What is a “L/ESS”
Program
• L/ESS = Loads/Environment Spectra Survey
• Purpose:
– To establish through the acquisition, processing, reduction, and
analysis of recorded stress and loads-related data during actual
aircraft operations, the baseline loading experience
– To validate analytical tools used to establish life of aircraft
components
*** Allows User to Better Understand and Track the Usage of Their
Aircraft and to Establish Adequate Maintenance/Repair Procedures ***
L/ESS History
• Legacy: Past USAF C-130 Loads Recording Efforts
– LHRP - Life History Recording Program (70’s)
VGH program used to define aircraft loading environments.
– SMLRP - Severe Missions Loads Recording Program
Early 80’s program to investigate severity levels of new mission
types.
– L/ESS 1 - Loads/Environment Spectra Survey
Instrumentation and Processing System designed in late 80’s, but
only installed on a prototype aircraft for a limited verification
period. Design and Development Limited by Recording System
Memory Limitations.
L/ESS – Why Now
• MIL-HDBK-1530C provides guidance that each MDS (or Usage type)
have sufficient number of aircraft instrumented such that 20% of the
data is collected
• Currently no in-service Legacy C-130 is instrumented for L/ESS
• C-130Js record Nz data which can be used to determine environment
but have no strain gages to determine actual local loads/stresses
Current L/ESS Program
• Warner Robins 330th ACSG Contracted LM Aero to Develop a Technical
Data Package (TDP) for an AC-130U Aircraft – October 2007
• Warner Robins 330th ACSG Contracted LM Aero to Develop a Technical
Data Package (TDP) for a standard C-130 Aircraft – October 2009
– TDP to be based upon effort for AC-130U
• First Part of Program (Task I) in process, to be completed Jan 2011
• Task I to develop TDP and purchase Data Acquisition Unit
• Task II to Install TDP (stain gages and LRUs)
– Task III to calibrate aircraft and collect data (yet to be quoted)
