He graduated with a degree in architecture, specializing in interior design and industrial design from Politecnico di Milano, where he followed courses given by Tomas Maldonado, among others. After a brief experience in aviation (Unifly Air Services) and obligatory military service, as Italian Army officer, he studied architecture and design at the same time launching a career as a designer, first in engineering and then in the context of applied research for plastics industry and new materials with ENI Group, where he eventually served in the role of project manager. he meets Michele De Lucchi ■ As an architect and industrial designer he has spent time working in the studio of Michele De Lucchi (Milano, 1993-1995) contributing to various architecture projects such as the Olivetti Showroom for the Ivrea headquarters. He also worked on various industrial products for companies such as Ciba Vision (working on packaging for their “Focus Dailies” contact lenses), Mandarina Duck, Olivetti, and Vitra. from the Scuola Politecnica di Design of Nino Di Salvatore to the Politecnico di Milano ■ Since 2005 Mr. Salvi has served as a lecturer in the faculty of product design, at Politecnico di Milano (Scuola del Design), teaching a course on product design production processes; in 2008 he was assigned to teach a course on product design project development. In 2006, for Polidesign (a consortium of Politecnico), he created and directed the new advanced course “Design For Plastics”, the first on the topic in Italy; this course is now being offered for the 8th time; at the same school he also serves as the adjunct professor and lecturer for various other undergraduate and masters class, and, as a consultant, participates in some product design and research projects. He has taught courses at many different universities, schools, and institutes, teaching in both English and Italian. These academic experiences include the Politecnico di Milano (adjunct professor and lecturer), the Scuola Politecnica di Design, the ISIA in Faenza and Urbino, the Istituto Europeo di Design, the Accademia di Design Bolzano, the NABA, the Domus Accademy, the Scuola Italiana Design, the Istituto Marangoni. He created and led the course “Progettazione e Produzione del Mobile” [furniture design and production] for ENAIP Lombardia, from 1999 untill 2001. In 2002 he participated in lessons for the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. 2/3 Curriculum vitae for Sergio Antonio Salvi - illustrated ■ ■ ■ EUCV - January 2016 Giulio Castelli, “Plastica, Tecnologia, Design”, other publications and journalism activity ■ As a writer he has written essays on diverse topics for professional magazines (l'Arca, VIA, GB Progetti, Stileindustria, Plast Design), in addition to writing papers for events like the international congress of the Società Italiana di Ergonomia (italian ergonomics association, Florence, 2001). His early working experiences led him to write his first book “Plastica, Tecnologia, Design”, edited by Hoepli in 1997 and presented by Giulio Castelli, the founder of Kartell. This book, after being reviewed by Domus, among other international magazines, was nominated for the “2002 World Technology Awards” in the field of design. He has also partecipated in the publishing of other books and essays such as “Transportation Design Learning” (Chiddo E. et al., Centro Ricerche CETMA of Brindisi, ENEA, 2005). Since 2015 he has worked as a freelance journalist, mostly collaborating to the Italian magazine “Il Test” (of which is the curator of a section), as a critic of industrial product. the transition engineering-product design ■ After a working experience in engineering as a freelance associated designer (BFS Design & Engineering) during which he was predominately a consultant for Montedison group (Monfrini) –designing components for household appliances, automobiles, trains, boats, helicopters, housing modules etc.– he opened his own private studio in 1997; this studio concentrated on industrial product design, and related product development; he then began to work with various organizations and companies such as Abet Laminati, Turmix Elektro Apparate, Biffi Luce, Scaroni, Microsoft Italia, Brandani, Affaba & Ferrari – working on packaging projects–, Ferrero (brand “Estathé”), Granarolo, Schweppes. research in the design sector: from “AutAut” to Microsoft “Personal Viewer” ■ Looking beyond the design and educational activities he is also interested in the research on industrial products and in the existing relations between industry, society, environment, as well as in the material culture. In 1992, while working with ENI, he invented the idea “Aut-Aut”, derived from Latin “either or”, a prototype for a low environmental impact vehicle for the city. Other research included the design of “Divo”, a device for collecting, sorting, and compacting household rubbish (1996); this design won the Replastic (a consortium of Italian companies focused on plastics recycling) competition for redesigning the kitchen and recycling of rubbish. In 2002 he led the research project “Something Personal” (shown at the 2002 SMAU exhibition and introduced by an article by Bill Gates); working for Microsoft Italia at SPD, he was tasked with developing a “Personal Viewer”; “Le Cahier”, one of the proposed concepts, won the XI Targa Bonetto SMAU Industrial Design Award. 3/3 Curriculum vitae for Sergio Antonio Salvi - illustrated
