Assessment 1 Physical Education EC-12 Test - Texas Examinations of Educator Standards™ (TExES™) Narrative Statement Description of the assessment and its use in the program: In the State of Texas according to the Texas Education Code 21.048, successful performance on educator certification exams is required for the issuance of a Texas educator certificate. The Texas Examination of Educator Standards (TExES™) in Physical Education EC-12 is a criterion-referenced examination designed to measure the knowledge and skills as delineated by the exam framework. This examination is also taken at or about the same time as the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR) EC-12 exam. Physical Education Teacher Candidates coming out of the Department of Health and Human Performance cannot sit for the exam until they have completed all necessary coursework and have cleared the department level benchmark examination. Alignment of the assessment with the standards: The Physical Education EC-12 TExES™ is aligned with NASPE Initial Physical Education Teacher Education Standards as follow: NASPE Standard 1.1 1.1 1.2 1.2 1.2 1.3 1.3 1.3 1.4 Physical Education EC-12 TExES™ - Domain I II I II III I II III III Physical Education EC-12 TExES™ Standard I II I II IV I II IV X Analysis of data: The Physical Education EC–12 test is scored on a 100–300 scale, with a passing score of 240. The overall pass rate for the 2012 calendar is 86.2% (25 out of 29 TCs) with a mean score of 254.8. Test scores are further divided into one of three domains reported by the state as a percentage score. The percentage scores for domain I ranged from 53-87 with a mean of 68, domain II scores ranged from 40-92 with a mean of 73 and domain III scores ranged from 48-88 with a mean of 75. Interpretation of data – How it provides evidence for meeting the standards: The pass rate for the UTB Physical Education EC-12 teacher candidates was well beyond the 80% mark required by NCATE for those students who completed their examinations in the 2012 calendar year. This high level of success provides ample evidence that teacher candidates have the knowledge to be a successful teacher according to the standards set forth by the state of Texas. This high success also is represented in the corresponding three domain scores which provide further evidence of the strength of the TCs in the areas of Movement and Skill Assessment 1 Physical Education EC-12 Test - Texas Examinations of Educator Standards™ (TExES™) Knowledge (domain I), Health-Related Physical Fitness (domain II), and the Physical Education Program (domain III). Generally though the TExES™ scores provide partial evidence that teacher candidates are meeting NASPE Elements 1.1 – 1.4 in terms of knowledge of physiological, biomechanical, motor learning theory, psychological/behavioral theory , motor development theory, and principles related to skillful movement, physical activity, and fitness as well as the historical, philosophical and social perspectives of physical education issues and legislation. Assessment 1 Physical Education EC-12 Test - Texas Examinations of Educator Standards™ (TExES™) Description of the Assessment This section is adapted from the TExES™ Physical Education EC–12 (158) Manual Purpose The purpose of the Physical Education EC–12 test is to measure the requisite knowledge and skills that an entry-level educator in this field in Texas public schools must possess. The test is a requirement for candidates seeking a Physical Education EC–12 certificate. Test Characteristics Number of test items: 90 multiple-choice questions. Typically, 80 multiple-choice questions are scorable and 10 multiple-choice questions are used for pilot testing purposes and are nonscorable (i.e., they do not contribute to the examinee’s score). Score scale: The Physical Education EC–12 test is scored on a 100–300 scale, with a passing score of 240. The total test score is based on an examinee’s performance on the entire test. Domain scores are based on an examinee’s performance on each domain. Within each domain a number of competencies are covered, however, competency based data is not provided to the University only total score and domain data are available to the university. Domain I Movement Skills and Knowledge (approximately 38% of the test) Standards Assessed: Physical Education EC–12 Standard I: The physical education teacher demonstrates competency in a variety of movement skills and helps students develop these skills. Physical Education EC–12 Standard III: The physical education teacher uses knowledge of individual and group motivation and behavior to create and manage a safe, productive learning environment and promotes students’ self-management, self-motivation, and social skills through participation in physical activities. Assessment 1 Physical Education EC-12 Test - Texas Examinations of Educator Standards™ (TExES™) Domain II Health-Related Physical Fitness (approximately 31% of the test) Standards Assessed: Physical Education EC–12 Standard II: The physical education teacher understands principles and benefits of a healthy, physically active lifestyle and motivates students to participate in activities that promote this lifestyle. Domain III The Physical Education Program (approximately 31% of the test) Standards Assessed: Physical Education EC–12 Standard III: The physical education teacher uses knowledge of individual and group motivation and behavior to create and manage a safe, productive learning environment and promotes students’ self-management, self-motivation, and social skills through participation in physical activities. Physical Education EC–12 Standard IV: The physical education teacher uses knowledge of how students learn and develop to provide opportunities that support students’ physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development. Physical Education EC–12 Standard V: The physical education teacher provides equitable and appropriate instruction for all students in a diverse society. Physical Education EC–12 Standard VI: The physical education teacher uses effective, developmentally appropriate instructional strategies and communication techniques to prepare physically educated individuals. Physical Education EC–12 Standard VII: The physical education teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment to promote students’ physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development in physical education contexts. Physical Education EC–12 Standard VIII: The physical education teacher is a reflective practitioner who evaluates the effects of his/her actions on others (e.g., students, parents/caregivers, other professionals in the learning environment) and seeks opportunities to grow professionally. Physical Education EC–12 Standard IX: The physical education teacher collaborates with colleagues, parents/caregivers, and community agencies to support students’ growth and well-being. Assessment 1 Physical Education EC-12 Test - Texas Examinations of Educator Standards™ (TExES™) Physical Education EC–12 Standard X: The physical education teacher understands the legal issues and responsibilities of physical education teachers in relation to supervision, planning and instruction, matching participants, safety, first aid, and risk management. The minimum passing standards for the tests were established by Texas State Board of Educator Certification with input from committees of Texas educators. The minimum passing score represents the minimum level of competency required to be an entry-level educator in Texas public schools in the field in which you tested.
