Notes from the Director’s Chair:
Happy New Year! Hope your Holiday Season was enjoyable with family and friends. The
shortest month has the most grant deadlines. This is true if you are a principle investigator,
student or post-doctoral fellow. The first major deadline is for studentships and fellowships for
MHRC on Feb. 1st. Next important deadlines are the Cancer Research Society, Canadian
Institutes of Health Research, and MHRC operating grants. Good luck to all who are applying. I
have confidence that 2013 will be a good year for MICB.
Dr. McManus has been awarded a grant from Colon Cancer
Canada and Dr. Mai was awarded a grant from Movember
Global Action Network for her studies on prostate cancer.
Not to be left out, I was awarded a CCSRI Innovation grant
for work on chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Congratulations!
Congratulations to Alexandra Kuzyk who was awarded a Nancie J. Mauro Scholarship in
Oncology Research, Sheu L. Lee Scholarship in Oncology Research, and E.I. Benjaminson
Memorial Jon Sigurdsson Chapter IODE Scholarship. These scholarships recognize an
outstanding graduate student conducting oncology research that shows the greatest promise as
a researcher.
The deadline for CancerCare Manitoba Foundation operating grants was January 23rd. We
received a record 19 applications. This indicates the degree of research undertaken at CCMB
and the need to maintain research funding for the future. Good luck to all who applied!
As many of you may know, Dr. Geoff Hicks’
laboratory has moved from MICB to the 6th floor of
the Basic Sciences Building at University of
Manitoba to be part of the Regenerative Medicine
program. He joins Dr. Afshin Raouf as MICB Senior
Scientist located on the 6th floor. This will allow Dr.
Hicks to direct this important program for the
University and CancerCare Manitoba. To fill the
laboratory space that was vacated, Dr. Etienne
Leygue will be moving his laboratory in February.
He will also become the Associate Director of
MICB.
Dr. Sachin Katyal will be establishing his research lab at MICB in March, coming to Winnipeg
from St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis. He will be located in Dr. Davie’s old lab
space on the 5th floor. Dr. Vanan will also be establishing his laboratory space in Dr. Eisenstat’s
MICB is supported by
old laboratory. He was awarded a St. Baldrick Foundation grant to start-up his laboratory
investigating pediatric brain tumours and improving tumour sensitivity to radiation therapy. It is
an exciting time as we renew the Institute after so many changes.
A panel of academic and industry speakers, including NGS platform manager Debbie Tsuyuki,
provided an overview of NGS, a more detailed look at instrumentation and consumables, and
hear directly from academics putting local NGS platforms to work. The workshop was open to
anyone who is interested in or is already using NGS in their research or diagnostic programs
and was well attended. There will be more talks and workshops in the future to ensure that we
will take advantage of the NGS technology.
Congratulations to Thomas Hack at CCMB who was awarded CIHR operating grant and a
Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation Research chair.
On January 28 Dr Jim Davie, Dr Kirk McManus, Dr Mojgan
Rastegar were the expert panelist on a CIHR Café Scientific
“NATURE AND NURTURE (NOT VERSUS): THE NEW
SCIENCE OF EPIGENETICS” at McNally Robinson. It was a
packed house and the presenters were well received.
Congratulations to all who participated in these public events.
The next Cell Biology Club will be on February 4th with a
special talk by Molly Pind on Bioinformatics, followed by Sara
Beiggi.
An Intermediate/Advanced Microscopy Workshop will be held
on June 10-19 in GCCRD. Training on spectral imaging and
SKY of mouse/human chromosomes, Multicolor banding
analysis of a single chromosome, Conventional 3D imaging,
Image quantitation of 2D and 3D fluorescent images, super resolution 3D imaging, interactive
image analysis. No application will be accepted after April 30, 2013. Early Bird Registration
March 31, 2013 : $1500 (Cdn). Registration deadline April 30, 2013 $1800 (Cdn). Cancellations
until April 30, 2013. Refund less a $500 administration fee. Please contact Dr Mai for more
information.
