

St. Andrew’s College is a centre for our
Ukrainian and Orthodox students at the
University of Manitoba, where they feel
comfortable and at home. We provide a place
where they can meet other students,
participate in our various programs, find
counseling with our Chaplain day or night,
and participate in our regular Chapel
Liturgical cycle of services. St. Andrew’s
College is truly the “home base” for our
students on campus. We have developed our
identity on campus and are known as the
Ukrainian Orthodox centre at the University
of Manitoba.

University of Manitoba Ukrainian Students
Association continue the age-old Ukrainian
Christmas tradition of carolling, with a
Vertep, so as to share the joyous celebration
of the Birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
All of the funds collected ($2,365.) went for
medical needs of injured soldiers and
volunteer defenders of Ukraine.

Association collected funds and

Ukraine that carry out the most

PHYSICAL PLANT
Thanks to responsible long-term planning and regular maintenance strategies, our building, even
though it is fifty years old, is in good shape and is very well kept.
Major Physical Plant projects are generally scheduled for specific times. Most are planned and
included in the budget – other are unexpected and have to be taken care of immediately.
It is due to the generous support of our donors that the many projects
and good works of St. Andrew’s College are made possible.

We are sincerely grateful to the dedicated hardworking members of
the Ukrainian Orthodox Young Men’s Society of Dauphin, MB for
their continuous support over the years, including their most recent
donation of $10,000 (ten thousand dollars).
With their significant donation we engaged in a long-term
cost-saving initiative – Power Smart Lighting Project to
replace selected interior and exterior lights.
Phase 1 was the replacement of the 11 (eleven) exterior
light-post fixtures in the courtyard and along the walkway
at the front of the College. Phase 2 was the replacement of
all 39 (thirty-nine) light fixtures in the College Kitchen.
Not only is there a marked improvement to the aesthetics of
the College but it will also prove to be a great energy
efficient cost-saving initiative.




Thanks to a significant bequest from the Estate of Evelyn Sklepowich of Alameda, California,
the Front Promenade Walkway Project was done. The long and wide expanse of concrete
walkway and stairs leading to the front entrance of St. Andrew’s College were replaced. The
walkway is original to the building when it was built in 1964. It has certainly served us well, but
with age and seasonal ground heaving and shifting, it became broken, crumbling, uneven and
hazardous. The beautiful new walkway makes for a great improvement to the aesthetics of the
Building and, even more important, provides safe easy access to our impressive College.
The West Wing Residence Roof was replaced.
Third and fourth floor residence washroom showers renovation project was completed.
A Power Point Projector has been purchased thanks to a generous $1,000 donation from the
Calgary Chapter of the Order of St. Andrew.
Our opportune location, across the road from the new Investors Group Stadium, provides the College
with a regular annual income from sales of parking stalls during Blue Bomber football games and
other major events.

The majority of students are from the
Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the program
strives to meet the needs of the Ukrainian
Orthodox Church. During this reporting period
there were also students from other Churches:
Serbian,
Romanian, Coptic, Bulgarian
Orthodox and Ukrainian Catholic Churches.
The Ukrainian Orthodox students were
predominantly from Western Canada or from
Ukraine.

У травні 2014 року, Колеґія Святого Андрея
була одним із спонсорів Симпозіуму про
Українське Православ’я у Світовій Спільноті
Православних Церков: Минуле, Сучасне та
Майбутнє, що відбувся у Торонто. У
Симпозіумі приймали участь наш Канцлер, 4
професори та усі стаціонарні студенти.
Програма симпозіуму була розвиваючою та
навчальною для всіх, хто брав у ній участь, а
також дозволила викладачам та студентам
Колеґії Святого Андрея зустрітися і
поспілкуватися з представниками різних
церков України та діаспорою.
На сьогоднішній день опубліковано 15 видань
Богословського журналу "Віра й Культура".
Усі бажаючі отримати примірник можуть
звернутися до головного офісу Колеґії.
Members of the Faculty of Theology of
St. Andrew’s College were often invited to
speak at parishes, conferences or retreats and
they are happy to have more opportunities to
do so in the future.
Professors of Theology have contributed a
great deal to commissions and committees of
the Consistory. Members of the Faculty are
often called upon to assist with various
projects of the Church leadership.
In May 2014, St. Andrew’s College was one
of the co-sponsors of the Symposium on
Ukrainian Orthodoxy in the Global Family of
Orthodox Churches: Past, Present and Future
wihich took place in Toronto, ON. Our
Chancellor, 4 professors and all of the fulltime students took part in the Symposium.
The Symposium program was very uplifting
and educational for all who attended and also
allowed the professors and students of
St. Andrew’s College to meet and interact
with all the representatives of various
Churches in Ukraine and the diaspora.
The theological journal "Faith and Culture"
has successfully published fifteen issues. They
are available by contacting the College main
office.

