LA DONNA CHE RITORNA
Four episodes produced by Endemol Italia for Rai Uno
starring Virna Lisi as a woman searching for her past
After having successfully played the part of Judge Elena Donati in the film entitled
Fidati di me, this time Virna Lisi steps into the shoes of Paola, a woman who has lost her
memory, a woman who is searching for her identity and her past. She is the star of the
new Rai Uno television drama called La donna che ritorna:
four episodes produced by
Endemol Italia for Rai Uno, written by Peter Exacoustos and Daniela Bortignoni, directed by
Gianni Lepre.
It all begins in a cold Roman night, when a woman (Virna Lisi) is found as she
aimlessly wanders about the streets of town, both terrified and alone.
She doesn’t
remember her own name, she doesn’t speak, she doesn’t know anything at all about
herself. A young police inspector named Marco Leoni (Luca Bastianello) takes care of her
while they wait for someone to recognize the woman. But a man shows up initially in the
police station, his name is Fulvio Silenti (Alessandro Bertolucci) and he claims that she’s his
mother; and 24 hours later, a farmer named Bruno Gedda (Fabio Testi) instead claims that
she’s his wife.
The two versions do not match.
The woman begins to remember
something, but very slowly and in a helter-skelter way. Unexpectedly, the young police
officer discovers that those flashes of the past that come to her mind contain information
and details that might help him capture a murderer who killed a young girl (a case he was
investigating) and other crimes, perhaps of a serial nature. The two of them therefore
collaborate with each other: a long journey in which the woman will recover herself and
her past, while helping the young police officer not only in his investigations but especially
in finding some self-confidence and love.
Some of the members of the cast are: Barbara Livi, Margherita Tamanti, Valentina
D’Agostino, Enrico Bonucci, Giancarlo Zanetti and the young Gabriele Caprio.
PLOT SYNOPSIS FIRST EPISODE
After having wandered aimlessly all night long, a woman (Virna Lisi) is found by the
police in downtown Rome. The woman is visibly frightened and confused. She doesn’t
remember anything about herself, she doesn’t speak, she doesn’t carry any sort of
identification. She is wearing an old mannish-looking coat, an elegant evening gown and a
pair of large worn-out running shoes.
There’s tension in the air at the police station: in fact, that same night the lifeless
body of a Russian model named Katia Malick has been found on a beach off the Roman
shores, in the city of Anzio. She has been strangled to death and her hair has been shaved
off.
Perhaps it is a serial crime.
Young inspector Marco Leoni (Luca Bastianello) is
banished from the squad that’s investigating into this case because during the night, while
the police was trying to save the girl’s life, he was not to be found. Police Chief Duccio
Mambor (Giancarlo Zanetti), as if to punish him further, decides to hand the case of the
nameless woman over to him. Marco is frustrated, he’d rather go on investigating into the
murder case. Hours go by, yet no one shows up to claim the woman back. Her picture is
released in the newspapers, hoping this might help. Finally, the next day, a high society
couple from Rome comes into the station asking about her.
The man, Fulvio Silenti
(Alessandro Bertolucci), recognizes her as his mother: the woman’s name is Paola Silenti.
The woman, although she does not recognize her son or her daughter-in-law Daria
(Barbara Livi), is led off and hospitalized in a posh clinic for a few days, where she will be
treated by Professor Ulpiani (Emilio Bonucci), a doctor and friend of the family. The clinic
makes Paola feels as if she is caged in, under observation and controlled. She still doesn’t
remember anything, just the odd flash with confused images comes to mind. She doesn’t
even recognize her grandson Pietro (Gabriele Caprio), who loves her to bits. But she does
remember one thing: she doesn’t know why, but she’s sure that she has already seen Katia
Malick, the murdered model, recognizing her after accidentally seeing her pictures in the
police station.
She confesses this to Marco, with whom she is slowly building up a
relationship of trust and friendship. The young inspector starts looking into the case. He
discovers that on the night she lost her memory, Paola was at a charity dinner close to the
beach where Katia’s body was found. Moreover, the same model previously posed for the
lingerie catalogue published by the company belonging to the Silenti family itself. Just a
coincidence? Marco doesn’t think so. He wants to go all the way, although they continue
to discredit him in the police station. In the meantime, the next day, a man (Fabio Testi)
and his daughter (Valentina D’Agostino) ask for Police Inspector Leoni.
The man, who
owns a small farm, shows him the identification papers of a young and very beautiful
woman – Paola as a young girl. “I’ve come to bring Luisa back”, he says, “she’s my wife”.
Who is this mysterious woman suffering from amnesia?
