T56 Series 3.5 Program Origin
• Secretary of the U.S. Air Force tasked National Research
Council (NRC) in 2006 to assess options for improving fuel
efficiency of large, non-fighter aircraft
• NRC’s 2007 recommendation for C-130H fleet
– Design and incorporate T56-A-15 engine enhancements, or
– Re-engine the C-130H fleet with contemporary engine
• Rolls-Royce initiated T56 Series 3.5 engineering development
program in Sep 2007

Series 3.5 versus Series 3 certification requirements analysis for
USAF C-130 fleet (May 2010)
• Contract with Rolls-Royce for C-130 T56 3.5 flight test program
and 3.5 hardware (Q4 2010)
• Low-rate 3.5 production begins (Q4-2010)
• USAF 3.5 Flight Test (Q2 2011)
• USAF budget process begins for FY13 kit acquisition- (Q3- 2011)
Summary
•
T56 Series 3.5 Test Cell Fuel Savings Data
• Successful First Engine-to-Test- met/exceeded expectations –
demonstrated estimated SFC improvement of 7.9%
• 9.0% SFC improvement has been demonstrated on two production
standard engines
• Final 3.5 performance data available following 150 hr. AMT
•
T56 3.5 development program moving forward on schedule
• Engine development test program to be completed Nov 2010
• Low-rate 3.5 kit production to begin Q4-2010
•
Early indications show there will be high demand for 3.5 kits
– USAF now pursuing funding for flight test program
– RRC in discussions now with other USG and International C-130 and
P-3 operators for early launch commitments
