MADISON DIGITAL IMAGE DATABASE (MDID) URL: http://mdid.cit.jmu.edu LOGIN: Your JMU eID __________________________________________________________________________________ WHAT IS MDID? MDID is a searchable database of digital images and videos that lets you create presentation slideshows. Coverage spans the Late Neolithic to the present. HOW DO I FIND IMAGES IN MDID? In the MDID toolbar, use either: 1. Discover’s drop-­‐down Explore option offers a quick way to scout out MDID items. 2. Search opens a simple keyword search box. Either method above brings you to a page similar to the one below: Basket: How many images were ‘selected.’ Click on image for larger version. Use the “i” icon for more information. . Use the magnifying glass icon to see related items. Do a keyword search. Click on Collection, Format, etc. to narrow what you explore. Click box to ‘select’ image. 1 HOW DO I CREATE A PRESENTATION IN MDID? From the top Toolbar, use Organize’s drop-­‐down Create Presentation. Required: Create a title. If checked, images you have already selected and placed in the basket will load automatically when you click Create. Tags make it easy to organize your presentations. The default is to allow access to authenticated users. You may want to uncheck while your presentation is “under construction.” After you click Create, you can edit your presentation. You will see a screen similar to the one below, with 5 specific areas: 1. Presentation toolbar area 2. Slides area 3. Properties area 4. Actions area 2 5. Permissions area HOW DO I EDIT MY MDID PRESENTATION? From the top toolbar, use Organize’s drop-­‐down Your Presentations to get to the Edit page Area 1: Presentation Toolbar • Use Hide to keep an image from displaying. A hidden image will be faded and say [Hidden] in the Edit mode before the title. It will be skipped during presentation mode. (Use Show to make a hidden slide visible again.) • Use Duplicate to copy an image if you want it to appear more than once. • Use Delete to remove an image from the slideshow. • Use Add to Basket to put a selected image in the basket for use in another slide show. It will still remain in your slideshow. • Use Add All from Basket to add all selections to a slideshow. To add individual images from the basket, simply drag and drop them into the slideshow. 1. Slides area Area 2: Slides • Rearrange the Order: Drag and drop the thumbnails • View a Larger Image: Click on the slide title • Show Image Information: Click on the slide title, then click “Go to Record” 3 Add a Slide Annotation (above and to the left of your first slide): An Annotation will appear in addition to the information for the slide in your slideshow. o Click on a slide to select it. o Type in the information in the Annotation box. o Once done, hit Save in the presentation toolbar. Important: Click Save and look for “Changes to presentation items saved successfully” before navigating to another page! Area 3: Properties Towards the bottom of the page is the Properties area. This is where you can change the title of your slideshow, add a description, assign new tags, etc. •
Be sure to click Update to save any changes in this area! The “Save” at the top internal toolbar does NOT apply to this area! 4 HOW CAN I VIEW MY MDID PRESENTATION? From the top toolbar, use Organize’s drop-­‐down Your Presentations to find your presentation. Click on your presentation, then go towards the lower right corner of the page to the Actions Area. Actions Area From this box, you can: • View: View your slideshow full-­‐screen. Once open, click the “i” towards the upper left corner to display the image information and any annotations you added. • Megazine Player: View your slideshow in the web-­‐based Megazine Player. This is only useful for PDF text files. • PowerPoint: Create a PowerPoint presentation of your slideshow. The image information and your annotations will show in the “Notes” field of the PowerPoint, while the title of each image will be at the top of each slide. LINK ICONS: Click the link icon next to any Action to show a stable URL that can be shared with others and used for an Online Assignment Submission in Canvas. 5 HOW CAN MY PROFESSOR VIEW MY MDID PRESENTATION? From the top toolbar, use Organize’s drop-­‐down Your Presentations to find your presentation. Click on your presentation, then go towards the lower right corner to the Permissions Area. Permissions Area Click on the Pencil Edit icon. Use drop-­‐downs to select permissions Enter your professor’s JMU eID Click Submit Changes 6 HOW DO I CONTINUE TO ADD IMAGES TO A PRESENTATION WHILE IT’S UNDER CONSTRUCTION? 1. Important: Save your existing slide show by clicking Save in the top Presentation Toolbar. 2. Use Search in the top MDID Toolbar. Select additional images. 3. Then use Organize’s Your Presentations to return to your presentation. 4. Use Add All from Basket to add all selections to a slideshow. 5. To Add Individual Images, click on the Basket towards the upper right corner. From the drop-­‐down, click “Show.” The images will appear towards the upper left corner. Simply drag and drop them into the slideshow. 6. IMPORTANT: Click Save! 7 HOW DO I ADD MY OWN IMAGES TO MDID? 1. In the top MDID Toolbar, go to Organize. From the drop-­‐down menu, click on Create Item. 2. By the “Edit using fields template,” use the drop-­‐down and select “Art, Design and Art History.” 3. By the Label and Field area: • Leave the Label box blank (unless you want to customize the Field box differently) • Use the drop-­‐downs by Field • Enter the information in the text box (it may auto-­‐suggest) • Click the “Delete” box if you do not want that Field to show in the Image Information (optional) 8 4. IMPORTANT: Click Save! 5. Towards the lower right corner, go to the Upload Media box. • Use the drop-­‐down and select “User Content.” Click “Select and Upload Files” Select the file from your computer 6. To view, edit, or delete the image: Go to Organize in the top MDID Toolbar. From the drop-­‐down, select Your Content •

Click on the image, then click “Go to Record.” The Editing box will be towards the right-­‐hand side Click Edit Record Do your editing, then click “Save” towards the lower left corner 9
