M° Thomas V. Fraschillo (U.S.A.)
Presidente di Giuria
Il Dott. Thomas Fraschillo da più di 40 anni
insegna presso l’Università del Mississippi e
rappresenta uno dei direttori per banda più
rinomati degli Stati Uniti. Le sue performance
musicali in qualità di direttore di banda sono
talmente alte e importanti da essere prese a
modello non solo in America ma in tutto il mondo.
Ha al suo attivo importanti incisioni discografiche,
tra cui ricordiamo: The Music of Luigi Zaninelli e
The University of Southern Mississippi “Live in Italy”
realizzate in Italia con la collaborazione del M°
Fulvio Creux e della Banda dell’Esercito. Inoltre ha curato la pubblicazione, per
conto della casa editrice BMG Ricordi, la traduzione integrale dall’italiano in
inglese di alcuni famosi trattati musicali, tra cui vanno ricordati: Studi di
Strumentazione per Banda di Alessandro Vessella, La Tecnica dell’Orchestra
Contemporanea di Alfredo Casella e Vittorio Mortari.
Il dott. Fraschillo è spesso chiamato a tenere stage, corsi di perfezionamento,
seminari e conferenze in Italia, Inghilterra, Australia, Cina e Singapore. Di
recente è stato invitato non solo a dirigere la Banda Centrale dell’Esercito di
Singapore ma anche come direttore artistico per
la settimana Winter Band Festival a Disney e Hong Kong.
Fino ad oggi egli rappresenta l’unico direttore americano ad aver avuto l’onore di
dirigere la Banda dell’Esercito Italiano durante il concerto tenutosi a Spoleto per
Il Festival dei Due Mondi.
È stato presidente della A.B.A. (American Bandmasters Association), una delle più
importanti associazioni bandistiche della quale hanno fatto e vi fanno parte
alcuni tra i più importanti compositori e direttori di musica per banda al mondo.
L’intensa attività didattico–educativa che il M° Fraschillo, nella sua lunga carriera
di insegnamento, ha rivolto ai giovani afro –americani, ha contribuito non solo a
inserire molti giovani studenti nelle migliori bande del Mississippi, ma anche a
migliorare la loro condizione
sociale.
Nel 2009 è stato chiamato in qualità di giurato al 7° Concorso Internazionale di
Composizione per Banda “R. Marenco” di Novi Ligure e il Concorso di
Composizione Originale per Banda di Corciano (Pe).
Master Thomas V. Fraschillo
Chairperson of the Jury
Thomas V. Fraschillo, DMA, has served as a catalyst and mentor for members of the
teaching profession for 50 years. His high standards of performance have had a
sustained influence on ensembles at every level, and his performances serve as models in
both the professional or academic arena. Through his recordings, The Music of Luigi
Zaninelli and The University of Southern Mississippi Wind Ensemble LIVE IN ITALY
(recorded in Italy), and his publishing, conducting, and lecturing in the United States,
Europe, Asia, and Australia, he is considered an international musician/scholar. His
publications, translations from the original Italian of Alessandro Vessella’s Studi di
strumentazione (Instrumentation Studies), and La Tecnica dell’orchestra contemporanea
(The Technique of Contemporary Orchestration) by Alfredo Casella and Vittorio Mortari,
both published by BMG Ricordi, Milan, have put his name in libraries of the entire
English speaking world. As a writer/scholar Dr. Fraschillo is a contributing editor to the
American Grove Dictionary, 2nd Edition and serves as a frequent conductor and lecturer in
Italy. His most recent appearances in Italy have been with La Banda dell’esercito/The
Italian Army Band in Rome. One of his most significant engagements with them signaled
a very important milestone for the Italian Army in that Dr. Fraschillo was the first
American-born conductor to have been invited to appear in a public performance by
what is considered Italy’s most prestigious military concert band. The concert with Dr.
Fraschillo conducting was the opening concert of the International Festival in Spoleto,
“The Festival of Two Worlds, Festival dei due mondi.” His appearance was enormously
significant for conductors of bands in that the opening performance featured such
international artists as Gian Carlo Menotti, the renowned composer, the Orchestra and
Giuseppe Verdi Chorus of Milan, and the Italian actress, Claudia Cardinale. Finally, in
Italy Dr. Fraschillo often serves as a member of the judging panel for many international
festivals, most notably the Concorso Internazionale di Composizione "R. Marenco" di Novi
Ligure, and the Concorso Internazionale di Composizione Originale per Banda di Corciano.
Aside from Dr. Fraschillo’s work in Europe, he is often engaged throughout the
continents of Asia, and Australia. The Melbourne, Australia, Summer Youth Music
Program has invited Dr. Fraschillo to be their guest conductor for their summer session
for five years. In addition, the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors Association has
invited him to lecture and to adjudicate at their large ensemble festivals. Dr. Fraschillo’s
other work in the Pacific Rim includes having served as clinician and guest conductor of
the Central Armed Forces Band in Singapore and as conductor of the Singapore AllCollege Band sponsored by the Wind Band Association of Singapore. In 2009 and 2010
Dr. Fraschillo served as Artistic Director for the weeklong Winter Band Festival at
Disney, Hong Kong.