CHAPEL
Колеґіальна Каплиця відіграє дуже важливу
роль у вихованні кандидатів в ряди
духовенства нашої Церкви. Богослуження в
Каплиці відбуваються кожного дня. Це дає
нагоду кожному студентові вправлятися в
Богослужбовому читанні та співі.
The St. Andrew’s College Chapel serves a
very important function in the training of
future clergy of our Church. Services are held
in the Chapel every day during the academic
term which gives each student an opportunity
to practice and grow stronger liturgically.
Богослуження в Каплиці не тільки дає технічну
підготовку, але й духовно готує студента і дає
можливість
плекати
самодисципліну
і
готуватися до життя та обов’язків священика.
Участь студента в Каплиці є показником, чи
кандидат надається на висвяту чи ні. Каплиця
завжди відкрита. Студенти з резиденції також
мають нагоду щодня молитися в каплиці, що
сприяє духовному зростанню майбутніх членів
нашої Церкви.
The liturgical life in the Chapel not only gives
technical training but provides spiritual
formation and the opportunity to foster selfdiscipline in preparing for the life and
obligations of a priest. The participation of a
student in Chapel life is a good indication of
whether he will be a good candidate for
ordination or not. The Chapel is always open.
Also, non-theology students have an
opportunity to pray everyday in the Chapel. In
this way, Chapel life contributes to the
spiritual growth of young people who will be
the future members and leaders in our Church.

провадить не лише літургічну практику при
Богослуженнях, але й проводить дискусії на
духовні теми (сповіді, поради) як зі студентами
Богослов’я, так і з студентами університету.
Тому що праця капеляна вимагає багато часу
(чи вдень, чи вночі треба бути готовим надати
потрібну допомогу). Тому дуже важливо, щоб
капелан постійно проживав у резиденції зі
студентами. Я дякую Дирекції Колеґії, що дає
мені таку нагоду.
The priest assigned to the Chapel, as Chaplain
of all Orthodox students of the University of
Manitoba, does not simply give practical
liturgical teaching but also provides an
opportunity
for
spiritual
discussions
(counselling and/or confession) to the
Theology students and to University students
in general. Because the work of the College
Chaplain places great demands on the time of
a Chaplain (he must be available day or night),
I believe it is important that the Chaplain live
in the College with the students. I thank the
Board of Directors of St. Andrew’s College for
the opportunity to do so.
The preparation of good candidates for ordination and the many good works of St. Andrew`s
College would not be possible without the generous support of our donors. Please remember the

STUDENTS
Крім навчання та участі в Богослуженнях,
студенти прислуговують в Архиєрейських
та в місійних Богослуженнях Вінніпезького
Деканату.
In addition to their academic studies and
participation in liturgical services, the theology
students participate in Residence and
University of Manitoba Ukrainian Student Club
Councils activities and are invited to special
Archpastoral Liturgical Services and assist in
the Winnipeg Deanery parish services.
Occasionally, students work in parishes or at
the Consistory.
Влітку студенти мають нагоду працювати
при парафіях, літніх таборах чи в
Інститутах. Особливо хочу подякувати тим
настоятелям і управам громад, які надають
можливість студентам працювати, й таким
чином набувати практичний досвід у
підготовці до висвячення.
During the summer months students have the
opportunity to work with St. Andrew’s College
Mini-College, and in the parishes, summer
camps or in the Institutes. I would especially
like to thank the priests and parish executives
who have made it possible for students to work
in our communities and thus gain practical
parish experience which helps them prepare for
ordination.

