Coastal Honor Band & Scholarship Festival Important Information for Students
Coastal Honor Band & Scholarship Festival
December 2-4, 2015
Important Information for Students
Arrival and Departure: Registration will be held on Wednesday, December 2 from 4-8 p.m. in
Wheelwright Auditorium on the CCU campus. Placement and scholarship auditions will also be held
that day beginning at 4:30 p.m. Departure can be planned at any time after the conclusion of the Finale
Concert on Friday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m.
Campus Parking: On-campus parking is extremely limited and will be restricted to lot GG. Carpooling is strongly recommended. You will need to pick up a Visitor pass for parking at registration in
Wheelwright Auditorium (Building #8). A campus map can be found at:
https://www.coastal.edu/media/administration/publicsafety/pdf/ccu_map.pdf
Attendance: All students must attend all rehearsals, concerts and activities. Participants who are unable
to meet this requirement due to testing, personal or school obligations should not be nominated.
Orientation Meeting: There will be a mandatory meeting for all student participants on Thursday
morning at 9:30 a.m. in the Wheelwright Auditorium. Important information will be presented at this
meeting, including rules and procedures for behavior at the clinic as well as placement audition results
specifying assignment and seating placement for each of the bands. You are required to participate in all
activities of the clinic: rehearsals and concerts. (Your high school director should explain this policy to
you.)
Housing: For students who choose not to commute during the clinic weekend, Coastal Carolina
University will provide housing at Comfort Suites at the University for an additional fee of $60. Each
room will house 4 students; students may request roommates. Housing is limited and will be assigned on
a first come, first served basis. Deadline to request housing is November 16, 2015.
Meals: All lunch ($7.75) and dinner ($8.75) meals will be available in Hick’s Dining Hall for all
participants. Please bring cash or credit card. For resident participants (staying at the Comfort Suites),
breakfast will be available at the hotel for no additional charge.
Medical Treatment: Students and parents must complete the Medical History Evaluation form which
gives written parental permission for medical treatment in the event of an emergency. This form must be
on file with the CCU Bands before students can participate in the Festival. Students and their parents
will be financially responsible for all health care services received. If you require medical attention,
contact Dr. Richard Johnson or any CCU Band personnel.
In the event that a student becomes ill during Honor Band, the student’s parent/guardian or band director
will be called and asked to pick up the student.
Concert Attire: Concert black is suggested. Participants should dress nicely (preferably a coat and tie
for the gentlemen and a dress or pants suit for the ladies).
Placement Audition: Students should be prepared to play the following for their seat placement
audition: chromatic scale, major scales (through three flats and sharps) and sight-reading. Percussion
students may audition on snare drum, timpani, mallets or any combination of the three. Those students
auditioning on instruments such as piano, harp and string bass should prepare a short piece or excerpt
not to exceed 3 minutes.
Scholarship Auditions: Graduating seniors planning to attend Coastal Carolina University next fall
may audition for the Department of Music and for scholarship opportunities during the band clinic. If
interested, please register online at www.coastal.edu/music/audition.html or contact the University Band
Administrative Specialist at (843) 349-6480. You will need to play 2 prepared etudes or solos that will
demonstrate your lyrical and technical abilities. Region Band audition material will suffice. Please bring
3 copies of your music to your audition. Students should also be prepared to play all major scales and
sight-read. Scholarship auditions will take place on Wednesday afternoon/evening beginning at 4:30
p.m. at individually pre-scheduled appointment times. To ensure that you are eligible for all scholarships
available, you should apply for admission to the university prior to scheduling your audition by visiting

Student Belongings and Personal Property: All belongings and personal property are the