Dr. Fraschillo has recently been recognized by election to the National Band
Association’s Hall of Fame of Distinguished Conductors, a distinct honor that recognizes
his lengthy career as a public school, university, and professional conductor.
Dr. Fraschillo devoted a significant amount of his career to the education of young
people in Mississippi. For example, his ten-year tenure at Meridian High School was
highlighted by a performance at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, the nation’s oldest and
most prestigious music event for wind and string educators. Dr. Fraschillo’s Meridian
students obtained successes not before reached, for he taught and helped place the first
African-American students in the Mississippi All-State Band. Not only were they among
the first minority members, but they were also the first African-Americans to attain the
very highest positions in the group.
Dr. Fraschillo has attained a significant level in the realm of international leadership in
that he serves as a Past President and Secretary-Treasurer of the prestigious American
Bandmasters Association, Past President of the world’s largest organization for band
directors, the National Band Association, and President of the CBDNA Southern Division.
M° ARTURO ANDREOLI (Ita)
Nato a Gambara (BS) si
diploma in Clarinetto al
Conservatorio di Brescia; si laurea in Architettura a
Venezia
e
successivamente
in
Composizione
e
Strumentazione per Banda al conservatorio di Verona.
Nel 1977 inizia la sua esperienza bandistica come
direttore con la “S. Cecilia” di Manerbio (BS). Nel 1980
ricostituisce la “G. Verdi” storica banda musicale del suo
paese e ne assume la direzione artistica e musicale.
Autore di marce, trascrizioni e arrangiamenti per banda,
nel 1986 e nel 1989 vince il 1° premio al Concorso
Nazionale di Composizione per banda “Diapason d’argento”
di Gonzaga (MN).
Dal 1987 al giugno del 2000 viene chiamato a dirigere l’Associazione
Filarmonica “Isidoro Capitanio”, banda cittadina di Brescia con la quale ha
intrapreso un’intensa attività musicale finalizzata alla valorizzazione del
repertorio bandistico originale e al coinvolgimento di compositori colti versi la
musica per banda. A tale proposito registra il CD “Musica sotto la Loggia” con
brani originali per banda di compositori bresciani contemporanei.
Nel 1990 fonda l’orchestra giovanile di fiati “Prisco Wind Ensemble” (1° premio
assoluto al 3° Concorso Nazionale per fiati “Città di Genova” del 1991 e premio
speciale quale miglior direttore).
Membro di giuria in concorsi nazionali e internazionali, dal 1999 al 2002 è
stato presidente nazionale della sezione italiana della W.A.S.B.E. Negli ultimi anni
ha intrapreso un’intensa attività come consulente artistico ed esperto presso varie
associazioni bandistiche italiane tra cui Montegiorgio (Fermo) e Villacidro (Medio
Campidano), curando con particolare attenzione il settore giovanile di cui è
profondo conoscitore.
Dal 2007 inizia la collaborazione con l’A.M.C. Aegusea Nuova “Vincenzo
Bellini” di Favignana (TP) all’interno della quale, attraverso un articolato progetto
musicale, crea la banda giovanile Njcabanda che nel corso degli anni diviene una
magnifica realtà con una propria proposta musicale.
Da sottolineare le affermazioni e i riconoscimenti che il giovane ensemble (con
denominazioni diverse) ottiene negli anni a seguire (Concorso Internazionale di
Sinnai (CA) 2011 (prima fascia, secondo premio) e 2013 (prima fascia, primo
premio); Concorso A.M.A Calabria, Lamezia Terme (CZ), 2016 (prima fascia, primo
premio).
Nel maggio 2010 viene invitato dal M° Giancarlo Aquilanti, come direttore
ospite, presso la Stanford University (California) .
Nel dicembre 2015, dopo 38 anni pieni di riconoscimenti e soddisfazioni,
termina l’attività di direttore musicale e artistico della “S. Cecilia di Manerbio
(BS).
Attualmente, oltre alla nuova attività di Master Teacher, ricopre l’incarico di
direttore artistico e musicale della Civica Banda “Giuseppe Verdi” di Gambara
(BS) e di direttore-ospite e consulente artistico della Zoccoband di Erbusco (BS).
Master Arturo Andreoli (Ita)
has enjoyed a long career associated with composition for and performance on
wind instruments. In 1972 he received a degree in clarinet performance from the
Conservatorio di Brescia, where he also attended courses in contemporary music
held by Harry Sparnaay. At this time he was also an instrumentalist (bass
clarinet, saxophone) with the Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Genova, with
which he has associated for several years. He has also studied composition with
Giancarlo Facchinetti, and is the composer of numerous works for symphonic
band. He has also had a career as music director or conductor of several
symphonic bands, including “I. Capitanio” of Brixia; “S. Cecilia” of Manerbio and
“G. Verdi” of Gambara.
Since 1999 he has been the president of the Italian section of WASBE.
