M & D FORUM The Statistical Analysis of the Result of the National Students Physical Health Standard in 2012 in Jianghan University CAI Qifei The PE Department of Jianghan University, 430056 Abstract: Having analyzed the statistic of our students taking part in the test of National Students Physical Health Standard in 2012, we found that 48.43% of the students reached the standard of figure; and in special physical qualities, such as endurance, strength and explosive power, more than 99.39% of them have passed the standard. In terms of the general standard of our nation, the physical quality of students in our school has been improved, which has a certain relation with the teaching arrangement that some tests of National Students Physical Health have been blended into the PE curricula, and also has a certain relation with the close combination of the evaluation of students and the graduation with National Students Physical Health. Keywords: Jianghan University, Undergraduate, The National Students Physical Health Standard, Statistic 1 Object and the Methods of Study 1.1 Object of study: 14870 students who have participated in the test of National Students Physical Health in 2012 and have got their records. 1.2 Methods of study: Mathematical statistics, which means that having got the numerical value of the effective results of the participants, we have analyzed them by statistical methods. 1.3 Survey methods: By the discussion between teachers and students, the regular PE teaching and the like, I have had a rational analysis of the numerical value that we have got and have put forwards with suggestions to make the work better in the future. 2 Result and Analysis 2.1 In the aspect of body figure, it is still “big in the both ends and small in the middle” In terms of the years that the undergraduates were born in our school now, they were almost born in 1990s. Although they have shown the characteristics of Chinese examination-oriented education, which indicates that they have better ability in thinking, in analysis to the objectives and in accepting the information than the people who were born in 1980s, the general trend of their figures has followed the trend of people born in 1980s, which refers to the current situation that the undergraduates who are underweight (“Sprouts” Type) and those who are overweight (“Obesity” Type) takes up more persentage than those who are standard- weight. This is the Table 1 The general rank in standard weight among the students of Jianghan University by grades and gender Grade The Overunderweight Standard OverObesity Number of weight weight (%) weight (%) (%) Samples (%) (%) Freshman Male 1855 5.5 31.64 40.97 5.98 15.9 female 2138 3.65 41.07 48.36 3.98 2.95 501 M & D FORUM sophomore Junior Senior Total Total 3993 4.51 36.69 44.93 4.91 8.97 Male 1745 5.5 31.17 43.95 7.11 12.26 Female 2031 2.17 39.04 54.85 2.41 1.53 Total 3776 3.71 35.41 49.81 4.58 6.49 Male 1681 5.35 26.59 46.46 7.56 14.04 Female 1996 4.81 40.93 50.35 2.51 1.4 Total 3677 5.06 34.38 48.57 4.81 7.18 Male 1572 4.64 24.43 47.14 9.29 14.5 Female 1852 3.4 39.63 53.94 1.84 1.19 Total 3424 3.97 32.65 50.82 5.26 7.3 14870 4.32 34.86 48.43 4.88 7.51 Seeing from the Table 1, we can find that the obesity rate of male in all the grades is between 12%-16% while the obesity rate keeps under 3%, which indicates that it is common that the male undergraduates have had the high-fat, high-protein and some other high-energy food more often. But there is not much difference of the obesity rate from grade one to grade two, which also means that those fatty boys have hardly changed their figures by taking exercise. By discussion, we have found that they have not been fatty since entering the university campus, but they love the high-energy food, such as KFC, McDonald, and Coca Cola, and they have been fattier than the peers in their senior high school. Compared to the obesity, the number and the percentage of those who are underweight has been falling down, which has a certain relation with the scientific die structure, and furthermore, it is also related to the strict control of the food price in our canteen. 2.2 The average grades of the test fit the average evaluation of the students Since the Minister of Education as well as the State Physical Culture Administration declared a joint document – the National Students Physical Health Standard (short for “the Standard” in the later part) in 2007, it has been forced to implement by the government despite the impugnment from society. For the students, it takes a longer period and more society factors to see the actual influence of taking exercises to them. So far, students participate in those tests that the Standard required in order to win the evaluation of students, the National Scholarship or the President Scholarship and some other scholarships. According to the sixth principle of the Implementing Measures of the National Students Physical Health Standard, undergraduates who intend to win the evaluation of students must get “Good” class in the tests, which means whose score should be above 75. Jianghan University has strictly executed this principle to the various kinds of evaluation of school level and nation level since 2008. Therefore, the results of the tests from the undergraduates in Jianghan University are presented as following: (in Table 2: About the general situation of the number of samples and average by different grades and genders.) 