IR provides timely, accurate and relevant data and information to external and internal constituencies. About the Office of Institutional Research The Office of Institutional Research employs diverse technical tools to advance AUC’s mission and promote effective decision-making. Across these different specializations, we offer a variety of services to support AUC’s academic and administrative units and external constituencies with planning, assessment, research, and testing. In addition, IR also ensures AUC submits timely reports to American and Egyptian government organizations and accreditation bodies. In our role as the clearinghouse for university data, IR is committed to transparency, a culture of evidence and open communication to inform the campus community and external constituencies. IR also serves as a conduit to facilitate the flow of information between administrative units and academic departments. Planning Supports strategic planning and decision making through the analysis, presentation, and distribution of relevant and timely information. Proactive in generating institutional analyses to enhance the academic planning process. Develops feasibility studies to inform institutional planning and programmatic proposals. Assessment Leads, coordinates, and advances the university’s institutional, program, and unit-based assessment activities. Provides expertise and general leadership and coordination for program and unit assessment. Develops faculty and administrator capacities for effective outcomes assessment and related topics. Research Serves the university as a repository of information and maintains of AUC’s institutional databases. Responds to internal and external requests for information about the institutional characteristics of AUC, including reports and analyses for institutional decision making and planning. Develops, conducts, and provides analyses for institutional surveys. Office of Institutional Research Page 1 Testing Provides assessment and evaluation support for AUC through the collection and processing of test data. Provides both academic and non-academic units at AUC with scanning, scoring, and reporting for their testing needs. Administers diagnostic tests for current and prospective students, as well as administering exams for other testing institutions, other universities abroad, and distance learners. IR also provides a wide array of services to the AUC community, including consulting on assessment, feasibility studies, survey services, focus groups, training and workshops, test scanning services, and the administration of ELPET and the SAT standardized exams. The IR Office coordinates and supports programmatic accreditations and institution-wide accreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). IR also provides technical assistance for academic unit self-studies. SCE’s regularly scheduled courses and certificate programs are offered at AUC Downtown, Heliopolis, Zamalek and El Gouna. Courses and certificate programs have been developed to be offered at AUC New Cairo, and customized courses may be conducted on site at the organization’s facilities. Ten laboratories allow for state-of-the-art computer and English-language training at AUC Downtown. Special summer youth programs provide academic enrichment and skill development for children. Its programs include intensive courses, professional certificate programs, distance education, customized training, collaborative certification programs with international agencies, technical assistance and applied research to help the local industry meet the challenges of the international market. In the fiscal year 2010 - 2011, the unit offered seven professional programs, six international certificates and more than 60 intensive courses. It served 5,000 trainees (engineers and scientists). The Management Center The Management Center’s Programs serve senior executives and middle managers by applying the latest management concepts and best practices to today’s marketplace. In the fiscal year 2010 2011, the Management Center offered 257 programs through its three institutes. It served 6,067 trainees with total training hours of 12,849 in Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The Kamal Adham Center for Television and Digital Journalism The Center provides non-degree, professional training to the broader Egyptian and international communities, in addition to its Master of Arts program and undergraduate offerings. Media professionals may take courses in voice coaching, video editing, studio production, camera operation and television script writing. Facilities include a state-of-the-art television studio, digital newsroom and editing labs. The center also collaborates with international agencies to conduct public service and digital journalism workshops. The International Executive Education Institute (IEEI) The Institute was established in 2008 to provide world-class, executive development programs in partnership with leading business schools in Europe, North America and Asia. In 2009 – 2010, IEEI expanded its open enrollment and company-specific programs, growing its alumni to 472 senior executives from 188 leading organizations in Egypt and the region. In the same year, IEEI launched the Real Estate Academy, in partnership with the National University of Singapore. The Citadel Capital Financial Services Center offers students, Researchers and professionals an array of services that integrate hands-on financial services practice with classroom-based financial concepts such as securities trading, risk management and asset allocation. A2K4D fosters rigorous policy oriented research that conceptualizes and investigates the economic and legal challenges that face access to knowledge (A2K), and the implications that these have on human development. Based on solid theoretical foundations, A2K4D research serves to provide Arab policy makers, negotiators and international representatives with well-researched intellectual property alternatives and appropriate business models in areas as diverse as software, health, trade, education, culture and agriculture. A2K4D is a founding member of the Access to Knowledge Global Academy (A2KGA) in collaboration with the Information Society Project of Yale Law School and partners from Brazil, China, India, South Africa and the United States. Through international and regional collaboration, A2K4D is intended to fill a void in academic scholarship on the subject, raising awareness of the A2K paradigm at the policy and academic levels. At the heart of A2K4D is the belief in the integral role that access and contribution to knowledge can play in promoting sustainable human development, particularly in the digital age. The AUC Forum The AUC Forum applies respected academic standards to the analysis of policy-oriented issues. In addition, the AUC Forum highlights issues that bridge the Middle East and the wider world. To this end, the AUC Forum, alone or in collaboration with national, regional, and international institutions, holds conferences, international workshops, and panels on timely topics crucial to the region and the world in the twenty-first century. The Center for Migration and Refugee Studies The Center for Migration and Refugee Studies consists of educational, research and outreach programs. External funding for CMRS research work has developed along two main lines: developing country studies and systematic collection of information and data on migration, asylum seeking and refugees in Egypt and the Middle East region, and in depth studies on current and emerging migration and refugee