COMPETENCY ASSESSMENT CROSSWALK Master of Arts in Teaching/Social Studies Aligned with NCSS 2004, and CAEP Standards Competencies NCSS Standards aligned with TEAL Reports Required Classes (Syllabi Linked to Class Number) Key Assessment(s) Aligned with Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) Benchmarks Aligned to Key Assessments and Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) Program Adjustments/Improvements Based on Benchmarks TEAL Goal 1:M.A.T. Social Studies candidates will be able to demonstrate content knowledge at admission to the internship/student teaching. Successful completion of Praxis II required prior to admission to Internship EDSC 590 Praxis II 100% of M.A.T. Social Studies candidates will attain a passing score, as determined by the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDOE), on the Praxis II examination in Social Studies. Because there was a recent programmatic change based on data gathered in recent years for this Assessment, Assessment 2 (transcript analysis), and an upcoming change in accreditation standards, faculty this year are going to be looking to see if these changes seem to be having an impact on student learning based on Praxis II scores. The cohort beginning in 2014 is the first cohort to fully experience a narrower focus on content courses as part of their summer program; their Praxis II test results need to be compared with the 2013-2104 cohort to determine if the changes are helping students learn. CULTURE AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY Social studies teachers should possess the knowledge, capabilities, and dispositions to organize and provide instruction at the appropriate school level for the study of culture and cultural diversity. TIME, CONTINUITY, AND CHANGE Social studies teachers should possess the knowledge, capabilities, and dispositions to organize and provide instruction at the appropriate school level for the study of Time, Continuity, and Change. PEOPLE, PLACES, AND ENVIRONMENTS Social studies teachers should possess the knowledge, capabilities, and dispositions to organize and provide instruction at the Although this means the new content course schedule will remain unchanged for next year, these results do indicate a new possible area of weakness in the Behavioral Sciences, and a potential need to include more Behavioral Sciences resources or assignments in the Social Studies Methods course to ensure that candidates appropriate school level for the study of People, Places, and Environments. INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT AND IDENTITY Social studies teachers should possess the knowledge, capabilities, and dispositions to organize and provide instruction at the appropriate school level for the study of Individual Development and Identity. INDIVIDUALS, GROUPS, AND INSTITUTIONS Social studies teachers should possess the knowledge, capabilities, and dispositions to organize and provide instruction at the appropriate school level for the study of interactions among Individuals, Groups, and Institutions. POWER, AUTHORITY, AND GOVERNANCE Social studies teachers should possess the knowledge, capabilities, and dispositions to organize and provide instruction at the appropriate school level for the study of Power, Authority, and Governance. PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION, AND CONSUMPTION Social studies teachers should possess the knowledge, capabilities, and dispositions to organize and provide instruction remain strong in this area (See Assessment 6). at the appropriate school level for the study of how people organize for the Production, Distribution, and Consumption of goods and services. CIVIC IDEALS AND PRACTICES Social studies teachers should possess the knowledge, capabilities, and dispositions to organize and provide instruction at the appropriate school level for the study of Civic Ideals and Practices. NCSS Standards 1-10 CAEP: 1.1-1.5, 2.2, 4.1 TEAL Goal 2: M.A.T. Social Studies candidates will demonstrate minimum content knowledge requirements for admission to the professional program. CULTURE AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY Social studies teachers should possess the knowledge, capabilities, and dispositions to organize and provide instruction at the appropriate school level for the study of culture and cultural diversity. TIME, CONTINUITY, AND CHANGE Social studies teachers should possess the knowledge, capabilities, and dispositions to organize and provide instruction at the appropriate school level for the study of Time, Prior to admission to the MAT social studies program, candidates need to demonstrate successful (grade of C or better) completion of coursework that covers 7 of the 10 NCSS standards. Undergraduate and Graduate Transcript Analysis 100% of MAT Social Studies Candidates will attain at least a grade of “C” in 7 of the 10 content courses that addresses the National Council for Social Studies (NCSS) Standards. Transcript analysis data tells us that our applicants are least likely to have taken Geography and Economics prior to acceptance into the program. In addition, three other factors also indicate a programmatic need in these areas: 1. Geography and Economics are represented on the Praxis II exam, seen in Assessment 1; 2. Both courses are taught in local high schools where candidates are likely to be hired; and 3. They are two of the four disciplines of social studies selected as key in the new NCSS standards. For all of these reasons, MAT program faculty requested the development of an MAT Geography course, which was offered for the first time in summer 2014, and taken by all outgoing candidates Continuity, and Change. PEOPLE, PLACES, AND ENVIRONMENTS Social studies teachers should possess the knowledge, capabilities, and dispositions to organize and provide instruction at the appropriate school level for the study of People, Places, and Environments. POWER, AUTHORITY, AND GOVERNANCE Social studies teachers should possess the