Scholarship Guide 2014-15 Office of Financial Aid utb.edu/scholarships utb.edu/financialaid 1 2014-2015 UTB Scholarship Guide Each semester scholarships are made available to students through the generous donations from corporations, businesses, community organizations, individual donors, and the university. These funds open doors for students to achieve their academic goals while relieving some of the financial costs of higher education. UTB gratefully acknowledges the generous donations of individual donors and organizations that make these scholarships possible. There are five main types of scholarships in the guide: • UTB general scholarships • Departmental scholarships • Miscellaneous scholarships • Private scholarships • State programs Any changes to these programs will be made to the online Scholarship Guide which can be found at our website at utb.edu/scholarships. UTB General Scholarships UTB general scholarships are those that are administered by the Office of Financial Aid. These scholarships have additional criteria that are in this guide. The listing of UTB general scholarships begins on page 8 of the scholarship guide. Application Process The UTB general scholarship application becomes available online each January, and interested students must apply no later than March 15. The application is available online during the application period at utb.edu/scholarships. Because most scholarships are not renewable, students must reapply yearly. In addition: • High school seniors should submit their sixth or seventh-semester official high school transcript. utb.edu/scholarships 3 • New transfer students must submit an official transcript of all previous colleges and universities attended. • Current UTB students are NOT required to submit a transcript. All official transcripts must be submitted no later than March 15 to the address below: The University of Texas at Brownsville Office of Admissions and Recruitment Enrollment Center @ The Tower, Main 1.100 One West University Boulevard Brownsville, TX 78520 Selection Process and Notification The UTB Scholarship Committee is responsible for selecting the scholarship recipients through a competitive process. All applicants will be notified via email of the committee’s decision during the latter part of the spring semester. Remember to check your UTB email daily for financial aid news. Email accounts for new students are automatically created one or two weeks prior to the first class day. If you need help, visit utb.edu/helpdesk or call 956-882-HELP. Departmental Scholarships UTB colleges and schools administer other scholarship opportunities. Students interested in applying for any of these scholarships need to inquire about the application process and deadline with the contact provided. A listing of these scholarships begins on Page 11. Miscellaneous Scholarships Miscellaneous scholarships are those administered by organizations and programs at UTB. These scholarship opportunities vary in requirements and deadlines. You may inquire about these with the appropriate contact provided. 4 Private Scholarships Private scholarships are those not directly affiliated with UTB. These scholarships are sponsored, administered and awarded by a variety of private agencies, organizations and individual donors. For complete eligibility requirements and application materials, students must contact the appropriate donor. These scholarships are advertised online at utb.edu/scholarships under “Latest Scholarships” as they become available. They are also posted on a bulletin board outside the Office of Financial Aid at the Enrollment Center @ The Tower, Main 1.100. Mailing Instructions Students awarded a scholarship from a private donor should request the funds and cover letter be sent to the address listed below. The cover letter should include student name, student ID number, program requirements and donor contact information. The University of Texas at Brownsville Office of Financial Aid, Enrollment Center @ The Tower, Main 1.100 Attention: Scholarship Coordinator One West University Boulevard Brownsville, TX 78520 Note: Scholarship checks should be made payable to The University of Texas at Brownsville. How will I receive my scholarship? Any checks sent directly to the student must be submitted to the Office of Financial Aid for processing with a copy of the congratulation letter, if one is available. Once the Office of Financial Aid ensures that the recipients meet the scholarship requirements, awards are applied directly to the student’s university account by the Office of Accounting and Finance. Unless otherwise specified, funding is divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. The University of Texas at Brownsville Enrollment Verification State Programs Some scholarship donors require that students provide verification of enrollment before funds can be forwarded to the institution. Students must sign a verification of enrollment release form at the Office of the Registrar, Enrollment Center @ The Tower, Main 1.100. State programs are in the forms of scholarships, exemptions and waivers that help students with educational expenses. A listing of the state programs and their requirements