Bio and Highlights
Bob Kolodinsky is Director of the Gilliam Center for Free Enterprise and Ethical Leadership and
Associate Professor in the Management Department of the College of Business at James
Madison University. His current research interests are in business ethics and corporate social
responsibility, executive wisdom, and social enterprise. Dr. Kolodinsky is an author of articles
published in such journals as Journal of Management, Journal of Vocational Behavior, Human
Relations, Journal of Business Ethics, and Journal of Business and Psychology. Bob has taught
courses in business ethics, human resources management, and organizational behavior (and, in
spring 2014, social enterprise). He has enjoyed teaching internationally, including in China and
India. He also has been active in a variety of service activities to his profession and to his
university with more than 30 service activities, with most at the university-level. He has been
the point person for a successful multi-million dollar fund raising effort to develop and expand
a center in the JMU College of Business. For three years running (2009 – 2011), Bob was one of
eight JMU faculty members, selected from nearly 1,000 JMU faculty members, nominated for
the state-wide Outstanding Faculty Award. Dr. Kolodinsky received his PhD in business
administration from Florida State University. Bob is a three-time small business owner and a
small business founder.

SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Award Nomination. For three years running (2009 – 2011), Bob
was one of eight JMU faculty members (selected from nearly 1,000 full-time JMU faculty
members) nominated for the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV)
Outstanding Faculty Award.
Best paper award (2010): Journal of Management. One of five winners, this award was
presented in 2010 for the following paper: Ferris, G.R., Treadway, D.C., Kolodinsky, R.W.,
Hochwarter, W.A, Kacmar, C. J., Douglas, C., & Frink, D.D. (2005). Development and
validation of the political skill inventory. Journal of Management, 31(1): 1-28. One of five
most cited articles in Journal of Management for the year 2005.
2008 Emerald Management Reviews Citation of Excellence Award for the article "Political Skill
and Influence Effectiveness: Testing Portions of an Expanded Ferris and Judge (1991)
Model", published in Human Relations volume 60 issue 12. Selected as one of the 50 best
articles published in 2007 in management and one of the top 50 from the 15,000 articles
reviewed throughout 2007. Emerald Management Reviews is an abstracting and indexing
database that covers every article in the top 300 business and management journals
world-wide including titles such as: Harvard Business Review; Strategic Management

Awarded in August 2008.
Fundraising: College of Business. Bob has been the point person for a multi-million dollar fundraising effort that (1) resulted in the 2007 development of the Gilliam Center for Ethical
Business Leadership, and (2) fall 2012 expansion of the Center to become the Gilliam
Center for Free Enterprise and Ethical Leadership.
Awarded a $6,000 JMU Center for Entrepreneurship (CFE) Summer Research Grant to support
research entitled, “Social Entrepreneurship Literature Review and Model Construction.”
Grant awarded in March, 2008.
Awarded (along with Paul Bierly) a $28,500 Kauffman Foundation grant to support research
entitled, “Entrepreneurial Propensity of College students.” Grant awarded in spring, 2006.
Thus far, four publications have come from this grant.
Awarded a $4,000 JMU Center for Entrepreneurship (CFE) Summer Research Grant to support
research on “Executive Wisdom in the Valley: A field investigation of executive wisdom
among small business executives and entrepreneurs in the Shenandoah Valley area. Grant
awarded in March, 2006.
Awarded (along with Paul Bierly) a $1,000 JMU Center for Entrepreneurship (CFE) Grant to
examine wisdom-based thinking and strategic behavior among top management team
(TMT) members and human resources managers in small and medium-sized businesses in
the Shenandoah Valley (Virginia) area. Grant awarded in March, 2005.

Awarded the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award by the Program for Instructional
Excellence, Florida State University (2000). This University-wide award was presented to
the top 14 graduate student teachers out of more than 1,100 possible nominees, all with
full course responsibility. Awardees can only win this award once.
Awarded the College of Business Teaching Assistant Award (2000) by the Dean of the College of
Business, Florida State University (2000). This competitive award was given for
outstanding teaching in the College of Business. Awardees can only win this award once.

during a 5-day period to MBA students at Northeastern University (NEU) of China, in

Instructor, United Nations Demining Program (UNDP) Senior Managers Course held at James
Madison University (fall, 2004; summer & fall, 2005; summer 2006). Taught some variation
of eight content modules to senior UNDP managers from as many as 20 countries.
Modules have included goal setting and implementation, leadership, power and politics,
organizational culture, delegation and time management, facilitation, and mentoring and
coaching.

new instructors operate effectively.
New course developer – Business Ethics & Social Responsibility (MGT 498e; IBUS 498; MBA
674). Sole developer of this new course for Spring 2007. Full course responsibilities; course
with both undergraduate and graduate students.
COB 202 Assessment Instrument (2002-present). Along with Karen Dowd, headed up a team of
COB 202 instructors to develop an 18-item semester-end assessment instrument to
measure student understanding of content related to the nine COB 202 objectives.
Refinement of instrument is ongoing.
Video clip developer (2004-present). As part of a summer 2004 teaching grant, edited and
burned onto DVDs video clips from feature-length movies and television to be used in COB
202 and other MGT classes.

