Annual Report 2010-11 28 OUTLOOK Winter 2012
2010-11 Annual Report 28 Outlook Winter 2012 A Message from the Chairman Students benefit from commitment 2011-12 SCSU Foundation Board of Trustees: Bernie Aldrich ’71 John Dunkley Janese Evans ’79 ’81 Paula Foley ’85 ’88 Dave Folsom ’69 Andy George ’80 Al Grundei ’71 Russ Hagen ’64 Al Geinen ’78 Denny Holland ’74 Tony Latta ’77 James Maciej ’73 Dee Pearson ’64 Jim Pehler ’65 ’67 Sherry Smith ’83 Robert Thueringer ’75 George Torrey Leon Westbrock ’69 Brad Wheelock ’88 Sean Whitlock ’98 St. Cloud State has changed considerably since I first stepped onto the campus as a freshman in 1974. From the multiple vantage points I have had as student, employer of fellow accounting graduates, mentor and Foundation Board member and now chair, I have watched my alma mater evolve and stay on top of the amazing changes in our communities, our state and our world. I couldn’t be more proud. And I couldn’t be more pleased with the university’s new branding promise: Education for Life. I am heartened to know that today’s students continue to benefit from a St. Cloud State commitment to giving its students an education that goes well beyond what’s in textbooks and classroom lectures, with a new focus on the elements that will help them succeed in all aspects of their life: »» Active and applied learning »» Community engagement »» Sustainability »» Global and cultural understanding It’s a great time to be involved with St. Cloud State and to be invested in the vision that President Earl H. Potter III laid out in his first year – a vision that has come to fruition. The University has reorganized its academic structure and strengthened partnerships with the greater St. Cloud community. With collaboration, leadership and support from some of those partnerships, the plans for the Fifth Avenue Live! Project truly have come to life. The Fifth Avenue corridor from the newly enlarged Civic Center downtown to a renovated and expanded National Hockey and Event Center – with Coborn Plaza, the University Welcome Center, new restaurants and retail and service businesses in between – has changed the face and the feel of St. Cloud’s historic main street. On March 2 we celebrated the groundbreaking for the first phase of the NHEC project. Another campus milestone was celebrated when Gov. Mark Dayton addressed the crowd attending the Oct. 27 groundbreaking for the Integrated Science and Engineering Laboratory Facility – or ISELF, St. Cloud State’s $45 million science teaching-and-research facility slated to be completed by 2013. “This is a landmark event in the life of our university, for many reasons,” President Potter told a crowd gathered at the construction site. “Measured in dollars, it’s the largest single construction project in campus history, creating and sustaining hundreds of jobs and laying the foundation for a research facility that will support Minnesota companies.” St. Cloud is moving forward with the support of faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the University, the business community and local and state government leaders. We all want to be part of this vibrant and dynamic university community and to invest in the place that makes dreams come true. Lindgren was happy to make his life-long career with the Herberger’s department store chain, culminating in his final position as the store manager in the current St. Cloud location. When he retired from the company, he felt that he had been fortunate in his work life and wanted to give back to the St. Cloud community. His ties to St. Cloud State through Herberger’s were so strong that when he and his wife, Jeannie, made the decision to do something to make a difference, for others now and in the future, they decided to give to St. Cloud State. When Lindgren first met Jeannie in Green Bay, Wis., she was a single mother. He remembers being impressed by the work it took for Jeannie to raise a child on her own. He witnessed the obstacles she dealt with and the struggles she overcame in trying to make her own living and raise a child by herself. Because of this intimate understanding of the extra pressures facing single parents the couple decided to help others by establishing a scholarship specifically to support the success of single mothers. Jeannie passed away in 2004, but their gift will live on and help lighten the load of other single mothers. Candidates can receive the scholarship up to four years if they are making significant progress toward a baccalaureate degree. The campus daycare facility is named the Lindgren Child Care Center 30 Outlook Winter 2012 Gifts received July 1, 2010 - June 30, 2011 St. Cloud State Foundation Net Assests Giving Societies $35,000,000 Over the years, special individuals, foundations and corporations have been a part of the St. Cloud State tradition of excellence and opportunity.
