Leadership Principles
1.
lead by example → do not expect from others what you do not want to deliver
2.
communicate → never stop listening (except for hallway gossip!)
3.
know the operation → never stop asking questions → do not assume “I know”

see issues from multiple positions → weigh up all sides and act accordingly
5.
respect for others → look for each individual’s strengths, build on these
6.
integrity & fairness → no gossiping, backstabbing → avoid granting special deals

12. do not try to disguise bad news as good news
13. short-term actions collectively result in long-term strategy
14. professional programs → treat all professionally, expect same

My View On Arrival
The Challenge(s)
The Process to: create the conditions to attract discipline
specific leadership
My View on Arrival: 2015-2020 Strategic Plan
Vision
The Faculty of Architecture aspires to offer widely recognised and highly valued
design and planning undergraduate and graduate programs that promote a
respectful, collegial, interdisciplinary culture of teaching, scholarship and
service within the University and beyond.
Mission
We aim to provide exceptional teaching, scholarship and community service in
architecture, city planning, environmental design, interior design, landscape
architecture, and emerging areas of design education and practice.
My View on Arrival: 2015-2020 Strategic Plan
Guiding principles
1. The University of Manitoba's Faculty of Architecture is committed to creating an
environment that delivers an exceptional experience in teaching, scholarship, and
community service.
2. We will achieve this by strengthening support, growth and advocacy for faculty and
students through the delivery of programs. The Faculty encourages renewal and/or
growth of professional programs to sizes that ensure their vitality and relevance, and
supports them in maintaining accreditation from their professions' accrediting bodies.
3. We will foster a culture that encourages innovation, creativity and leadership. The Faculty
encourages diverse and experimental approaches to pedagogy and scholarship, as well
as engagement in public discourse, debate and advocacy about current and emerging
issues related to the design and inhabitation of environments.
4. Faculty programs are academically accountable to the University of Manitoba.
5. Faculty graduate programs are professionally accountable to their relevant accrediting
bodies.

Challenge: Accreditation/Review – Positives
Guiding Principle: maintaining accreditation
•
The program is attracting intelligent and committed students …
•
quality of the student body brings tremendous vitality …
•
Students feel encouraged to expand their education outside of the school through events
such as design competitions and community involvement
•
Faculty members … share an enthusiasm for teaching …
•
highly qualified, accomplished and dedicated faculty members
•
individuals … deeply dedicated and passionately committed to the success of the Program
•
The internship program provides practical field experience.
•
High quality and quantity of space and resources, e.g. studios, library
Challenge: Accreditation/Review – Negative
Guiding Principle: maintaining accreditation
Resources:
• The number of regular faculty … is not sufficient to mount the professional program
• Financial resources … adequate … provided that baseline funding is available to bring the academic
component up to an acceptable level
• Deep concern about the apparent erosion of the human resource base in the Faculty
Governance & Program Structure:
• Governance had been a central concern … things seem to have deteriorated
• Poorly defined governance structure fosters confusion and ill will
• curricular and governance models must be reformed
• lack of clarity in … governance model has been a major source of stress and conflict
• Lack of clarity in the relationship between the professional programs and the interdisciplinary
program, between the graduate and undergraduate levels in the Faculty of Architecture
Students:
• student intake has declined … trends must be reversed
• Concern … that undergraduate and graduate students can be taking the exact same courses for
differing granting degree
• students … are experiencing damaging and debilitating levels of stress
• Time to completion is an issue …
• Expectations regarding the duration of the program are a surprise to students …
Faculty:
• Clearly been a breakdown in morale, sense of trust, respect and collegiality
• Many professors feel that there is very little time left for research and that research and publishing is
not particularly fostered

control and autonomy
Arising Questions ?
1. Is current program structure sustainable ?
continue all Professional programs ?
strengthen / re-align undergraduate program ?
2. Is current academic structure still serving us well ?
programs Departments ?
Schools versus Departments ?
opportunities to link with other Faculties
• Environment, Earth & Resources
• Engineering
• School of Art
3. Is “Faculty of Architecture” still the right name ? If not, what is ?
4. BID professional accredited program & MID post-professional research degree ?
5. PhD Design & Planning ?
6. ?????????????
Looking Ahead
1. Imperative to determine future academic & program structure
more impending budget reductions
