Welcome JMU Student Athletes! A.S.P.I.R.E. to know your IX… W hat is Title IX? The university is required by Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and Department of Education regulations to implement Title IX, Prohibition of Sex Discrimination in Educational Programs and Activities Receiving Federal Financial Assistance. This requirement extends to employment and admission to the university. Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination and is covered under Title IX and Title VII. Sexual harassment is a form of gender discrimination and is prohibited under Title IX. It includes conduct that: is sexual in nature; is unwelcome; and denies or limits a student’s ability to participate in or benefit from a JMU educational activity.