issues. The intention of CMRS’ outreach activities is to raise awareness to the situation and problems of refugees in Egypt through regular seminars, workshops, conferences, summer and winter certificated short courses. The Center for Translation Studies The Center for Translation Studies is a research facility that fosters collaborative outreach programs and research in translation and translation studies within an interdisciplinary context. The center seeks to enhance interaction and cooperation between AUC, Egyptian, regional, and international institutions and organizations working in the field of translation and interpretation studies and practice. The center is committed to promoting translation as a cultural political practice that can enable innovation and generate new spaces for the development of individual societies and crosscultural conversation. The Cynthia Nelson Institute for Gender and Women’s Studies The Cynthia Nelson Institute for Gender and Women’s Studies interdisciplinary research and graduate teaching center focuses on the Middle East/North Africa, Africa and the South Asia regions. Office of Institutional Research Page 66 The Desert Development Center The Desert Development Center promotes sustainable development in the arid regions of Egypt and the Middle East region. The DDC conducts applied research on ecologically sound and economically viable land improvement, trains desert settlers and others in improved technologies and management practices, and provides adapted planting materials and analytical services to desert communities. The Economic and Business History Research Center The Economic and Business History Research Center is established to foster the use of business history in studying the economic and social history of Egypt and the Middle East. The Economic and Business History Research Center (EBHRC) undertakes projects in documentation, research, publication, teaching and training that situate Egyptian or Middle East business history within its broader social history context. El-Khazindar Business Research and Case Center El-Khazindar Business Research and Case Center was established in 2007 with a vision to become the primary link between academia and practice. The center publishes world-class cases on business in the region and to promote participant-centered learning techniques. KCC mission is to serve as a resource for faculty from the School of Business, and from the region to build capacity in the development of quality case studies in areas related to business in the Middle East and North Africa. In addition, the center promotes the use of case studies as learning tools to provide students with opportunities to integrate and apply skills and techniques learned in the classroom to real-world situations and to prepare graduates for successful careers as leaders in business in the region. John D. Gerhart Center for Philanthropy and Civic Engagement John D. Gerhart Center for Philanthropy and Civic Engagement is a university-based institution established in 2006. The Center aims to further the American University in Cairo's mission to advance social responsibility and active citizenship. The Center’s mission is to enhance the culture of giving and social responsibility in the Arab region. The Gerhart Center provides support services to philanthropic institutions. The Center also works with the private sector to promote Corporate Sustainability Management. It also promotes broader civic engagement among Arab Universities through the Ma'an University Alliance and a number of programs at AUC, including the pedagogy of Community Based Learning across the curriculum. The John D. Gerhart Field Station The John D. Gerhart Field Station, located at El Gouna on the Red Sea coast, provides opportunities for scientific research, academic teaching, non-academic training, as well as field trips for a variety of university-wide educational programs. The Station is administered by the School of Sciences and Engineering (SSE) to promote faculty and student activities in marine biology, desert ecology, genomics, environmental science and engineering, other science and technology branches such as biotechnology, architectural, construction, petroleum and energy engineering. With the ongoing enhancement of its laboratory facilities, fast internet connection, and overnight accommodation setup, the Station is ideally suited for national and international training courses as well as being a viable satellite research center for AUC. Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Alsaud Center for American Studies and Research Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Alsaud Center for American Studies and Research serves as a catalyst for independent research in American studies both within the university and with the outside community by providing intellectual and information resources to support those wishing to study the United States more fully. The Research Advisory Council The Research Advisory Council works with the Associate Provost for Research Administration to develop policies related to faculty research. The Social Research Center's The Social Research Center's mission is to conduct and encourage multidisciplinary social science research in Egypt and the Arab region, to train researchers, and to guide and assist graduate students, scholars and organizations engaged in social science research in the region. The center strives to inform policy formulation and implementation while contributing to knowledge in the social sciences. It aims to contribute to developing skills and building institutional capacity in the region as well as to advance public debate about important issues. All research is designed to assure the rights of subjects to confidentiality and informed consent. The Office of Institutional Research The Office of Institutional Research plans and implements processes and activities that facilitate the dissemination and delivery of decision support data to key decision makers. OIR also conducts institutional surveys, prepares reports and supports leadership in integrated planning, assessment and accreditation. The office is the official source of university data. Office of the Associate Provost for Research Administration In 2009 - 2010, the office administered $624,298 in university funding to local and international conferences, workshops, ongoing research projects, research development teaching enhancement and mini grants benefiting 219 faculty members. Additionally, $118,752 were awarded to 60 graduate students to support research and travel to conferences. Office of Institutional Research Page 68 Yousef Jameel Science and Technology Research Center The Yousef Jameel Science and Technology Research Centre at The American University in Cairo is an interdisciplinary center that draws on the expertise of the university’s engineering and science departments. Our mission is to establish an internationally competitive research activity at AUC resourced and supported to the highest standards. The principle investigators leading the research at YJSTRC have diverse backgrounds, including physicists, chemists, biologists, material scientists and engineers. Such diversity resulted in an interdisciplinary research environment which is the driving thrust of the center towards world-class accomplishments. To date, the research conducted at the center resulted in five different patents that have been filed with the US patent office. Such patents are expected to have a high commercial potential, which will put the center on the correct track towards a healthy industrial engagement.
