With a distance like that it should bring a wide variety of interests and ideas to help lead the members through the next year. This issue of the “Sight Glass” brings information from the UMRA Regional Conference held in Winnipeg, Canada and from the SWRA Regional Conference held in Round Rock, Texas. We have also included activities from Modesto, CA with the first quarterly meeting of the CARSES Region, as well as a report on the MARA Region. Sgt-at-Arms Diane Smith read the RSESA prayer and led us in the pledge to the Flag. All Officers and Directors were present with the exception of Rhonda Hudson, Director of Membership. President Ziegelbein announced her Committee appointments. She also announced that the 2009 RSES International Conference will be held in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota, Oct. 27- 31, 2009. Submitted by: Sandy Ralston, Historian RSESA - 25 Reflections of Our Past As the Auxiliary starts to celebrate it’s 73rd year there may be some who are unaware of its’ history and how we have evolved. The Refrigeration Services Engineers Society was formed in 1933. It took just three years for the members to realize they needed their wives to be part of the organization. In 1936 the auxiliary became a reality. The third annual conference was held in Memphis, TN at the Guyoso Hotel, November 11, 12, and 13, 1936. At that meeting, the ladies suggested an auxiliary be formed and the men passed a resolution making way for the International Ladies Auxiliary (RSESA). In 1949, it was noted that several children had lost their lives when playing in old abandoned refrigerators when they shut on them trapping them inside. A Campaign Called “Take Off The Doors” was started in Saint Louis that same year. It was a success and became our motto for years. Many RSESA Chapters set up contact people and phone numbers to call if an abandoned refrigerator with a door intact was spotted. Because of their diligence, Congress passed the Refrigeration Safety Act in 1956, which required that the doors on all refrigerators sold after October 30, 1958 would be capable of being opened with a 15 pound push from inside. Despite such efforts there were 163 deaths that were reported between the years of 1956 and 1964 all in old style refrigerators. Even though President Nixon Signed the Refrigeration Safety Act in 1972 to make it a law that doors be removed of discarded refrigerators it did not solve the problem. There were 96 children who lost their lives between the years of 1973 and 1984. As Children still continue to play hide and seek and look for that special place that no one will find, we urge you to “Take Off The Doors” and save a child’s life! Today the auxiliary has grown to include not only women but also men across the United States and Canada. We still incorporate the same motto of “Take Off The Doors” but also have been using “Make Life Worthwhile”. Each year at The International RSES Conference we present awards for both of these categories. We hope to have more information online for you to view that will have the recipients of those awards. Be sure to look up the auxiliary by going to the following address, www.rses.org, next go to about rses. When that window comes up go to governance, then auxiliary. You will find a list of the current International Officers and Board members, a list of past president as well as some of the issues of the Sight Glass. RSESA - 26 Past Recipients Happy Spring Everyone, At least it is today, and I hope it stays that way. My good news for the year so far is that I retired on April 2nd. My new e-mail address is – [email protected] this should give you an idea for what I am planning to do with most of my time. I have so many projects put away, I’m sure I will be busy for quite some time; including some projects from Canada when the International Conference was in Calgary in 2004. As Director of Officer’s Activities I would like to remind all the officers and directors to please get me your letters and any pictures you might have for Denise’s “Memory Book”. As a past president, I know how much it means to have this to look back at and enjoy all the events again. I was asked if I could find some history on the “Take off the Door” and “To Make Life Worthwhile” awards. From the records I have, the TOD was awarded to Bonnie Prah of the Cleveland Chapter in 1994 and was awarded to the Houston Chapter in 1995, 1996 and 1997. The MLW was proposed in 1994 at the conference in Houston, TX. The records I have show the award recipients as follows: YEAR MEMBER 1995 Maxine Shuck & Lyn Sherman Rose Spring 1996 1997 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 CHAPTER REGION Houston Chapter Middle Tennessee & Houston Red Bud Chapter Ceel Hudelson & Clara Newton Diane Smith & Francis Nix-Morris CARSES Mid-West Mid-West Mid-West Mid-West Mid-West Mid-West Greater Kansas City Mid-West Mid-West Looking forward to seeing all in Minneapolis/St Paul in October. Through these manuals members of our Chapter have gained much confidence in them selves, through the knowledge gained from these manuals. We all know that behind every successful man is a foundation of support, thanks also to Karen Krepcik for enduring while Skip labored through the writing of these manuals. On February 15, 2009 Jane died in the middle of her 89th year and just a few days after her 6lst Wedding Anniversary. Jane was really a member of "The Greatest Generation". She was born in the heart of Texas. With three older brothers and loving parents, she could tell wonderful stories of the great depression, the droughts of the 1930’S, and how she survived without really knowing what she were missing but always looking forward to a better time. During World War II, she worked as a LPN in hospitals in Texas. Jane met John Clark in 1947 and they were married January 31, 1948. Her world really changed. John was in the U S Navy and they moved from Texas to California to Florida and other Naval Bases in the states. The stories she told about driving alone from one Navy Base to another with five children. The Clarks were sent to a Naval Base in Olathe, Kansas in the early sixties. How different it was living on a Naval Base in a rural area in Kansas. The children were raised in Olathe and Jane was never too busy to bus several children to School, ball game practice, work and run errands for John. She took care of neighbors and lived across the street from her church and at the last minute could make a cake or cookies for some affair. She had several friends whom she took to coffee once a week Jane's love was her sewing machine. She made knotted quilts for all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also made baby quilts for her friend's grandchildren. I feel very proud that my only granddaughter has one of these. Jane loved earrings and almost always when you saw her, she had a new pair. We never shopped at conferences that Jane did not spend time at the Jewelry Counter. John and Jane's door was always open to their five children 13 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. You may had a surprise for them or needed a little lovely care, needed Grandma's cookies, or were ill and needed help, or once in a while it was a dollar to tied you over. Clark's always came to the rescue... John was director of Region 9 and Jane loved to tell the stories of standing behind the stage in Large Hotels waiting to be introduced with her feet hurting wearing RSESA - 32 shoes that were not too comfortable. I understand she did much of the work to make the International conference a real success in Kansas City in 1977. Jane always helped with the Midwest Conferences with programs, ditty bags and advice. She made wonderful cookies for the Conferences. We in the Midwest Region always knew at our business meeting that Jane would pull from her Purse a little sack with a hand knitted dishcloth for each of us. I remember she made about 60 for one of the Midwest's Conferences held in Kansas City. These were wonderful dishcloths. We will miss them… I met Jane in l982. My husband Nick Najolia and I lost our mates the same week in 1980. We had known each other through a church organization. After persuading me 26 months after the death of our mates that I had been a widow long enough and we should get married. So I said yes "and you move into my house" and he said yes" we must go to the RSES International Conference in SAN ANTONIO on our honeymoon."... Nick had belonged to RSES since 1951 and had attended International Conferences since 1964. I had been a Stay at Home Mom for 30 years. I could conduct a PTA meeting, be a Girl Scout leader, do every volunteer job in a Catholic Grade School, but knew nothing about large organizations and conferences. He said "I will introduce you to friends of mine." We were headed to John and Jane Clark's home in Olathe. Jane gave me pointers on dress and what programs and meetings I should attend. Jane and I have been good friends since. We have attended RSESA and conferences together - we have solved the problems of the world, discussed growing up in the 1920's and 1930's. We have both had a child with problems and often were able to talk about the hurt, worry, and why did this happen to us. We did not solve the problem but we felt better. The last few years have not been easy for Jane so we know she is at peace now. Two Tired eyes are sleeping Two willing hands are still The one who worked so hard for us Is resting in God's hands.
