What is carbon dioxide?
Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse
that is made
naturally. You even make carbon dioxide when you
breathe out. Carbon dioxide is produced by nature,
and is also used up by

Out of the three main greenhouse gases, carbon

affected by human activity. Carbon dioxide stays in

can take up half of the carbon dioxide that is
produced by humans.

molecules. This is what makes carbon in carbon
dioxide (CO2).
After this the carbon dioxide can go into two
flowers on dry land. Since
, crops, trees
and flower are all plants they use up carbon dioxide
the plant separates the
plant separates the carbon from the oxygen. The
oxygen gets release back into the air for use to
breath and the carbon goes into the soil. However,
sometimes a plant can be eaten by an animal like a

passed out of their system as manure. The carbon in
the manure then goes into the soil. The carbon that
enters the soil increases soil organic matter (SOM).
What is soil organic matter?
What can you do?
Carbon can enter the soil through the root system
Carbon dioxide isn’t all bad because plants use it to
of a plant, manure or a decomposing plant. All these
things help increase what is called Soil Organic
Matter (SOM). Soil Organic Matter is a mix of
carbon,
and dead things.
A high soil organic matter means that there is more
nutrients and mass to the soil making it fluffier and
better for plants to
make oxygen for us to breath, but too much CO2
isn’t good either. The earth can only use up 50% of
all the CO2 produced so we have to learn how to
reduce out carbon footprint.

A low soil organic matter means that there is a low

What makes up Carbon Dioxide???
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is made up of tiny little pieces
called molecules. These molecules make up what is
called an atom, and carbon dioxide is an atom. The
two molecules that make up a CO2 atom are two
Carbon

Carbon dioxide goes into the plant, then the carbon
goes into the soil and oxygen goes into the air.
