An introduction to problem solving and algorithmic design methodology using
a high-level programming language. Topics include problem solving
techniques; subprograms and modularity; fundamental data types and
structures; flow of control statements; and file input/output. Three lecture

Introduction to Relational Database and SQL
This course will provide an introduction to relational database concepts and
the design of relational databases. It will also provide a thorough introduction
to SQL, the Structured Query Language, used to extract data from relational
databases.

Systems Analysis & Software Engineering
A thorough introduction to requirements management, and best practices in
eliciting, documenting, and verifying requirements for programming systems.
Topics include writing effective use cases, constructing UML-compliant models
(including class, state, and activity diagrams), specification of user interface
and data layers, testing, and integration.

Introduction to Multimedia Applications
Concepts of multimedia applications are introduced with a focus on
multimedia representation, processing, storage, and implementation. Topic
areas include audio, image, video, animation, compression technologies, and
standards. Tools and techniques for appropriate design and implementation of
multimedia applications will be explored.

Advanced Web Application Development
Advanced topics in the development and deployment of web-based
applications. Topics include advanced middleware programming concepts and
development of dynamic websites. Students will write a full-scale web
application as their final project.

Financial Technology
This course will provide an introduction to financial concepts and algorithms.
Students will develop online applications to gather real-time data and use
financial algorithms for pricing and monitoring of financial products.

Database Systems Design
An exploration of advanced database topics will be covered. Topics may
include the efficiency of advanced queries, indexing structures, database and
SQL optimizations, backup and recovery, NoSQL and big data concepts.

Decision Support Systems
A study of decision support systems. Topics include computerized decision
support and business intelligence systems, modeling, and methodologies.
Course will cover data and web mining concepts, knowledge management
technologies, collaboration techniques, and intelligent systems.

Software Engineering II
This course is a continuation of the software engineering design principles
introduced in Computer Science 330. Topics include project requirements,
design specifications, testing, project management and group dynamics.
Student will design, code, test and implement an information system as part of
a team project.
CSCI 495 c
Information Systems Capstone Course and Project
This senior capstone course integrates and synthesizes the material covered in
the field of Information Systems, including Systems Analysis, Project
Management, System Development and Deployment, and Security. Students
will develop a practical solution to an information systems problem.
Presentation will be both oral and written. Lecture topics may vary from
semester to semester.

Financial Technology
Course will provide an introduction to financial concepts of equities, bonds,
derivatives, the associated algorithms, and programming deployment of these
algorithms. Students will develop real-time online financial modeling
applications to deploy financial web-based systems, and conduct research into
topics in financial engineering.

Decision Support Systems
A study of decision support systems. Topics include computerized decision
support and business intelligence systems, modeling and methodologies.
Course will cover data and web mining concepts, knowledge management
technologies, collaboration techniques, and intelligent systems. Course
includes a research-based focus to explore current advances in the field.

First Year Experience
Designed to enhance the satisfaction and success of first year students. The
course focuses on developing critical and creative thinking, information literacy
skills, improving written and oral communication skills, setting personal and
academic goals, developing structured and consistent study habits, practicing
effective time management, and becoming contributing members of the
Coastal community. This course is a graduation requirement.

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT / SUPPORT ACTIVITIES
Degree Program Development
Degree program development focuses on creating a new Information
Systems undergraduate program, a new Information Technology program,
and a minor in Web Application Development. Current work includes a new
master of science focusing on security. Tasks include researching other
programs of study, targeting curriculum changes, meeting accreditation
standards, and filing required paperwork.
Course Development
Course development varies from redesigning existing courses to creating new
courses. Course development includes evaluating the current curriculum
needs, planning, and implementing changes. Oversee textbook review and
selection process. Course development includes creating new administrative
documentation, schedules, tutorials, lectures, and textbook selections where
necessary.
Multimedia Mini-Lab
Develop request for grant technology funding to create a Multimedia MiniLab. Lab includes multimedia software, Leap Motion, and Microsoft Kinect
for PC equipment. Mini-lab is available for out-of-classroom practice and
tutoring.
High Performance Computer Laboratory
Develop request for grant funding to upgrade the High Performance
Laboratory for compliance with Massive Software. Other tasks include
equipment research and pricing, justification documentation development,
and the filing of appropriate paperwork.
Physical Action Labs
Develop a series of hands-on “Physical Action Labs” related to various topics
in computer science and/or information systems. Tasks include
brainstorming ideas, researching equipment needs and costs, designing inclass activities, assessment of knowledge, and follow-up surveys. Action labs
include such topics as RFID, PC Building, Google, and UNIX.