begins on Page 29 of the scholarship guide. Visit collegeforalltexans. com for the most current information. Want to Further Your Search? Other Scholarship Information Search for private scholarships by registering with a search engine that compares your background and educational interests with a database of awards. There are several “free” scholarship search engines, and below are a few suggestions: • Adventures in Education, aie.org • College Board, collegeboard.com • Fast Web, fastweb.com • Fresh: Free Scholarship Search, freschinfo.com • scholarships.com The above list was compiled by The University of Texas at Brownsville, Office of Financial Aid. It should not, however, be construed as a support of any particular organization. UTB is not responsible for the content if any of these outside sites or sources of information. Financial Need-based Awards Many scholarships are need-based awards but must still be considered by the university as part of the student’s financial-aid package. Per state and federal regulations, all awards must remain within the student’s financial need as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Financial need is the difference between a student’s cost of education and what the family or individual is expected to contribute in addition to any financial aid, including scholarships. utb.edu/scholarships 5 Applying for Federal Financial Aid Apply early for federal financial aid by completing the 2014-2015 FAFSA. 1. Get a PIN for you and your parents (if you are dependent) at pin.ed.gov. 2. Complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at fafsa.ed.gov no later than March 15. 3. Check your email or visit UTB Online regularly to view your financial aid status. Email [email protected] if you have any questions about your financial aid package. Scholarship Scams The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) provides information to help students avoid scholarship scams. FTC warns students to beware of companies that make false claims or request personal information. Do not give personal information to any organization that guarantees scholarships. The Office of Financial Aid does not recommend applying for any scholarship that charges an application fee. To learn if an organization is legitimate or to report a scam, contact one of the following: • Federal Trade Commission (FTC) 877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357) ftc.gov • National Fraud Information Center (NFIC) 800-876-7060 fraud.org • Better Business Bureau (BBB) 703-276-0100 bbb.org 6 The University of Texas at Brownsville Scholarship Tips Apply if you are eligible. Read all the scholarship requirements and directions carefully, and make sure you are eligible before you send in your application. Ask for help if you need it. If you have questions or have problems with your application, call the funding organization. Be organized. Stay on top of deadlines; plan to submit applications and all required documents at least a week prior to the official deadline. Complete your application in full. If a question does not apply, write “not applicable” on the application. Neatness counts. If a paper application is provided, always type your application. But if you must print, do it neatly and legibly. Follow instructions carefully. Answer all questions and provide everything that is required. Some scholarships require an essay; others require recommendation letters. Give it a final review. Proofread the entire application and essay carefully. You may want to ask a parent, teacher or friend to proofread it as well. Maintaining your UTB Endowed Scholarships Students are strongly encouraged to thank their scholarship donors by sending a thankyou note or letter. Expressing gratitude to donors for their interest and support of education is an important part of receiving a scholarship. When donors know that their gifts are making a difference, they are encouraged to continue their support. As a recipient of a UTB endowment scholarship, you must comply with the following conditions: • Submit the Acceptance Form online by the specified deadline if one is requested. NOTE: Funds will not be disbursed until the form is received and approved by the Office of Financial Aid. • Submit a thank-you letter or note to the Office of Financial Aid upon submission of Acceptance Form. • Attend the Annual Endowed Dinner. Formal invitation will be sent to you at a later date. A sample thank you letter, essay writing tips and additional information on scholarships can be found on our website. Keep copies of everything you send. If your application gets misplaced, you will be able to re-send your information quickly. Essay-writing Help The staff at the Learning Enrichment Writing Center helps students with the composition and grammar of the scholarship essay. Learning Enrichment, in Student Union 2.16, is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. MondayThursday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. Confirm their hours of operation at 956882-8208 or utb.edu/learningenrichment. utb.edu/scholarships 7 UTB GENERAL SCHOLARSHIPS The following general scholarships will be offered to UTB students for the 2014-2015 academic year.
