Emily Griffith Technical College Adult Education Program Overview Adult Workforce Advisory Committee January 22, 2015 EGTC Mission Statement The mission of Emily Griffith Technical College is to provide knowledge, skills, and values that enable students to compete successfully in the workforce and to be self-sufficient citizens and lifelong learners. EGTC Overview • Serving “all who wish to learn” since 1916 • One of the country’s oldest adult English as a Second Language programs • The largest GED testing center in Colorado in 2014 • Over 50 Career and Technology Education (CTE) certificate programs linked directly to employment • Robust pathways into CTE programs that include financial, advising, and employment support • New building, new accreditation, new EG Foundation leadership, new partnerships Multiple Entry/Exit Points Partnerships Advanced Degrees (2, 4 year and beyond) Career Post-Secondary Career and Technical Education (certificate programs) ASE/GED ABE ESL Pre-College Programs Pre-College Program Overview: Adult Education • Two Adult Education Programs (500 students annually): – Adult Basic Education: • Native English-speaker literacy programs • TABE scores 4-8 reading and math – Adult Secondary Education: • Common core/GED preparation • TABE scores 9-12 reading and math • GED Testing Center Pre-College Program Overview: English as a Second Language • Six English as a Second Language (ESL) Programs (3,000 students annually) – Career Readiness – In-home tutoring – Parent Engagement – Community – Pre-Academic, Career, Technical • Vocational Transitions class* – On-the-Job Training Program at Emily’s Coffee* *Programs receiving Adult Education and Literacy Grant funding Vocational Transitions Class • Program Goal: Transition non-native English speakers into postsecondary CTE programs at EGTC – – – – – Raise TABE reading test scores (2 grade levels) Increase reading fluency Give students academic success skills Provide scholarship of up to $750 per student into CTE programs Provide student advising before transitioning to the college • Program Structure: • • • • • 9-week class (managed enrollment) 2 hours/day 5 days a week Skill and language outcomes Orientations, advising, and meetings with CTE advisors and instructors TABE pre- and post- test Emily’s Coffee Job Training Program • Program Goals: – Provide non-native English speakers with pathways to jobs in customer service/food service/retail • Conduct working interviews • Provide bus passes for transport to/from job sites – Transition OJT program completers into post-secondary Professional Baking and Culinary Arts program • Articulate completers into CTE programs without TABE test • Provide scholarship of up to $750 for CTE programs • Program Structure: • • • • • • 3-levels based on language proficiency and goals Task and language outcomes Starts every Monday 1.5 hours a day for 5 days a week Student and employment advisement Located in DPS main building (1000+ employees and students) Adult Education and Literacy Grant Funding • Vocational Transitions Program Funding Includes: – – – – – Course costs (instructor salary, books, tests, materials) Scholarships for students Pre- and post-testing Advising Administrative costs • Emily’s Coffee Program Funding Includes: • Course costs (portion of lead trainer and barista salary, materials, tests) • Bus passes for students for working interview/job shadow transport • Scholarships for students • Advising • Employer liaison Thank you!
