Dr. Weeks Elementary School “C a re t y t i iv Volume 2, Issue 4 is inte llige nce in v a h g fun.” -Albert Einstein A rt r ag e v i s i t ! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - For the second year in a row, the Enrichment team has partnered with ArtRage Gallery to bring students to exhibitions. ArtRage focuses on cultural and diversity issues that exist in our society, creating a means of critical thinking. Students in fourth and fifth grade went to the exhibition, Borderlines: The Art of Consuelo Jimenez Underwood. The artists’ work reflects her personal experiences of growing up along the border of Mexico and US, including the struggles of traveling back and forth. The students were very engaged and particularly interested in Consuelo’s choice of media. She uses various materials like fabric, plastics, safety pins, paint, and others. 2 Enrichment fun - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Left page: Ms. Kleefeld’s class learned about solids, liquids, and gases. They did an experiment with bubbles to see if they would change from their liquid state to a solid state in the winter air. Right page: Ms. Babilonia’s class learned about drumming with an ordinary object, such as a bucket. They learned how to create rhythms as a team and when to properly beat the drum. Our New lesson: City Scapes - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The new unit we have been working on is about our surrounding community and what it is composed of. Each grade level will focus on one particular aspect of a community. Right now we are working on the preliminary aspects of physically building a community. At the end of the unit we will have a three dimensional cityscape built from each grade level. Mini lessons throughout the unit will cover math, science, and ELA requirements. The unit is divided in the following way: Pre-K & Kindergarten: People/Urban Animals - Community Helpers First Grade: Trees/ Plants/Insects - Habitat Plants/Gardens Second Grade: Animals – Habitats (Zoo) Urban -Suburban-Rural Third Grade: Parks & Playgrounds, Monuments and Murals – History & Culture Fourth Grade: Kinetic Park/Vehicles – Simple Machines in the City Fifth Grade: Buildings and Structures – History of Architecture 7 Food for thought: Your child’s enrichment teacher will be sending home a report card when each marking period is up. Monitoring your child’s progress can give them that extra push to succeed. Encouraging them to try their best will show positive results.
