Colorado Happenings
Congratulations to Art Teacher Liz Buhr and the student artists of Normandy Elementary
The student artists at Normandy Elementary School in Jefferson County recently provided artwork for
permanent exhibition in the Metropolitan State University of Denver’s School of Education’s Student
Services Office. The pieces of art reflect the creativity of 1st through 6th grade students at Normandy
and represent subject matter such as imaginary animals, typeface designs, self- portraits, and more.
The School of Education is honored to highlight these talented artists- stop in West Classroom 162 to
see the work in person!
Call for Entry Deadline Approaching Fast – February 1st, 2016
The Education Commission of the States (ECS) is offering a call for entry to local high school art students for a
commissioned on site mural. If you have been monitoring the national arts education news, recall that ECS will now be
the new home for the Arts Education Partnership so these murals will greet national and international arts education
leaders as they visit Denver to be a part of this new chapter for AEP! You can find more details by contacting their
communications lead, Amy Skinner at [email protected] or 303-299-3609. Hurry, time is running out!
I Am a Student of Culture Art Contest
The Colorado Department of Education’s Office of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education is looking for a
talented student to showcase in the “I Am a Student of Culture” art contest. The art competition is to highlight students’
artistic talents through fine art (including photography, digital media, sculpture, etc.). The winner’s work will be on the
cover of the program of the 10th Annual CLDE Academy Conference. The winner and entering teacher will also be invited
and honored at the awards luncheon. Nominations are due February 10, 2016. Check here for more information.
Collective Impact Grants
The Colorado Department of Higher Education is offering new Collective Impact Initiative Grants, intended to encourage
communities across Colorado to organize collaboration among multiple sectors - education, nonprofits, government,
business, and philanthropy. The initiatives will create (or strengthen) a collective impact approach to close the attainment
gap as students transition from high school to college. Letters of intent to apply due February 26, 2016.
Casey Veatch, CDE’s Digital Literacy Instructional Specialist has begun publishing a series of quick tutorials around free
resources to help educators in a variety of ways. This tip focuses on a delivery method, an app/webtool called Schoolbo,
and content centered around literacy, numeracy, and language development through gamification. Please visit the
#TechTipTuesday lesson here.
Items to consider while watching:
1. How can we use a gamified experience to better teach reluctant learners?
2. Can this tool be used with ELL / ELA programs?
3. What are some possible uses in foreign language classes?

Recent research in the brain sciences integrated with knowledge in education, the arts, humanities, and social sciences reveals this:
dance is nonverbal language with similar places and education processes in the brain as verbal language, thus a powerful means of
expression and communication. Dance is physical exercise that sparks new brain cells (neurogenesis) and neural plasticity
connections, the brain’s amazing ability to change throughout life and provide a network for learning any subject. Moreover, dance
is a means to help us cope with stress that can motivate or interfere with learning. Check out this article by Judith L. Hanna for more
information.
