Page 1 Cresthaven Star Chronicle Sherri Gorden, Principal Emily Madan, Assistant Principal Believe...Achieve...Succeed http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/cresthavenes/newsletter/ April 2, 2015 Extended School Year Maryland State Superintendent of Schools Lillian Lowery has approved a plan that will allow MCPS to go two days below the 180 days of instruction required by state law. Under the plan approved on Monday, March 30, MCPS will extend the school year by one day to make up some of the instructional time lost due to inclement weather. The last day of school this year will now be Monday, June 15, which will be an early release day. For more information, visit School Contingency Calendar at http://montgomeryschoolsmd.org/info/calendars/ Redskin Read Challenge: Congr atulations to our students for their par ticipation in the reading challenge sponsored by Redskins organization. During the months of February and March students were challenged to read at least 1,000 minutes. The students recorded their minutes in a reading log and had a parent or teacher nominate them. There were 50 participating schools from Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. Cresthaven was number 5 among the top 10 participating schools. Congratulations also to our partner school Roscoe Nix who placed number 1. We are looking forward to the challenge next year. Reading Night: “Camp Read-A-Lot! Join us for a fun night of reading and writing activities for the whole family. Thursday, April 16, 2015, 6:00-7:30pm. Scholastic Book Fair: Get r eady to stock up for the summer on your favor ite books. The book fair will be up and ready when we return from spring break. Students will visit with the classes to browse and purchase. They will also have opportunities before school to make purchases as well. We know that parents also enjoy looking through the selections for their favorite authors so make plans to visit during the week of April 13-17. I hope that you enjoy a restful and joyous spring break. Our students and staff have been working very hard during the 3rd quarter and deserve the time off to refresh and prepare for the final marking period. When we return there will be many activities to keep us busy. We start with the scholastic book fair and reading night, come out and join us. Spring clubs will also begin. We will also have our annual Career Day event and talent show. Students are excited about all of the upcoming end of year events and activities. Don’t miss out please check your child’s book bag for information on all of the events.