Chairperson (May 2012 – present). University accreditation focal program. Multi-year
commitment to develop and facilitate ‘Ethical Reasoning and Engaged Citizenship’
workshops to all JMU full-time employees (administrators, faculty members, and staff).

Commencement Speaker, Graduate School Graduation Ceremony (May 7, 2011). Invited by the
Dean of the Graduate School to be the sole commencement speaker for graduate

Impact3 workshop leader – Topic: Ethics. Led two workshops with Impact3 participants (March
5, 2010 and October 17, 2008).
Impact3 participant (September 2009-May 2010). Selected as one of thirteen JMU employees
(and sole employee from the College of Business) to participate in year-long leadership
development program run by a team headed by the JMU Senior Vice President of Student
Affairs and University Planning.
Academic Integrity Committee (2009-present). Working with Pat Buennemeyer and others, our
committee collected data, analyzed correspondence, and made a recommendation related
to an alleged ethics breach by a JMU faculty member.
Task force member (2006-present), Strategic Leadership doctoral program. Involved in all
phases of the development and implementation of a new multi-disciplinary doctoral
program in Strategic Leadership (with three tracks: Community & Nonprofit Leadership,
Higher Educations, and Educational Leadership). James Madison University.
India Initiatives Task Force Member (March 2007). Along with three other JMU faculty
members and led by IBAVI director Craig Shealy, visited universities in Mumbai (Bombay)
and Calcutta to explore research and curricular collaborative opportunities.

IBAVI Executive Board Member (Fall 2007 – June 2009; Advisory Board Member Spring 2006 –
June 2009). Member of the executive board of the James Madison University International
Beliefs and Values Institute (IBAVI).
Facilitator, Madison Century Campaign discussion sessions (January, 2007). James Madison
University. Co-developed and facilitated two brainstorming sessions with senior faculty
and staff. Purpose was to ascertain the challenges and opportunities of raising major gifts
among JMU faculty and staff members.
JMU Faculty Representative to the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce
Community Leadership Program (October, 2006 to June, 2007). Appointment by JMU
Provost Brown. Attend monthly community workshop sessions and involved in a team
charged with developing a March 2007 session pertaining to the region’s environmental
challenges and opportunities.
Committee Member & Presidential Nominee (2006), the Madison Commission. James Madison
University. Academic Affairs subcommittee member as well. Committee charged with
reviewing various university goals and initiatives and making recommendations to Provost
Brown.

Steady and ongoing evaluation of research proposals made by various JMU stakeholders
(faculty, staff, and students).
Debate judge (Spring 2005, 2006). The annual James Madison Commemorative Debate and
Citizens Forum (aka "The Battle for the Madison Cup"). Along with other faculty, judged
debate performance by students from a wide variety of regional universities on varying
important topics (e.g., “Resolved: that the time has come for the U.S. to reinstitute a draft
for compulsory military service”). James Madison University.
University Human Resources Program Review Evaluation Team (2003-2004). Member of a
team of James Madison University faculty and staff with the charter to comprehensively
evaluate the JMU Human Resources Program, which is under the JMU Division of
Administration and Finance. Headed the Internal Processes Review team, charged with
analyzing, reporting findings, and making recommendations regarding JMU Human
Resource Program employee matters, teams, procedures, policies, and processes.

Freshman Orientation Discussion Leader (August, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006). Faculty participant

Guest lecturer to Dalian University business students visiting JMU (September 2011 and
October 2012). Topic: Ethical leadership. Invited by College of Business Dean.
Director, Gilliam Center for Ethical Business Leadership, James Madison University, College of
Business, Harrisonburg, Virginia. August, 2007 – present. Activities include business ethicsrelated curriculum enhancement, coordination of new research projects, scheduling of
outside speakers, promotion of the new center, and resources development, collection,
and dissemination (among other activities). In addition (as of Fall 2008), head up the
Masterson Ethics Paper Competition (see next item).

Chair committee, develop and revise case studies, and evaluate student case study writeups. Primary developer of a case studies used on a rotating basis.
New course developer – Business Ethics & Social Responsibility (MGT 498e; IBUS 498; MBA
674). Sole developer of this new multi-disciplinary course, implementing during the Spring
2007 semester. Full course responsibilities; course with both undergraduate and graduate
students.
Founder, primary coordinator, and member of an informal scholarship support group called
the PubClub (Spring 2006- Fall 2007) that met monthly to discuss research progress,
research techniques, and to encourage continuous research productivity.

Course director – COB 202 (December 2004-Decemer, 2007). Lead a team of COB 202
instructors in continuous attempts to improve this required COB course (15+ sections per
semester). Responsibilities have included continued refinement of the COB 202
assessment instruments, scanning for activities and supplemental materials to improve
course offering, scheduling and facilitating meetings, and mentoring seven (7) instructors
new to COB 202 (or completely new to JMU).
Award presenter (April, 2004). Presented a student academic award to Emily Millington, COB
Management Major (HR concentration) at the Annual COB Awards function.