DIRECTOR’S NOTES
Some day, we might just open up that suitcase that we all carry along with
ourselves, the one that (a bit crammed and a bit hidden) contains our past.
That’s what happened to me… after reading the four screenplays for “La donna che
ritorna”.
Although the story is about a woman who has to reconstruct her past, in an instant
so many of the things I had forgotten came back to mind. So many of the things that I had
buried, repressed, erased – so much so that I had to check the name on the suitcase to
make sure it was mine and didn’t belong to a complete stranger.
No, it was actually mine!
Yet that mishmash of different memories, of exciting moments, madness, fears,
loves, deaths and ghosts seemed to belong to someone else.
What a mess!
I checked the name on that suitcase one more time: it sure was mine!
Then came the usual commonplace question: but how many lives have I lived?
What kind of person can I truly be if all that stuff is mine? In other words, after reading
the screenplay, after trying to identify myself with the leading character who’s searching for
herself, I found myself in the middle of a thriller of the soul.
So I closed my suitcase of memories back up again, adding a brand new lock with a
secret and safe combination (my year of birth) and said to myself: “Enough with all these
personal dramas, just concentrate on your work and have a good time if you can. Keep
your spirits high and think about the future.
Luckily you’ve got one hell of an actress
working with you, no one better than she can give her soul, life and body to the character
in the story”.
And that’s exactly what happened.
Gianni Lepre
Gianni Lepre was born in Trieste in 1947. Theatre director, television producer and
film director.
He experienced a sort of intellectual nomadism initially travelling towards North
America, where he began with his first psychodrama theatre experiences in Indian
reservations, then across Europe where he attended Peter Brook’s International Centre for
Theatre Research in Paris and other alternative theatre groups in Germany.
He landed in Scandinavia in 1972, where he founded the Thespy Teater, staging 42
plays that ranged from the classics to performances in the streets, in prisons, psychiatric
hospitals, factories and squares. He wrote and produced five plays: “Cassandra 2010”, “I
segreti di Arlecchino”, “Ragnatela”, “Samson” and “Evaresto”. The latter, which deals with
the problems of a community of people suffering from muscular dystrophy whose cast was
made up of actors and real sick people, was filmed in an N.R.K. television production and
received good reviews in Europe, Australia and India. Giving voice to the theatre, namely
the voice of those who no longer have one.
He wrote and produced, supported by the funds of Scandinavian motion pictures,
two feature films: “Il retrobottega di Enrico” (1981) and “Occhio per occhio” (1986).
He returned to Italy in 1987 and began intense activities in the field of television
dramas and programmes for the RAI network: “Il cespuglio delle bacche velenose” (1988)
starring Patricia Millardet, Roy Hansen, Thomas Arana and Franco Fabrizi; nine episodes of
the “Eurocops” serial (1989); “L'ispettore Corso” (1989) starring Diego Abatantuono;
“Contratto con la morte” (1992) starring Eleonora Brigliadori and Andrea Prodan.
Between 1993 and 1995 he collaborated with the television programmes called:
“Telefono Giallo”, “Chi l'ha visto?”, “Parte Civile”, “Confini”, “Posto pubblico nel verde”; the
first series of “Incantesimo” starring Agnese Nano, Giovanni Guidelli, Delia Boccardo and
Paola Pitagora; “Fine Secolo” (1998) starring Fabrizio Contri, Arnoldo Foà, Sergio Fantoni
and Lino Capolicchio; “Aleph” (2000) starring Antonella Ponziani and Enrico Mutti; “Vento di
ponente” starring Anna Kanakis, Serena Autieri, Maria Monti and Enrico Mutti; “Sospetti 2”
(2002) starring Romina Mondello, Irene Ferri, Sebastiano Somma and Tony Bertorelli;
“Amanti e Segreti” (2003) starring Monica Guerritore, Giula Lazzarini, O.M. Guerrini and
Luigi Diberti; “Amanti e Segreti 2” (2004) starring Christiane Filangieri, Sabrina Paravicini,
Maurizio Aiello and Monica Guerritore; "Il segreto di Arianna" (2006) starring Lorenza
Indovina, Franco Castellano and Massimo Poggio.
In the autumn of 2008, for the RaiUno channel, “Fidati di Me” starring Virna Lisi and
co-starring Claudia Zanella, Giorgio Colangeli, Toni Garrani, Martina Colombari and Flavio
Montrucchio.
2009 : “Rossella” a costume drama series for RaiUno starring Gabriella Pession,
Francesca Cavallin, Monica Guerritore, Tony Bertorelli, Giuseppe Zeno and Danilo Brugia.
