7-3 Napoleon Creates an Empire Napoleon rises from obscure military officer to ruler of France His desire to conquer all of Europe would be his ultimate undoing A. France loses territory Loss of American Territories 1. Saint Dominique (Haiti) due to rebellion 2. Louisiana Territory (Purchase) sold to US to make money for his wars and to hurt the English (France’s enemy) I. Napoleon Seizes Power A. Hero of the Hour 1. 1795—Napoleon defends delegates of the National Convention against an army loyal to the monarchy 2. 1796—Directory puts Napoleon in charge of French forces. He wins military battles in Italy but loses in Egypt. B. Coup d’Etat 1. 1799–Directory lost control of the country and the people’s confidence 2. Napoleon seized power by surrounding the National Legislature, forcing out its members, dissolving the Directory, and establishing group of 3 Consuls to rule the country (He is one Consul) 3.
