Parent Resources Common Core As we transition into the Common Core Standards, many parents have questions about what this means and how they can support their students. We recently came upon an excellent resource which is aptly titled, Be a Learning Hero. The website offers many ideas, information, and videos that will help you be a hero in your child’s education. You will find the link below: http://www.bealearninghero.org/ Mindset In January, administration will be meeting with all fourth and fifth graders to discuss the idea of Mindset. We want students to start developing a growth mindset and realize that their intelligence, skills, and talents are not fixed. This thinking helps students feel ready for new challenges and less fearful of making mistakes while learning. Mistakes are a part of the learning process! If you are interested in learning more about the growth mindset, we encourage you to check out the book entitled Mindset by Carol Dweck. Meanwhile, one thing you can do as a parent is examine the praise that you give to your child. Studies show that kids who are praised a lot conclude that someone is constantly evaluating their performance. They become more insecure about expressing their own ideas and opinions, worried about whether they will measure up. Instead, try one of the following: 1. Be specific in your feedback: “You counted from zero to twenty!” 2. Encourage effort rather than results: “You’re working so hard on that…Just a little more practice and you’ll nail it!” 3. Ask questions to help your child reflect and let him/her be the one to evaluate: “Do you like the way it came out? Why or why not?” 4. Empower by pointing out the results of his/her behavior: “Look how happy your friend is to have a turn with your toy.” 5. Express your own feelings, including gratitude: “I love it when we work as a team like this! Thanks so much for helping me.” Congratulations to our November Award Recipients 1st – 3rd We apologize – Our 4th and 5th grade picture is not available.
