Congratulations
Dr. Bruce Martin Awarded the J.A. Hildes Medal at the 14th
International Congress on Circumpolar Health
I
n 1987 the Canadian Society
for Circumpolar Health, with a
grant from the Donner Canadian
Foundation, struck a medal in
honour of Dr. Hildes. At every
International Congress five
recipients chosen by the adhering
bodies of the IUCH are awarded
the medal.
The award is one of prestige
and honour, given to those
working with the dedication
exemplified by that of Dr.
Hildes. It is an international
prize, awarded to individuals demonstrating excellence in northern medicine
and health, in consideration of their contributions through service, research and
humanitarianism. Hearty congratulations Bruce.

D
r. Frank Duerksen, an expert in leprosy surgery in South
American and Africa, a leader in diabetic foot treatment
and surgery, and now an author writes of his experiences in his
book A Mission with Passion.
Dr. Duerksen grew up in Argentina and first came to Winnipeg
in 1968 to do a one year residency with the U of M. He
then went to Ethiopia, then Paraguay, and then returned to
Winnipeg. His first trip for the NMU was in 1975 and his last
was in 2008 when he retired.

Throughout his career he would travel between Paraguay, Winnipeg, Northern
Manitoba, and Nunavut.
Growing up with the native people in Paraguay he attributed his love of the north
to the positive experiences of his youth. He remarked in a 2004 article that
Canadian First Nations people are remarkably similar to Aboriginals in South
America in their culture, appearace, and behaviour, adding "They are people in
need and they are very nice beautiful people."
You can purchase the book through the University Book Store, Bannatyne
Campus.
