Removing hunger as a barrier to learning Volunteer to deliver food to schools. Help us get food into the hands of students! Invite us to speak at your next group meeting or event. With the community’s support, we can spread the love further! “There are so many kids that come here, and the only meals they get are the meals at school, but now they have the Love Pantry.” - Angela Crapps, Lake Como Elementary School Dear Love Pantry, Thank you for the food and I hope you have a good day. If you haven’t gave us the food we wouldn’t eat. But I really, really thank you for it. I love what you did for my family. My mom said it was a blessing. I thank you very much. Each project school is provided with a cabinet stocked with emergency food and basic hygiene items, and restocked weekly by volunteers throughout the semester. When a teacher identifies a student in need, the family can be provided with food and valuable community resource information. The project is simple and the process to help the student is kept completely confidential. The Love Pantry places emergency food in the schools - and into the hands of students. Many of the students we serve receive their only nutritious meal(s) of the day at the school cafeteria. Often their families are facing extremely limited financial resources, and may be homeless, living in a shelter, in a hotel, or in the family car. By the numbers: “The Love Pantry has been a wonderful resource for our families... how can I talk to a parent about helping their child with homework when the family has no food?” - Dr. Jennifer Porter-Smith Principal of Nap Ford Community School • 23 of the most common food items • 8 of the most common hygiene items • 176,256 students enrolled in Orange County Schools • 58% of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch • 4,844 homeless students currently in Orange County Schools • 1,100 meals in each cabinet (estimated meals per semester) • $0 cost to schools or families Facts About Child Nutrition Missing meals and experiencing hunger impairs children’s development and achievement. Studies published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Pediatrics, and the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry document the negative effects of hunger on children’s academic performance and behavior in school. Hungry children have lower math scores. They are more likely to repeat a grade, come to school late, or miss it entirely.
