PRE-ASSESSMENT INSTRUCTIONS
Canada Border Services Agency Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE)
The following forms, along with your payment are required at the time of registration:
ORIENTATION - PLEASE NOTE: If you answer "YES" to any of the medical screening questions,
you must obtain your physician's release to participate in the active portions of the orientation
session.
Testing and orientation sessions take place in the Brown Gym, 2nd floor Frank Kennedy Centre.
A valid Driver’s License with PHOTO ID is required by the Fitness Consultants administering the
PARE.
For access to the change rooms and facilities please identify yourself as a PARE participant to
the Customer Service staff.
Wear shorts or sweats, a short-sleeved t-shirt and runners. Locker room and shower facilities
are available at the Frank Kennedy Centre. Day use lockers are available, please bring a lock.
Please arrive early, and be ready 10 minutes prior to your appointment time.



Do not exercise or drink alcohol at least twelve hours prior to your assessment. In
addition, please do not eat, smoke, or drink caffeine beverages at least 2 hours prior to
your test.
Payment is non-transferable from person to person. The fee is good for one test only.
Unless a medical certificate is presented, no refunds will be granted. Applicants must
give 4 working days (Monday to Friday) notice to have test date changed.
Parking is free after 4:30pm and on weekends, except where designated as "24 hour
reserved". We suggest parking in U lot, where ticket parking (before 4:30 pm) is $3.00
for every 2-hours increment. Please see a map of the University of Manitoba for more
information.
Before the test administrator can proceed with the assessment, your resting heart rate and
blood pressure will be taken. This is to ensure that your heart rate is not equal to or above 100
beats per minute and your blood pressure is not equal to or above 144/94 mm Hg. These
national standards have been set as a safety precaution. If you are equal to or above these
levels, you will be asked to see your physician again to get additional permission to proceed
with the test.