M° Armando Saldarini (Ita)
Il Dr. Armando Saldarini ha diretto numerose
formazioni bandistiche e orchestrali sia in Europa che
negli Stati Uniti, ricevendo critiche positive e
riscuotendo lusinghieri risultati tra i quali spicca il
primo premio al concorso mondiale per direttori
d’orchestra di fiati “Windmaker 2006” tenutosi a
Vienna.
Si è diplomato in Tromba e in Didattica della Musica
presso il Conservatorio “G. Verdi” di Como. Dopo gli
studi in Italia, ottiene il diploma in Direzione
d’Orchestra di fiati e Fanfare presso il Conservatorio di Rotterdam, Olanda.
Successivamente, vince una borsa di studio presso la St. Cloud State University
dove diventa Graduate Teaching Assistant e Guest Conductor, completando gli
studi e conseguendo il Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting (wind band e
orchestra), studiando con il Dr. Richard Hansen. Terminati gli studi alla SCSU,
vince l’audizione e la relativa borsa di studio presso la University of Southern
Mississippi dove consegue il prestigioso titolo di Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in
Wind Band Conducting (DMA), studiando con il Dr. Thomas Fraschillo.
In qualità di strumentista, il M° Saldarini ha collaborato con numerose e diverse
formazioni strumentali, affrontando generi e stili diversi che hanno arricchito il
suo bagaglio culturale e incrementato la sua versatilità musicale. In campo
didattico, egli ha maturato una notevole esperienza grazie ai numerosi anni
d’insegnamento presso scuole di tutti i livelli, dalle scuole primarie, alle
università. Tra i suoi progetti più significativi rivolti ai giovani strumentisti si
ricordano la fondazione della banda giovanile di Besana Brianza e di Triuggio;
entrambe queste formazioni hanno ottenuto lusinghieri riconoscimenti ai più
importanti concorsi italiani di categoria.
Il M° Saldarini è ideatore, promotore e organizzatore di numerose iniziative ed
eventi musicali tra i quali si ricordano la Veniano Wind Orchestra (1998),
costituzione della Federazione Bandistica di Como (FE.BA.CO. 2000) della quale è
stato membro e presidente della commissione tecnico-artistica, direttore artistico
del Festival Bandistico Internazionale di Besana Brianza (dal 2001 al 2009), il
campus estivo per giovani Summer Wind Band (2010-presente) e fondazione del
Club Culturale Musica Viva! (2014-presente).
Attualmente, è direttore stabile del Corpo Musicale S. Cecilia di Triuggio,
dell’Associazione Musicale Gaudenzio Dell’Oca e dell’Associazione Musicale S.
Cecilia di Besana Brianza. Egli è promotore e Direttore Artistico del Club
Culturale Musica Viva. Spesso viene chiamato in giurie per concorsi bandistici
nazionali e internazionali.
Master Armando Saldarini (Ita)
Dr. Armando Saldarini conducted numerous wind bands and orchestras both in
Europe and in the United States, receiving critical acclaim and achieving results
in National and International Contests. Among them, the first prize at the
“Windmaker 2006”, an international competition for wind band conductors held
in Vienna.
Dr. Saldarini received his Diploma in Trumpet Performance and in Music
Education from the Conservatory “G. Verdi” of Como. Following his Italian
studies, he gained the Diploma in Wind Ensemble and Fanfare Conducting from
Rotterdam’s Conservatory, studying with Jaap Koops and Jos Van der Sijde. In
2009, Dr. Saldarini won an Assistantship at St. Cloud State University, where he
became Graduate Teaching Assistant completing his studies for the Master of
Music in Instrumental Conducting (wind band and orchestra) studying with Dr.
Richard Hansen. In 2011, he won the audition and gained an Assistantship at
The University of Southern Mississippi, where he becomes GTA, finishing his
studies for the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Wind Band Conducting, studying
with Dr. Thomas Fraschillo.
In addition to the conducting experiences, Armando Saldarini has other notable
activities such as trumpet player, music teacher, judge in musical competitions
and promoter of musical events/activities. Dr. Saldarini played trumpet in several
and different ensembles, performing from classical to jazz, from pop to country
music. These musical experiences enlarged his musical horizon and improved his
versatility. As music teacher he taught from elementary school to the university.
It is important the enormous success as recruiter that Dr. Saldarini had. He
founded the youth band of Besana Brianza and Triuggio. Both of these ensembles
received the highest prizes in national competitions. Dr. Saldarini promoted
several musical events/activities, among the others the Veniano Wind Orchestra
(1998), co-founder of the Federation Bands of Como (2000), artistic director of the
International Band Festival of Besana Brianza (2001-2009), promoter and artistic
director of the musical project Musica Viva! Summer Wind Band (2010-present),
promoter and artistic director of the Cultural Club Musica Viva! (2014-present).
Actually, Dr. Saldarini conducts the concert band S. Cecilia of Triuggio, the
concert band Gaudenzio Dell’Oca and the concert band S. Cecilia of Besana
Brianza. He is the promoter and the Artistic Director of the Cultural Club Musica
Viva. He is often requested as judge for National and International band
competitions.
