Reliable Power
Dispatch Tool Architectural Upgrade
(DTAU)
Information Session
May 12 & 13, 2010
Reliable Markets
Reliable People
Purpose
• Review of the changes to ADaMS.
• Review of go-live process for June 1, 2010.
• Participants will receive an ADaMS Participant Manual
today.
• This is an informational guide that provides clarity and
examples of dispatch instructions.
– Please ensure others from your organization receive a copy of this.
2
Overview
• Dispatch Tool and the ADaMS will be upgraded on June 1,
2010.
• Upgrades focused on improving the reliability, stability, and
sustainability of these systems.
• This was primarily through strengthening the underlying
technical architecture.
3
Requirements
• The supported platform for the upgraded ADaMS will be
Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6.
• New ADaMS URL: https://adams-2010.aeso.ca
• The AESO’s security certificate is now required to access
the new ADaMS URL.
4
Existing ADaMS Web Browser
5
New ADaMS Web Browser
• Screens in ADaMS have been updated to be clearer and more user
friendly.
6
New ADaMS Instructions
• The instruction has merged all individual dispatch & directive instructions
from the current ADaMS into one dispatch/directive instruction and has
eliminated multiple dispatches to get to the final solution.
• Any changes to dispatch or directive levels will be bolded and the cell’s
background will be colored to reflect the service type.
• Instructions include the AC value from ETS.
16:00
7
New ADaMS Instructions
• If the dispatch effective time is in the future, the time cell background will
be black and foreground is white.
• Target Low and High Values have been Included.
• Instructions clearly display which markets are being dispatched on
and/or off.
• Copy (CC) accounts receive the same information as the Dispatch (DR)
accounts.
16:00
8
Participant View
• Participants need to verify/update their contact information in ADaMS.
9
Current MW Level
Provides participants with:
• At Now MW Level
• Top of Next Hour MW Level
• RT – shows the current energy level according to the participant’s offer blocks in
ETS.
10
Dispatch History
Download Historical dispatches:
• Select the number of historical dispatch days and download in either
CSV or XLS format.
11
Generator Start-Time
• All assets with an initial start time greater than 1 hour must notify the
AESO of their intention to start.
12
Dispatch On/Off and Directive
On/Off
• Dispatch instructions will provide information on specific market
changes.
• They will indicate which markets are being dispatched on (greater than
0MW), or off (to 0MW).
– These columns can be hidden.
13
Target (Low/High)
• Low: is the suggested* minimum output level for the asset. The formula
is: Max (TMR Dispatch, Energy Dispatch) + SR Directive + SUPG
Directive + SUPL Directive.
• High: is the suggested* maximum output level for the asset, including
RR. The formula is: Max (TMR Dispatch, Energy Dispatch) + SR
Directive + SUPG Directive + SUPL Directive + RR Dispatch.
•
*The following slide contains additional information on the interpretation of these fields.
14
Target (Low/High)
Key Points on Low/High values:
• Low=High unless a unit is currently dispatched to provide
Automatic Generation Control (Regulating Reserves).
• Target (low/high) provides guidance on the minimum and
maximum MW level for an asset.
• These values are a guideline, and compliance continues to
be assessed separately for each dispatch and directive.
Adherence to this Target may NOT be sufficient to ensure
compliance in one or more of these assessments.
15
Target (Low/High)
Key Points on Low/High values:
• Participants must ensure that responding to an AS directive continues to
align with the Technical Requirements, such that the volumes directed
on must be in addition to the Real Power Output of the generating unit at
the time of the AS Directive.
Example:
• Energy Dispatch = 19MW
– Real power output = 23MW
• SUP Directive = 20MW
• Low = 39MW
High = 39MW
• However, for compliance with the Technical Requirements, the required
response to the directive is a unit output of 43MW.

Automatic Dispatch and Messaging
System (ADaMS) Dispatch Examples
17
ADaMS Dispatch Examples
• At 15:05, Asset TST1 accepted a dispatch for Energy to 350 MW.
Target Low/High is 350 MW.
18
ADaMS Dispatch Examples
• At 15:10, Asset TST1 accepted a dispatch for DDS to 25 MW, resulting
in an Energy dispatch to 325 MW. Target Low/High is 325 MW.
19
ADaMS Dispatch Examples
• At 15:22, Asset TST1 accepted a dispatch for Spinning Reserve to 75
MW, resulting in an Energy dispatch to 250 MW. Target Low/High is 250
MW.
20
Future Dispatch Scenario
• In the event that a real time dispatch is accepted for a different service
type than a future dispatch, then the future dispatch instruction will be
updated to reflect the appropriate service level.
• Participants will be notified if a future dispatch record has been updated.
• Participants will receive the following message:
– [Asset ID] Instruction for Dispatch Effective Time [time of future dispatch]
has been updated. [Service type] level changed from [ MW prior to real time
dispatch] to [ MW after real time dispatch] due to real time dispatch. Please
refer to Dispatch History for the updated dispatch levels.
21
Future Dispatch Scenario
• At 14:20, Asset TST1 accepted a future dispatch for Energy to 47 MW
and Spinning Reserve Dispatch to 15 MW.
22
Future Dispatch Scenario Example
• At 14:22, Asset TST1 receives a dispatch for RR to 15 MW.
23
Future Dispatch Scenario Example
• Once the 14:22 dispatch is accepted, the future dispatch will be updated
to reflect the change. A message will be sent to the participant,
indicating that the dispatch has been updated.
24
Process for Implementation
June 1, 2010
25
Prior to June 1, 2010
•
Historical Dispatches will be removed when the new ADaMS is in
effect. Participants must download any historical information they
require in ADaMS, prior to 12:00PM on June 1, 2010.
•
All workstations that require ADaMS accounts, will now require a
Security Certificate to access the new ADaMS. (see the following page)
•
Participants will need to use the new URL to access ADaMS.
•
https://adams-2010.aeso.ca
•
The AESO has an HTML document available to participants, upon
request.
•
Participants must reapply for Dispatch Variance Notification access,
please refer to the notice sent to participants, on May 5, 2010. For
additional information please contact [email protected]
26
Security Certificates for new ADaMS
•
All workstations that require access to ADaMS, will now require a Security
Certificate.
•
Security certificates are static, such that they are not unique to individual
users. Each computer or workstation requires one certificate.
•
Participants must contact the AESO in order to receive the security certificate,
as communicated on May 6th. (contact [email protected])
•
One security certificate will be issued to the Corporate Contact as registered in
ETS. It is their responsibility to ensure that the certificate is distributed
accordingly throughout their organization and installed on each workstation
that requires ADaMS access.
•
The security certificates should be installed immediately but will not
be valid until June 1, 2010 along with the URL.
•
The security certificate is scheduled to expire on Feb 17, 2011.
Users will not be able to access ADaMS on June 1,
if the security certificate has not been installed
on their workstation.
