JMU Vocal Arts Camp (Junior)
July 18 - July 23, 2016
Under the direction of the Choral Area at James Madison University, talented young singers will have the opportunity to share in a
weeklong summer experience of choral singing! In addition to daily rehearsals, movement classes and group social activities, campers
receive daily Kodály-based and Orff musicianship classes. Our Junior Camp will be directed by Briana Priester, a board certified
Music Therapist and noted music educator, with classes also being taught by Joy Anderson, a national leader in Kodály music
instruction, and Melissa Largent, a noted dance instructor and choreographer. Both faculty and students from the Choral Music
Education Area at JMU support and teach in this program. James Madison University is located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley
in the center of Harrisonburg, VA and is conveniently located just off Interstate 81. Camp activities will make use of several JMU
facilities and the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall; the setting for our Vocal Arts Camp Concert on Saturday, July
23, at 11:00 am.
About Our Staff:
BRIANA PRIESTER is trained in vocal and instrumental music education, having received her degree at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory
of Music. After obtaining her Orff-Schulwerk Level I certification, Briana taught K-12general music in a private school setting. Briana elected to continue her
education and earned her licensure as a Board Certified Music Therapist. Recently returned to the Shenandoah Valley, she sings with the Shenandoah Valley
Choral Society, Emmanuel Episcopal Church, and plays with the Massanutten Brass Band. She currently runs a private practice in Penn Laird, offering music
therapy, private lessons, and developmental music classes. You can find Briana atwww.studiobmusicforliving.com.
MELISSA LARGENT is an instructor and choreographer with Vostrikov's Academy of Ballet, Virginia Youth Ballet and Theater, and Summer Regional
Governors’ School in Winchester, Virginia. Melissa’s classical ballet training began with Gennadi and Susan Vostrikov and continued with Central
Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, The Pennsylvania Ballet in Philadelphia, and Richmond Ballet in Virginia. She holds a BA in Arts Education from Skidmore
College in Saratoga Springs, New York, Montessori Certification through the American Montessori Society, and Orff-Schulwerk Level I through James
Madison University. Melissa previously worked with Apple Valley Montessori School and Winchester Montessori School in Winchester, Virginia as primary
director and music and movement instructor.
JOY ANDERSON teaches K-5 music and elementary choir at Eastern Mennonite School in Harrisonburg, VA, and is the Assistant Director of the acclaimed
Shenandoah Valley Children's Choir, where, among other duties, she teaches the Music Explorers classes for 5-9 year olds. She holds a Bachelor of Music in
Music Education from the University of Richmond, VA., a Master of Music in Music Education and Level I Orff certification from James Madison
University, and Kodály certification from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. Her level III instruction through Capital University was at the Kodály
Institute in Kecskemet, Hungary. A frequent guest conductor and clinician for local and regional school systems and music educator organizations, Mrs.
Anderson has taught in Kodály courses at James Madison University, the University of New Mexico, and Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, TX,
and currently co-coordinates the JMU Kodály course.

Camp Schedule - general:
The camp will begin on Monday July 18, 2016. The camp schedule is daily from 9:30 am – 12:00 pm. Students will participate in
choral rehearsals, musicianship classes and recreational activities. Vocal Arts Camp concludes with an 11:00 am concert on Saturday
July 23, 2016.