The Theology students and others in residence
benefit greatly from the proximity of
St. Andrew’s College to the University of
Manitoba. For 50 years now students have been
able to avail themselves of the excellent courses
taught at the University either to finish a B.A.
while at St. Andrew’s College or take some
courses which will help them in their future
pastoral life.

The vast majority of our students take language
courses at the University of Manitoba. Students
from Canada improve their Ukrainian language
skills in the Ukrainian courses of the Slavic
Department and all of our students from
Ukraine take courses in the Intensive English
Program of the University of Manitoba.
Whenever there is a special need, we endeavor
to arrange language tutors in addition to the
official courses.

students which we had met with
in Ukraine, arrived and began
their studies in the Faculty of
Theology. With your prayers,
they are studying well and they
and our other students will be
very good candidates for
ordination.
These students, which we
interviewed, chose and invited
from Ukraine are completely
sponsored/funded by the College.
They receive the scholarships and
bursaries that they deserve and
any amount still outstanding is
covered by the Levy Fund which

general budget of the College but
is designated for the new invited
students from Ukraine.
We continue to be very satisfied
with the progress of these three
Levy-sponsored students: Ivan
Zhovnych, Oleh Romanyna, and
Vasyl Kobrii. This year’s $9 per
member Levy has brought 3 very
good students to St. Andrew’s
College and, with the other
graduates of Theology, they will
have a positive impact on our
Church long into the 21st
century.

The Metropolitan of the UOCC is ex-officio
the Chancellor of St. Andrew’s College. He
signs and awards all Certificates, Diplomas
and Degrees of the Faculty of Theology and
as such is central to all convocations of St.
Andrew’s College.
The Metropolitan and also the Chancellor of
the UOCC are voting members of the
Academic Senate which approves all
graduates of St. Andrew’s College.
The Metropolitan and also the Chancellor of
the UOCC are voting members of the
Theology Faculty Council which affords them
the opportunity to review the progress of the
students semester by semester. They thus get
to know the students well, long before the
question of ordination comes up.
The Metropolitan and also the Chancellor of
the UOCC are voting members of the Full
Board of Directors so that they are acquainted
with, and can participate in, the direction of
all aspects of the management of St.
Andrew’s College.
As the Metropolitan and also the Chancellor
of the UOCC are members of the Senate, the
Faculty Council and the Board of Directors,
they receive minutes of all of the meetings for
their files.
The course program of the Faculty has the
approval of the members of the Sobor of
Bishops.
The Principal of the College, the Dean of the
Faculty of Theology, the Chaplain and all
who teach in the Faculty must be approved by
the Consistory.


When the Visnyk had budget issues a
number of years ago, the Board of St.
Andrew’s College decided to purchase, for
regular price, at least one full-page per
issue to support the Visnyk and benefit
from that fine newspaper.
St. Andrew’s College, many years ago,
closed its bookstore as a way of supporting
the book sales of the Consistory Church
Goods.
St. Andrew’s College provides its facilities
free-of-charge to the Consistory and the
Church for various meetings of the
Consistory.
St. Andrew’s College enabled the
Consistory to avail itself of the special
discounted hotel rates
the College
negotiated with a major hotel near the
College.
DONATIONS NOTICE—MSBI MATCHING GRANT
The Manitoba Government is continuing the Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative MSBI
for the remainder of this fiscal year - to January 15, 2015.
The Scholarship and Bursary Initiative was set up to promote donations for academic awards at
Manitoba’s
post-secondary institutions. The provincial government will match each
donation dollar for dollar, up to a maximum of the $25,000 total allocated for St. Andrew’s
College for this year. The grant is applied to new scholarships/ bursaries or to additional
contributions to existing ones.
If you would like to set up a bursary or scholarship award - or if you would like to make an
additional contribution to an existing scholarship or bursary at St. Andrew’s College, your gift
will be matched by the government - and, therefore, your donation will be doubled.
If you wish to do so, please contact the St. Andrew’s College Office at (204) 474-8895 for further
information. The deadline to make a donation under this matching grant program is January 15,
2015.
