Arch. Beth Ellen Campbell
Beth Ellen Campbell joined One Works in 2014 as Strategy and Outreach Director bringing to the
office comprehensive design, management and research skills. Born and raised in the United States,
but living in Milan for the greater part of her life, she received a BFA in Environmental Design from
Parsons School of Design, NYC and a MA in Architecture from Politecnico di Milano. She is a
registered member of the Italian Institute of Architects of Milan e Lodi since 1994 and listed in the
Album of Adjunct Professors for the Università Politecnico di Milano since 2000.
Campbell is an executive level architect whose working experiences lie within three principal areas:
Architecture Design: as practicing architect, her clientele comes from both the public and private
sector. Campbell follows projects through all design, management and constructions phases, her
works include more than 40 residential and commercial renovations as the flagship spaces for
Patagonia, and Musto clothing companies and the conservative restoration of a historical rural
complex in a natural wildlife preserve. In collaboration with local architectural firms, commissions of
diversified nature also make up her portfolio: the realization of a new silk manufacturing compound
with annexed offices, 11 public buildings including the Milan MM Line 3 Station, 9 urban design-sport
facilities and recently a 50 unit residential complex with retail spaces on ground floor.
Large, high quality, mixed-use design projects: Campbell was local project manager from 20062009 under Adamson Associates, Toronto and Jacobs, Milan for the Hines, Porta Nuova Milano,
Garibaldi Repubblica and Varesina Projects. Beginning with the feasibility study, she led the multi
international design team through the maze of Italian building codes and by laws coordinating and
controlling the project up through the final phases of the executive drawings for tender. Full
responsibility was assumed for building permit procedures working side by side with numerous public
officials and administrative offices, completing protocol for 3 Preliminary Approvals and 19 Building
Permits in a three-year span. http://www.porta-nuova.com/
Urban Renewal and Public Space Design: Campbell is adjunct Professor at Politecnico di MilanoBovisa, Urban Planning Department, since 22 years. Her teachings concentrate on analyticalinterpretative exercises evaluating a specific urban area’s performance and territorial sustainability
capacity. Students are lead through the urban design process formulating proposals for large urban
wastelands such as Scalo Farini Rail Yard, Caserma Montello military precinct, and the Parco Trotter
district in Milan, the ex-Falck area in Sesto San Giovanni, and the ex Cemsa-Isotta Fraschini area in
Saronno, many of which have been award candidates and selected for various publications. She has
a track record for high quality teaching methods and was evaluated Top Professor out of 53 design
studio courses for the academic years 2013 and 2014.
Campbell has participated in numerous conferences and international design competitions such as
“Ansaldo City of Culture” and “Palazzo Arengario: 20th Century Art Museum” in Milan. Recently she
has been awarded for two competition projects: “Project for an urban metamorphosis: a pedestrian
highline for Genova”, E_LEVATA, 2nd place and “Sottomarina Chioggia Waterfront Redevelopment
Competition", In Medias Res, LADUNA, 1st place. (both with Masstudio). Numerous publications of
diverse nature cover her career. In the past 2 years she has published through Politecnico Milano the
book “City Transformation: Caserma Montello Milano” and has curated the new web site and
monograph volume for One Works. http://www.one-works.com/ http://www.masstudio.net/public/ita/massprojects.asp

research - competitions
2013
National competition entitled “Project for an urban metamorphosis: Genova Pedestrian
Highline”, 2nd place. The research explores the possibility of a new urban organism
generated by means of the existing causeway’s metamorphosis, which transforms the
city’s landscape enriching its identity as Madam Superba. The work seen as a whole, an
area encompassing the fairgrounds’ eastern end and extending up to the motorway’s
extreme western side, changes according to specific actions. Mutation processes begin
that lead to the identification of an urban sculpture, characterizing the city, with its own and
proper uniformity, conferred by the particular linear morphology and mixture of hard and
soft material. (with MASStudio, A. Memoli, G. Lasio, E. Raimondi, Milan, P. Matyska,
Prague).
2013
National competition entitled “The redevelopment of the Lake Varese Trail”. Lake Varese's
pedestrian and bicycle path is a principle reference system whose influence goes far
beyond the province itself, extending out on a much vaster territorial scale. At the same
time, however, there is a genuine inability to formulate a common, coordinated and strong
essence of this trail system among systems. The aim of the project is to understand the
main systems that influence the place image and their principle identifying elements, and
provide growth potentials in a unified vision for the entire pathway system (MASStudio,
with Sabrina Gallini, Bruno Baroffio).
