(Check the funding announcement) Research must align with sponsoring IC mission and goals Solicit applications in a well-defined scientific area to accomplish specific program objectives Indicate the amount of set-aside funds and anticipated number of awards Often single receipt Dates West Chester University Office of Research and Sponsored Programs Funding Announcements 5 NIH Success Rates: http://report.nih.gov/success_rates/Success_ByIC.cfm The AREA R15 Basics: Program Announcement: PA-13-313 Key Features • Project period is limited to 3 years. • Direct costs are limited to $300,000 over the entire project period. • Grants are renewable. • Preliminary data are not required. Funding Opportunity Purpose: to stimulate research in educational institutions, that have not been major recipients of NIH support. AREA grants create opportunities for scientists and institutions, otherwise unlikely to participate extensively in NIH research programs, to contribute to the Nation's biomedical and behavioral research effort. AREA grants are intended to support small-scale research projects proposed by faculty members of eligible, domestic institutions. Standard application deadlines • February 25, June 25, and October 25 West Chester University Office of Research and Sponsored Programs Goals of the Program • Support meritorious research • Expose students to research • Strengthen the research environment of the institution 6 Participating Organization(s) Components of Participating Organizations National Ins titutes of Health (NIH) National Cancer Ins titute (NCI) National Eye Ins titute (NEI) National Heart, Lung, and Blood Ins titute (NHLBI) National Hum an Genom e Res National Ins titute on Alcohol Abus e and Alcoholis m (NIAAA) National Ins titute of Allergy and Infectious Diseas es (NIAID) National Ins titute of Arthritis and Mus culos keletal and Skin Dis eas es (NIAMS) National Ins titute of Biom edical Im aging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Ins titute of Child Health and Hum an Developm ent (NICHD) National Ins titute on Deafnes s and Other Com m unication Dis orders (NIDCD) National Ins titute of Dental and Craniofacial Res earch (NIDCR) National Ins titute of Diabetes and Diges tive and Kidney Dis eas es (NIDDK) National Ins titute on Drug Abus e (NIDA) National Ins titute of Environm ental Health Sciences (NIEHS) National Ins titute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) National Ins titute of Mental Health (NIMH) National Ins titute of Neurological Dis orders and Stroke (NINDS) National Ins titute of Nurs ing Res earch (NINR) National Library of Medicine (NLM) National Center for Com plem entary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) Divis ion of Program Coordination, Planning and Strategic Initiatives , Office of Res earch Infras tructure Program s (ORIP) National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) Funding Opportunity Title Activity Code Announcement Type Related Notices Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) Number Academic Research Enhancement Award West Chester University Office of Research and Sponsored Programs earch Ins titute (NHGRI) National Ins titute on Aging (NIA) (Parent R15) R15 Academ ic Res earch Enhancement Award (AREA) Reis s ue of PA-12-006 None PA-13-313 7 Vanessa Johnson and Susan Gans, Psychology Department* • “Whole Family Biopsychology as a Marker for Adjustment” • Funded August 2010; $215,400 over three years • Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Liz Grillo, Communication and Sciences Disorders* • “Effectiveness of Telepractice by Smartphone App Technology in Preventing Voice Problems” • Funded September 2015; $410,260 over three years • National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders West Chester University Office of Research and Sponsored Programs WCU and the R15 Both of these funded grants were re-submissions of initially declined proposals. 8 *Full proposals are available at: ORSP’s R15 SharePoint Site The R03 grant mechanism will support small research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources.
