first school experience is positive, we offer a
nurturing and child centered approach with a
challenging, yet developmentally appropriate
curriculum. We offer hands on learning
opportunities to guide exploration and
discovery. Elmcrest UPK embraces diversity and
we are eager to learn from one another. We
believe first and foremost, that parents are their
child’s first teacher and together as partners
we will strive for each child to reach their full
potential.

“All children can learn”
AGE: 3 & 4 YEAR OLDS
About
Jowonio is an inclusive preschool on the
east side of Syracuse that has been serving
children with a wide range of abilities since
1969. With a philosophy that “all children can
learn,” staff at Jowonio focus on providing a
wide range of experiences for children to grow
socially and emotionally as well as cognitively.
Adults provide structure and positive
models in classroom environments where
children are provided many opportunities
to explore, initiate, make choices and solve
problems. These experiences extend beyond
the classroom where the gym and outdoor
spaces, including a playground, nature path
and tricycle space, provide opportunities for
engagement in gross motor and prosocial
interactions.
Classroom staff includes a team of at least
4 adults coordinated by a teacher certified
in Special Education and Early Childhood
education, with additional support services
available to classrooms and students.
Parents are partners in learning at Jowonio,
which starts with strong communication
between home and school, and family events
that are planned throughout the year for
children and families.

Providing Early Childhood Education and School Age Programming to the Families of Central New York Since 1986
AGE: 3 & 4 YEAR OLDS
About
Learn As You Grow is excited to be offering
the Early Pre-Kindergarten and Universal PreKindergarten Programs to the children and
families in the Syracuse City School District.
These programs focus on preparing children
to participate in a classroom setting, and
utilize both the Core Knowledge Language
Arts and the Second Step curricula, to assist
in developing children’s social, emotional and
cognitive growth through interactions with
their peers and our wonderful staff.
Our program includes an open door policy
that encourages parents to speak to staff
members on an individual basis regarding
the growth and development of their specific
child. As our children grow within the program
throughout the year, we continue that schoolto-home connection on a daily basis, which
allows children and families to prepare for
kindergarten in the coming years.
The program also provides outdoor activities,
which enrich our children’s day beyond
the limits of our classroom. Our wonderful
playground is an extension of the classroom
that offers the children opportunities to
explore and enjoy the outside environment by
participating in hands-on teacher led activities.
Staff
Our certified staff create an environment that is
consistent, promotes interaction and learning
through play by offering opportunities for the
children to choose activities, and is responsive
to the children’s needs. Our teaching staff are
trained to use approaches to learning that
build on children’s natural curiosity. We have
also built strong, ongoing relationships with
itinerant support teams in order to better meet
the needs of each individual child.

Learn As You Grow provides curriculum-based
programs for children 6 weeks–12 years,
including before and after EPK/UPK programs
for full day care. Our school age program
operates before and after school as well as
vacation days and holidays during the year.
School age children can also participate in
CAMP Exploration which operates full days
during the summer. Full day care begins
as early as 7:00 am through 5:30 pm and
includes a daily nutritious breakfast, lunch and
afternoon snack.
