HIGHLAND HIGHLIGHTS Highly Gifted Application Process for Parents of Grade 3 Students Applications for the Elementary Centers for the Highly Gifted (HGC) were recently mailed directly to all parents of Grade 3 students in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). This is a reminder that if you are interested in having your child considered for the HGC, you must complete the application and return it by Friday, November 6, 2015 to: HGC Application, Divis ion of Consortia Choice and Application Program Services 11721 Kemp Mill Road, Silver Spring, Maryland 20902 If for some reason you did not receive an application in the mail, and are interested in the program, contact the school or you may access it from the websit e at www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/special programs/. The packet also is available in Chinese, French, Korean, Spanish, and Vietnamese. If you need a translated application, please contact the school. Parents invited to visit child’s classroom! 10/13/15– PICTURE DAY! 10/15/15—Pre-K/Head Start field trip to Clark’s farm 10/16/15—No school for EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS Each year schools are required to update the emergency/cris is plan and practice fire evacuation drills and Lockdown and Shelter-in-Place drills. In the event of an evacuation on-site, students will be directed to the back playground. In the event we need to evacuate off-site, we will report to St. Catherine’s School. Our alternate site is Einstein H.S. Our parent/reunification (PCR) is a systematic process we use during an emergency to assis t us in reuniting students with their parents. During this process, parents will need to report to the All Purpose Room and bring identification. If you have any questions about our emergency plan, please contact the school. students! 10/19-10/23—BOOK FAIR 10/27/15 & 10/28/15—Hearing and Vision Screening 10/30/15—Grade 5 Field Trip to Strathmore (AM Only) Comcast Internet Essentials Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is continuing to partner wit h Comcast to make the Internet Essentials program available to MCPS families. Internet Essentials is a national program that provides families wit h low-cost access to the internet, affordable computers, and free digit al literacy training. In schools wit h free and reduced-pric e meals system rates above 50 percent (all families are eligible to participate, regardless of their FARMS status. There are 68 schools that meet the crit eria, including Highland E.S. All families in our school will receive a letter (back-to-back Englis h and Spanis h) and flyer by mail soon from Comcast and MCPS wit h information about the Comcast Internet Essentials program. 10/30/15—Fall Festival 2:30-3:15 p.m. 10/13/15—1st marking period ends 11/2/15—No School for Students 11/3/15—PTA Meeting@ 9:00 a.m. EMERGENCY CARE FOR STUDENTS EXPERIENCING ANAPHYLAXIS The healt h and well-being is of the upmost im portance to MCPS. The Board of Education adopted policy JPD, Emergency Care for Students Experiencing Anaphylaxis to safeguard your children in the event of an emergency. Parents are responsible for notifying schools of a child’s special healt h care needs or diagnosis and providing appropriate medic ations. These medications may be kept in the school’s health room for your child’s use in case of an emergency. To do this, you will need to complete MCPS Form, 525-14, Emergency Care for the Management of a Student with a Diagnosis of Anaphylaxis, and deliver the properly labeled auto-injector to school. Highland E.S. has designated staff members that are trained to administer EpiPens. Please be assured that any tim e an EpiPen auto-injector is used, 911 and you will be called.