2013
National competition entitled Project for the redevelopment of the former Mazzoleni
industrial area to host residential, public and commercial buildings, squares and gardens,
Seriate, Bergamo. The reclamation of industrial architecture and, in general, the history
that has characterized this area has strong implications on a regional scale at the moment
when the site finds a new identity, moving from "refused landscapes" to " regenerated
landscapes." Assessments made concern how the maintenance of the existing, in its
current state, can represent an economic resource for the future, computing the costbenefit balance of its demolition and reconstruction, the soil remediation costs, material
disposal, and the resulting side effects related to the area’s position in an already
urbanized context. The central idea foresees an urban re-generation process, based on
development in three stages to permit a "reactivation" in the short and long term. The first

phase permits accessibility to public spaces for use by local citizens and Expo 2015
activities. Future development stages allow the concept design’s consolidation or, if
necessary, reviewing based on market development (MASStudio with Pierre Studio,
Milan).
2013
National competition under 40 entitled “Sottomarina Chioggia Waterfront Redevelopment
Competition", “In medias res” (in the middle of things), 1st place, 2nd Rassegna di
Architettura, Chioggia renovatio-la forma della rigenerazione). The project LADUNA
identified a built space between land and water, between Chioggia and the Adriatic Sea.
This new urban development appears to the eyes of the visitor in search of its own
polarity, able to give character to Sottomarina’s waterfront and attract visitors from
neighboring towns. (Consultant to MASStudio with Alessandra Memoli, Giulia Pastore,
Elena Squellerio, Milano).
2012-2013
National competition entitled, “Urban Regeneration: Saronno Recovery Plan
Implementation”, organized by Saronno City Council. The project is situated in a vital part
of Saronno’s urban context, being one of the main City gates in close proximity to
important historical buildings, such as the Beata Vergine dei Miracoli Sanctuary, the
Archbishop complex and 'Casa Morandi', now a public library and theatre facility with
gardens. The research regarded urban renewal, through the design of a residential
building with street level commercial activity, underground parking and public spaces.
(MASStudio with Claudio Canesso, Michele Caruso, and L. Montedoro);
2012-2014
Feasibility study for the conversion of an abandoned rural farm complex near
Abbiategrasso in Public Park and Service Center for Domestic Animals (MASStudio).
2010
The analysis for the restoration, transformation and development of Tennis Club Milano
Alberto Bonacossa, via Arimondi, Milano outlines a much needed business strategy, in
order to gather with responsibility and care the precious heritage preserved within the
Club’s walls. The analysis makes use of cognitive methods practiced in the field of
strategic urban planning and enterprise: the method of observation, the Delphi method and
the SWOT analysis. The work has two objectives: the first is of a cognitive nature, it aims
to offer a complete and comprehensive survey of the life of TCM, regarding its material,
managerial, social and sport life aspects. Secondly, of a strategic nature and a direct result
of the analysis of interpretation, it provides a reference scenario for the Club’s future
development: the identification and hierarchical classification of critical issues that emerge
from the study also imply the identification of its potentials (with L. Montedoro and N.
Riva).
2003
Competition candidate, sponsored by the European Social Funds, participated in the
ideation and editing of a research program “Urban Sustainability through Environmental
Design Network UStED” with specific goals contained in the Lombardy Operative
Program. UStED works with, connects, elaborates, and diffuses instruments of urban
design for the sustainable city in the near future, with specific attention given to the streets,
public space and city squares. The program included the following operators: Politecnico
di Milano, Comune di Cologno Monzese, Bresso, Cinisello Balsamo, Sesto San Giovanni,
CONF, CEREF, LEGACOOP, and IRECOOP (with Sergio Porter
2001
International competition entitled “13 Acres: landscape design for a city park and school
grounds”, British Columbia Canada. The design tasks concerns the ri-examination of two
well-known landscapes: the city park and the elementary and middle school grounds. A
total integration of the two was the goal in order to promote the study of the natural
sciences, exploration, and play; frequented by children, teachers, and the community in
general. Formal qualities were explored that combine in an unicum poetry, educative
purposes, landscape architecture and sustainable design (with P. Favole and F. Vallone)
2001
National competition entitled “Urbanity and Urban Spaces”. The study responds to the
redevelopment of urban areas of five municipalities of the province of Padua and the need