knowledge, capabilities, and dispositions to organize and provide instruction at the appropriate school level (2013-2014 cohort). In addition, all future candidates will be enrolled in ECON 524 beginning with the 2014-2015 cohort. With the transition in content course schedules occurring while the 2013-2014 cohort was going through courses, one discipline clearly slipped through the cracks—only 3 students from this cohort took ECON 524 their first semester. This was immediately rectified for the current cohort, 100% of whom were enrolled in ECON 524 during summer of 2014. Program faculty plan to monitor both theme coverage and theme achievement to ensure candidates are meeting the NCSS themes—especially the ones in the upcoming standards, Political Science, Geography, History, and Economics—and demonstrating learning in these areas. for the study of Power, Authority, and Governance. PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION, AND CONSUMPTION Social studies teachers should possess the knowledge, capabilities, and dispositions to organize and provide instruction at the appropriate school level for the study of how people organize for the Production, Distribution, and Consumption of goods and services. SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY Social studies teachers should possess the knowledge, capabilities, and dispositions to organize and provide instruction at the appropriate school level for the study of science, technology, and society. GLOBAL CONNECTIONS Social studies teachers should possess the knowledge, capabilities, and dispositions to provide instruction at the appropriate school level for the study of Global Connections and Interdependence. CIVIC IDEALS AND PRACTICES Social studies teachers should possess the knowledge, capabilities, and dispositions to organize and provide instruction at the appropriate school level for the study of Civic Ideals and Practices. NCSS Standards: 1-10 CAEP: 1.1-1.5 2.2, 3.2.4.4 TEAL Goal 3: M.A.T. Social Studies candidates will be able to demonstrate the ability to plan instruction. PEOPLE, PLACES, AND ENVIRONMENTS Social studies teachers should possess the knowledge, capabilities, and dispositions to organize and provide instruction at the appropriate school level for the study of People, Places, and Environments. The issue of recognizing students’ specific abilities continues to be an issue in the TWS because interns are still struggling with teaching wholeclass assignments, let alone focusing on each and every individual student they have. In order to help them feel comfortable using the kinds of teaching strategies that will enable them to back away from whole-class instruction and instead incorporate successful small-group instruction--where candidates can more freely spend time with each individual student--the methods course this year will heavily focus on teaching the methods of Problem-Based Learning (PBL). The course will especially utilize technology-assisted PBL, which is gaining steam in Horry County Schools, and which candidates will need to utilize during internship. The hope is that emphasizing more inclusive and individualized methods of teaching will encourage candidates to see their students as individuals and be more adept at planning for the individual needs of their students. INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT As far as the other issue (variety CULTURE AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY Social studies teachers should possess the knowledge, capabilities, and dispositions to organize and provide instruction at the appropriate school level for the study of culture and cultural diversity. INDIVIDUALS, GROUPS, AND INSTITUTIONS Social studies teachers should lower mean and more clearly indicate areas of concern. The program is aware of these limitations, and would like to have a new instrument in place by Fall 2015. The new instrument ideally will reflect the new ADEPT form (ADEPT is the state of South Carolina’s new teacher evaluation instrument), which is slated for release Fall 2015, and which will use a 5-point scale. The program is closely monitoring the progress with the new ADEPT form, and will likely adopt that form in 2015 when the state implements the new system for new teacher evaluation. The program faculty members believe that this new form will provide better data for indicating programmatic needs. possess the knowledge, capabilities, and dispositions to organize and provide instruction at the appropriate school level for the study of interactions among Individuals, Groups, and Institutions. Assessment 3 and assessment 5 together represent each section of the TWS. The limitations of this data are clear, because the three point scale does make it more challenging to discern areas of relative difficulty or success for candidates. However, looking at trend data, it appears that candidates need work recognizing different individuals and adapting lesson plans for different students. These data have led program faculty members to reconsider the structure of the methods course. Beginning Fall 2014, the methods course for high school social studies will emphasize problem-based learning (PBL) methods, both structuring the course as a PBL environment and discussing PBL strategies throughout the semester. Along with Geography and Economics, which have been bolstered by the change in content course schedule (the effects of which will require future results to determine), it has also been mentioned that themes related to Behavioral Sciences (Psychology and Sociology, 1.4 and 1.5) also require support, and this was also found by analyzing results of this assessment. In future EDSC 549 social studies methods courses, faculty members in MAT social studies will alter the directions for Assessment 7 to specify that candidates must cover either standard 1.4 or standard 1.5, in their Socratic Seminar lesson plans to ensure that candidates demonstrate their abilities to teach Behavioral Sciences as well as the other disciplines.
