They work, in most cases, according to the recirculating air principle, sucking the air to be cooled from the inside itself. The objective of the automobile air conditioning trainer designed by EDIBON is to introduce the student into the complex world of the air conditioning systems, as well as studying and determining the optimum parameters for the operation of the unit concerning the basic functions of an automobile. GENERAL DESCRIPTION All the elements of the TAAU unit are typical elements used in the automotive industry. The air conditioning unit is basically composed of a motor that drives a compressor via a belt, simulating the automobile engine. The speed of the motor and, therefore, the speed of the compressor, is regulated through a frequency converter to simulate the drive via the engine of the vehicle. The air supplied by the fans enters the cooling system through the condenser to undergo a cooling cycle along that system. The unit has been designed to study not only the air conditions change but also cooling circuit, by strategically placing temperature and pressure sensors and flow meters, which enable us to study the cooling cycle. SPECIFICATIONS Bench-top unit. Anodized aluminum structure and panels in painted steel. Main metallic elements in stainless steel. Diagram in the front panel with similar distribution to the elements in the real unit. A condenser (radiator). An evaporator. Two cooling fans. A filter. Electrical motor (to simulate the vehicle combustion engine). Frequency converter to adjust the number of revolutions of the motor between 300-1500 r.p.m. Motor speed measurement. A variable area compressor. An expansion valve. A storage tank. A compartment made of PMMA, with ventilation windows. A safety pressure switch that switches off the compressor at 14 bars. Six “J” type temperature sensors. A low pressure manometer for the coolant to measure the pressure before the compressor. A high pressure manometer for the coolant to measure the pressure after the compressor and before the condenser. A high pressure manometer for the coolant to measure the pressure after the condenser. Flow meter for the coolant, range: 5-60 l./h. This unit uses R134a coolant (CFC free). Electrical console, with: Metallic box. Temperature sensors connections. Digital display for temperature sensors. Digital display for internal temperature. Selector for temperature sensors. Compressor switch. Switches and regulators for the fans flow (0-100%). Switch and regulator for the electric motor speed (0-100%). Digital display for the electric motor speed. Cables and accessories, for normal operation. Manuals: This unit is supplied with the following manuals: Required Services, Assembly and Installation, Starting-up, Safety, Maintenance & Practices Manuals. Page 2 www.edibon.com EXERCISES AND PRACTICAL POSSIBILITIES 1.- Study of the typical elements of a cooling system. 6.- Determination of the system efficiency. 2.- Simulation of the automobile engine speed variation. 7.- Experimental determination of the air specific heat capacity. 3.- Cooling depending on the condenser’s fan. 8.- Determination of the parameters that take part in an air conditioning process. 4.- Cooling depending on the inlet fan to the interior of the vehicle. Additional practical possibilities: 5.- Energy balance in the evaporator and condenser. REQUIRED SERVICES DIMENSIONS & WEIGHTS -Electrical supply: three-phase, 400V. / 50Hz. or 230V. / 60 Hz.