502 M & D FORUM Table 2 About the general situation of the number of samples and average by different grades and genders Grades Male Female Total Average Freshman The Number of Samples 1855 Average 72.2 The Number of Samples 2138 Average 70.43 The Number of Samples 3993 Sophomore 1745 73.1 2031 73.35 3776 73.24 Junior 1681 73.06 1996 73.13 3677 73.1 Senior 1572 71.52 1852 71.95 3424 71.75 Total 6853 72.48 8017 72.19 14870 72.33 71.25 As we can see, the average of all the tests is 72.33, which seems a little bit low. But considering the requirements of school-level evaluation of students, and the principles in the Standard that being above 60 is accessible to win the evaluation of students, which means if a student intends to get the third-class scholarship, his (or her) score of the tests in the Standard is at least 60, the average of 72.33 is reasonable. Seeing from Table 3, we can understand how well that the principle fits the measures of evaluation of students. Table 3 About the overall situation of the number of samples and the percentage that different classes of comprehensive evaluation take up by different grades and gender Grade The Number Excellent Good Passing Failing of Samples (%) (%) (%) (%) Freshman Sophomor e Junior Senior Total Male 1855 0.97 38.44 56.5 4.1 Female 2138 0.42 26.85 70.07 2.67 Total 3993 0.68 32.23 63.76 3.33 Male 1745 1.83 41.6 51.12 5.44 Female 2031 1.62 42 54.8 1.58 Total 3776 1.72 41.82 53.1 3.36 Male 1681 1.61 43.78 47.53 7.08 Female 1996 1.35 39.38 57.26 2 Total 3677 1.47 41.39 52.81 4.32 Male 1572 1.21 34.48 54.58 9.73 Female 1852 0.59 31.32 65.77 2.32 Total 3424 0.88 32.77 60.63 5.72 14870 1.18 37.05 57.63 4.14 The excellent students who have won the annual evaluation of student, the school-level scholarship and nation-level scholarship take up 34.7% of all the undergraduates. And, we can find that the rate of “Good” class is just 37.05%, which fits the rate of excellent students. Relatively, the rate that the freshmen and the seniors intend to win the evaluation of students is lower than the other two grades, hence the competition of the scholarship among the sophomores and the juniors is intense, and the rate of “Good” class is above 40%. It is inextricably linked to the guide of school reward. Once we talked with the undergraduates, they said directly that they would take exercises for two months and even longer to prepare the tests and they would mainly aim at the events required by the Standard with the purpose to get the National Scholarship and the President Scholarship. 503 M & D FORUM 2.3 The quality of endurance and strength tends to be same and there is much to improve By analyzing the statistic in Table 4, we think that the overall trends of undergraduates participating in the tests of long-distance running, standing jump and full sphere in our school goes to be same, which means that it maintains at the intermediate level. Table 4 The comprehensive statistic table about the number of samples, average, standard deviation of Jianghan University students distinguished by grades, gender, urban and rural Events Long-distance Running Standing Long Jump The Number of Samples Average Standard Deviation The Number of Samples Full Sphere Average Standard Deviation The Number of Samples Average Standard Deviation Urban Urban Urban Urban Urban Urban Urban Urban Urban Fresh man Male 1855 237.43 17.84 1855 2.33 0.15 1855 9.16 1.36 Female 2138 234.99 15.42 2138 1.75 0.14 2138 6.42 0.71 Sopho more Male 1745 238.86 19.95 1745 2.32 0.16 1745 9.39 1.34 Female 2031 234.4 16.57 2031 1.75 0.14 2031 6.64 0.59 Junior Male 1681 242.46 20.7 1681 2.39 0.16 1681 9.17 1.27 Female 1996 237.03 17.1 1996 1.79 0.14 1996 6.66 0.58 Male 1572 248.23 21.28 1572 2.35 0.16 1572 9.16 1.25 Female 1852 242.45 15.75 1852 1.76 0.14 1852 6.63 0.51 Total (Female) 8017 237.07 16.51 14870 2.03 0.33 14870 7.8 1.65 Total (Male) 6853 241.51 20.33 Senior The most difficult event for the students goes to the long-distance running, according to the result that the majority of them only have got the edge of “Pass” or the “Good” class and the integral level is not so satisfying on this event, which keeps up with the integral level of the nation. Secondly, the full sphere seems very difficult for them too, especially for the girls, with the poor result. It is because that they have not attached much importance on the training of upper limbs’ strength since they were in primary school and junior school and it is a little bit late to catch up with the standard only by the efforts in university. Although the strength and the process of training have been emphasized in the P.E. curriculum for the girls, it is not so effective on the ground that the cumulation of strength cannot take into effect in a short period. 3 Conclusion and Suggestion 3.1 On the basis of current analysis of the statistics, we cannot infer whether our reform of P.E. curriculum (combining some of the tests required by the Standard with the regular P.E. courses), but we insist that if we go on, it works in the next year and shows the partial improvement in the specific data. 3.2 We should strengthen the idea in students’ minds that taking exercises is beneficial for their health to push them to participate in various kinds of sports. Only by the “in class and after class” integration teaching mode can we ensure formally that the undergraduates are “exercising” on the fields instead of staying at the internet bar. 3.3 We should further the reform of P.E. curriculum to guide the students to take exercises consciously without the purpose of passing the tests of the Standard. 504 M & D FORUM About the Author: Cai Qifei, male, born in Xishui, Hubei Province; June, 1972; Associate Professor; major in College Physical Education and Health.
